king teresa

Ladies and Gentlemen, I ashamedly present to you what I did instead of the art I’m actually being paid to do (*europeanly shoves this at @forovnix*)

Greeting my dear friends, today we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. We still have a long way to go, but I know that we have grown in the decades since his life, mission, and untimely death.  MLK is definitely a hero of mine. This may surprise some of you, but one of his heroes was Mahatma Gandhi (He even had a picture of him in the kitchen).  They both espoused Non Violent Social Protest.  While they would not accept the injustice they faced, they refused to stoop to either violence or hatred.  Although both of their lives were tragically cut short by assassin’s bullets, the movements they led were largely successful.  India won its freedom from Great Britain, and the Civil Rights Movement undeniably changed America for the better.  While I can never claim to understand what it’s like to be part of an oppressed minority any more than I can comprehend the experience of motherhood, I know in my heart that we all benefited from these changes.  Any time that even the smallest amounts of hatred, fear, or prejudice are transformed into love, everyone benefits.  I believe that Dr King expressed this truth very powerfully in the following speech:

“Though we will not accept your racist policies, we will not hate you.  We will match your power for hatred with our “soul” power.  We will win our freedom, and in doing so we will free you as well.”

Hmm, maybe “Love your neighbor as yourself” really is the best way to live. What do you think?  Martin Luther King truly was a multi-faceted hero.  Against the wishes of many of his followers, he opposed unfair housing practices (primarily in the North), and the Vietnam Conflict.  In fact, he and Thich Nhat Hanh were friends.  Thich Nhat Hanh even credits a woman in Dr King’s Entourage with teaching him how to hug.  These people and others like Mother Teresa are My Heroes.  They live in a much larger world than most of us can comprehend.  They know a world where you can love beyond the concepts of religion, nationality, and race.  A world in which there isn’t anything or anyone to hate.  Imagine that!

“Imagine all the people sharing all the world.  You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.  I hope some day you will join us, and the world will live as one.” - John Lennon

You are much loved,
