Beltane Masterpost

Time for another masterpost. Beltane is upon us, which means Summer is almost here! Beltane falls opposite Samhain on the Wheel of the Year, and while Samhain is about celebrating and respecting death, Beltane is all about celebrating life!! Like Samhain, it’s believed that the veil between the worlds is at its’ thinnest at this time. During this time it’s customary to burn ceremonial fires, do magic relating to or leave offerings for faeries. If you’re not sure what to get up to on Beltane, here’s some ideas:

The Faeries are divided into two courts - the Seelie (blessed) and Unseelie (damned). They are like Yin and Yang, neither being able to thrive without the other, yet still opposites. Typically, the Seelie rule from Beltane to Samhain, and the Unseelie rule from Samhain to Beltane. The Seelie are believed to be amicable, whereas the Unseelie are depicted as more hostile, almost malevolent. The Faeries themselves come from the Tuatha de Danann of Celtic legend - the people of the goddess Danu - and the Seelie Queen is often shown in likeness to Danu with her flowing red hair.

Hi Cassie, I have two questions. The first one is: can you tell us what kind of danger they are going to face? You can give us a clue (if you want obviously) but since the threat from LM is out, what's coming? And the second is: are you coming to Argentina in the near future? because you are my hero literally and I NEED to meet you so bad

TDA Team Good? They face the wrath of faerie kings and ancient immortal warriors, the schemes of the Seelie Queen, the restless dead and the bigots of the Clave; just a Tuesday in the life of Shadowhunters, really.

As for Argentina, I’ve been invited and I’d love to go, just trying to scrape out some time!

Hamilton Creatures AU Fic!

Summary: Alex is sent into the forest to deliver letters for Martha Washington. However, the forest is infested with all sorts of mythical beasts, and is controlled by a tyrannical faerie king, King George III. Along the course of his journey, Alex meets werewolves, satyrs, faeries, hunters, and many other creatures who fight for his attention (and his food).

The creator of the creatures au and all credit for the plot, portrayal of the characters, etc. belong to @bunny-yams. I only take credit for writing about their amazing idea.

I will try to update this weekly whenever possible!

The Folio of Friendly and Furious Fey: Part One

Creatures from the Feywild, a parallel plane to the prime
In this vibrant world these fey have a habit for speaking in rhyme

There are countless creatures who lie beyond the veil of trees
The sprites, sylphs, nymphs, or dryads being only a few of these

Their deities, associated with either the Seelie or Unseelie courts
Wielding the power of nature these creatures offer cunning retorts

While some fey are kind, often showing benevolence
There are often dark, murderous things that don’t see the relevance

Devouring travelers, kidnapping children, bringing misfortune for all
Redcaps, Quicklings and Gremlins will gut you for just being too tall…

He’s only been walking for about a minute before something in the air changes. Frowning, Castiel Novak looks up from where he’s been watching his step to take a look at the copse of trees around him, shivering slightly against the wind. The rain has finally cleared to give way for sunset–gold light spilling across hill and rock. It’s beautiful in an ancient, abandoned sort of way… but something in the air has him alert and careful.

This glen demands respect.

He pays special attention to his steps from then on, careful not to put his feet anywhere outside the marked paths.

The more Castiel walks, the faster his heart beats and his body curls into itself, and suddenly, the nice Scottish man who picked him up on the side of the road and drove him to the fairie glen doesn’t seem so crazy.

“They’re there,” he’d said sagely, nodding up the road. “Ye canna see ‘em, but they are. And if they choose you, lad, well… ye best do whatever they want, because fairies are a fickle sort.“

Dunvegan, the faerie castle, is a big and imposing outcropping of rocks, and after seeing the old and new spirals on its other side, Cas carefully makes his way to the top. There are a couple of people making their way back down, and he nods to them as they pass.

But to get to the top, he has to climb up a narrow passageway. He goes from thinking he can fit with his backpack, to being completely stuck.

Gradence Fic Rec Time

Greetings friends! As I am sure many of you have noticed, I am currently in Gradence hell, and honestly having a pretty fun time of it. Considering the fact that I have consumed way more fic than I probably want to admit to, I figure it’s about time I put together a fic rec list of some of my favorite fics in the fandom.

Pretty much all of these are long fics or series, largely because that’s been what I’ve been super interested in reading lately. Some of these are finished as of this writing, some are not. Anyway, here we go!:

  • Other People’s Poetry by oppisum - Explicit - Unfinished - Okay, so. This was the fic that really sold me on the ship. I’d been casually reading fics in the fandom for a wide variety of ships, but this was the fic that dragged me into Gradence hell. The characterization is largely enjoyable, the author takes some pretty fun creative liberties with canon, and it’s one of the few fics I’ve read that actually includes Percival’s father. Even though it’s unfinished as of this writing, it’s still worth a read.
  • A Wizard’s Devotional by Polymathema - Explicit - Unfinished - Listen. Listen. I am a simple harpy with simple needs. These needs include painful, agonizing slow burn; religious guilt; and Credence and Graves having to lean on each other as they deal with PTSD. Poly absolutely, 100% provides. If you, too, are a simple creature with these same, simple needs, do yourself a favor and read this fic.
  • This Thing of Darkness by maggiedragon - Explicit - Finished - Listen. I am still a simple harpy with simple needs. These needs include Graves suffering a lot emotionally and Credence acquiring a pet. :P No, but seriously, this fic has one of my favorite interpretations of Graves, and I cannot express how emotionally compromised I was in the last couple of chapters. The payoff was totally worth it, though.
  • autumn dusk at central park by brawlite - Explicit - Unfinished - Is it cheating to put this on my rec list? I feel like this fic has already gotten a lot of attention in the fandom, but that’s for good reason. It’s got a fascinating interpretation of Credence, and I greatly enjoy the way that Credence gets to know Graves after canon. I can’t wait for the third chapter to come out. :B
  • We Get What We Deserve by maggiedragon - Explicit - Unfinished - Yes, I know Maggie is already on here. Yes, I know this is an AU and I don’t normally do AUs. To both of those objections I say: I really enjoy Maggie’s characterization of Graves, and this AU is just that good. I am enjoying the heck out of this even though, as of this writing, the author has left us on A HORRIBLE CLIFFHANGER AND IS A MONSTER. ;)
  • credence barebone and the king of the faeries series by saltpans - Mature - So do y’all remember that AU idea that was floating around, about how wizards/witches were all somehow (even if only tangentially) descended from the fae? Yeah, this fic series totally explores that, with some fantastic world-building and one of my favorite characterizations of Tina.
  • Do We Live series by lyonet - Teen to Explicit - This series isn’t strictly Gradence, but it features fairly prominently in many of the individual works, and I feel like I’d be remiss for not including a rec for this series. The character voices are fantastic, and the way the author has chosen to explore the greater magical society in New York is pretty interesting. (Also, the most recent work focuses on Queenie and frankly her inner monologue is just heartbreaking.)

The two series are technically unfinished, as they both have a fic in them that is currently in progress. If you’re not into reading unfinished things, you can have a satisfying reader experience by just reading the finished works.

Anyway, this is just a small sampling of some of my favorite fics from this pairing. Happy reading!

I FEEL THIS SO STRONGLY!!! I love gradence too and it's just a really fucked up dynamic that works so well in the movie. It's just not the easiest thing to write/read I think. But if you have recs I'd love to hear them!

I’m subscribed to @unicornmagic‘s AO3 alerts and when they started posting chapters of a Fantastic Beasts fic, I figured it was as good an excuse as any for finally watching the film. Then I read their (ongoing) fic. Then I went searching for more. NOW I’M FUCKING SPIRALING SEND HELP.

OG!Graves/Credences recs:

The Standard Book of Spells by canis_m **

Interludes from a world where Grindelwald never came to New York, and Graves is teaching Credence magic. (WiP, rated M)

credence barebone and the king of the faeries by saltpans **

The first thing Percival Graves does after being released back into the world is buy a new wand. He’s at Greymalkin’s for ten minutes and the only wand that works for him is raw aspen, whiter than bone and so rough that Graves gives himself a splinter conjuring a storm of birds. The wand—dragon heartstring, a most unusual wand for an American wizard, according to a flustered Greymalkin—feels wild, and Graves empties half his wallet on the counter and keeps his hand on his new wand all the way home.

The second thing he does is quit his job, because honestly.

(“Grindelwald did his research before he put on your face,” Seraphina says reasonably. “And it’s not like you’re open with your personal life. He has us all fooled.”

“He wore scorpion stickpins!” Graves shoots back, somewhat less reasonably.

Seraphina looks at Graves, his pressed creases, his immaculate shirt, the red ruby cufflinks he’s wearing to hide the starved brittleness of his wrists. “I’m sorry,” she says. It is not enough to make him stay.)

The third thing he does is get jumped by Credence Barebone in an alley. (Series, WiP, rated M)

Do We Live by lyonet **

The deal is simple: Jacob keeps his memories if Queenie helps interrogate Grindelwald. “President Picquery wants the Obscurus present as well,” the Auror says, standing in her kitchen and looking judgementally at the pastry Nifflers that Jacob left out to cool.

“His name is Credence,” Queenie says. “The Obscurus is Credence Barebone.” (Series, WiP)

Coffee Break by canis_m

Delightful office sex (and how to get it). (Established relationship, rated E)

Other People’s Poetry by oppisum

“A man like Grindelwald has no real love for anyone other than himself,” Graves says, pouring tea into each of the mugs. “He’s capable of caring for someone, but only for as long as they’re useful to him.”

The words hit Credence like a physical blow. He knows their truth, but the memories of slow touches and gentle words still linger. This man is so much like the Mr. Graves he knew before– still brusk, still self-assured to the point of arrogance, but with a vein of dry humor where only darkness lurked before. He still sets Credence’s heart pounding, and Credence wonders if he got what he deserved for his sins.

Or, in which Credence goes looking for the man who betrayed him, but finds someone else altogether. (Rated M)

shoreline by bygoneboy

In the aftermath of New York’s near-scandal, Auror Percival Graves is rescued from the cellar of his own home, having spent months as a prisoner to Gellert Grindelwald. President Picquery, hoping to grant him some relief and a reprieve from the magical and political scene, sends him on a sabbatical of sorts, shipping him off to a small No-Maj town on the upper east coast.

There he finds neither relief nor a reprieve, but a young man with a dark past, a familiarity he cannot place, and a loneliness to rival his own.

american heroes by bygoneboy

There’s a boy in an alley and his name is Credence. There’s a boy in an alley and Graves can’t stay away. It isn’t killing him, yet, but it will; he isn’t counting kisses he can’t keep, yet, but he will, he will. (Rated M)

a perfect storm swallowing over by damnslippyplanet

This was meant as an offensive spell, Percival had said the first time, when he’d demonstrated on himself, bright beads of blood appearing as he drew the wand-tip across his own arm, but there have been witches and wizards using it this way for a long time. It requires a great deal more finesse to cast this way. This is one of those lessons you would not have had at Ilvermorny. Privileges of having a private tutor who adores you.

Adores, he’d said, and hadn’t even laughed or smiled to indicate there might be a joke in at all. Credence had forgotten to breathe, had missed half the lesson in stunned silence.

He knew the word well by now. He said the spell under his breath, focusing his mind on the difference he needed to hold there- to hurt but not harm. Not in any way that was not welcome and wanted, not in any way he could not heal afterwards.

He let the wand move the last hair’s-breadth down and touch Percival’s skin. (Rated M/E)
