This is one of my writer’s market books. I have used it countless times to search for publications in hopes of finding someone that would be willing to publish one of my short stories, novels, or magazine articles. Notice all of the post its and post it tape sticking from the page, indicating specific publications that I have marked off.

This is the old fashioned, tedious, and rather annoying way to submit work for publication. You go through this giant book looking for a publication (one that will more than likely reject you, if they even bother to take the time to read your work…almost 4 years later and I’m still waiting for a response from His Work on that novel I wrote in high school…). You have to submit a really long proposal that seems way too formal and spend years developing the book, in the chance that you get published. Most of the listings in this book out right state that it may take over a year just to get a response from your proposal. If they like you’re proposal they may ask for the full manuscript, which will take at least another three months for them to respond to. If they publish your book, you’re looking at a minimum of at least a year before you see it in print.

Now, in writing, reach and technology class, we are using an internet platform to self publish our books. We will have the books finished in less than 12 weeks…

Which seems more convenient, less tedious, and annoying to you?

I don’t know anything about self publishing yet. I’ll have to see how this class works out before I answer this question, but I’m already liking the whole not going through a 500+ page book and having to wait three or more years for a response about my work…
