“Gentlemen of Nerve” released a century ago today - October 29th 1914 was a classic Keystone film, filmed at an actual outside event - this being a race car event at the Ascot Park Speedway near Los Angeles.

Standing with him are Mabel Normand & Mack Swain who would go onto to film legacy as Big Jim in “The Gold Rush” 11 years later.

I love the classic pose of the tramp here, it would not have been nearly as effective without the bamboo cane, which bent, a standard cane would not have given the same silhouette,  though he did use a regular one on occasion in his films, most times when he was playing a man of wealth or nobility.
