Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Usquepaugh is the oldest manufacturing business and the second oldest continuously operating business in Rhode Island. They have been grinding grain since 1696 with original granite millstones quarried from Westerly. Among their products are a variety of packaged mixes, including clam cakes, johnny cakes, and other Rhode Island specialties.
Kenyon’s hosted the popular Johnny Cake Festival from 1973 until 2014, when the event was canceled due to a death in the family. Plans to resurrect the festival are in the works, although they have not yet been announced. Guided tours of their facilities are available during certain special events throughout the year.
