Short, sweet, first thoughts on RADA Hamlet…

… by an emotionally drained me on the way home at 1.40 am.

I guess it’s got ‘spoilers’ if you don’t want to know how they staged some of it, so just be aware and don’t say you weren’t warned.

It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen on stage, and now quite possibly the best thing I’ve ever seen Tom Hiddleston in. (His Henry V was always my firm favourite)

I’ll write up my exact thoughts on the production as a whole tomorrow when I’ve had time to gather my thoughts and notes, but for now, I present you with the shallow squeals of a fan.

It’s the most intimate, incredible game of tennis.

I looked from one player to the next quickly as they delivered their lines.

Tom was born to play Hamlet.

Hell, just to be on stage doing Shakespeare.

I am further in awe of that man’s talent, just when I think he can’t get any better.

He pauses perfectly at the piano.

He lets his voice break as he sings.

He was so close to me, that when he got mad, I could see the vein in his temple pop.

I could see his tears glistening as they ran down his cheek.

He stood in front of me (though not looking at me) as he delivered “To be or Not to Be” and I cried.

He’s hilarious, and he’s heartbreaking.

The dancing is great. (Probably did his own choreography haha)

He dry humps the couch.

He’s turned so, from where I sat, he was facing my way as he spreads his legs, rests one hand on the back of the sofa, and he slowly gyrates towards the cushions a few times.

My eyes bulged.

He picks the women up with ease and wings them around while laughing.

The Scottish accent.

The jeans were basically sprayed on.

Left little to the imagination!

His top looked like someone had put it in the dryer by accident and it had shrunk - it kept riding up his stomach.

So every minute or so you got a flash of tummy and treasure trail, and he’s trying to pull it back down, but it sort of springs back up.

He looked at me three times with tears in his eyes and a heartbreaking expression.

Helena Bonham Carter and Allie Esiri (LoveBook app and A Poem for Every Night of the Year author) were in the audience tonight.

And he left with them - because I happened to be walking to my car and saw Tom leaving with them, so we said “hey tom! It was incredible!”

He smiled, sort of waved, and said “Thank you very much!”

All in all, one of the best nights ever.

I will never forget what I witnessed or how it made me feel.

Well done to King Kenneth Branagh, the cast, crew, and everyone at RADA.
