Last we checked, there was no course in college on skincare. With so many skincare products out there designed for those with mature skin, what’s a millennial to do? Dr. Perricone designed a four-piece line just for the special needs of twentysomethings called the PRE:EMPT SERIES. The backbone of this collection? His proprietary NRF2 ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT COMPLEX, composed of phytonutrients turmeric, olice leaf, green tea, and cress sprouts. Below, we break down some of the most common skin #goals and their dermatologist-designed solves from the line. (You can thank us later when someone mistakes you for a member of Gen Z.) KELLEY HOFFMAN
Best applied after the Exfoliating Pore Refiner, this potent treatment targets fine lines with alpha lipoic acid and peptides—and also contains the highest concentration of the proprietary NRF2 ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT COMPLEX.
The perfect next step after the Skin Perfecting Serum, this lightweight hydrator contains hyaluronic acid to nurture skin without clogging pores—and leaves your complexion glowing, thanks to vitamin C ester.
As a beauty writer, you could say I show favoritism to products with excellent shade names. Milk Makeup’s name game is particularly on point—think “That Red Tho,” “Name Drop,” and “Model/DJ.” But this new eco-conscious beauty brand (designed for cool girls on the go) is the total package. Eye-catching componentry? Check. No-frills application? Check. Fantastic formulas? Check. To celebrate Milk Makeup’s launch, I caught the four cofounders—Mazdack Rassi, Dianna Ruth, Georgie Greville Jasper, and Zanna Roberts Rassi—to find out how they created a brand that truly speaks my language. KELLEY HOFFMAN
Mazdack Rassi: “Milk is a cultural hub in NY and LA that sits at the crossroads of fashion, music, photography, art, and film. Milk Makeup is fun, eco-conscious and cool. Our multifunctional, high-tech formulas are built for the girl on the go who spends less time getting done up, [and] more time getting stuff done. Milk Makeup, Milk’s first-ever consumer product launch, is an extension of Milk’s culture and the community we have cultivated over the last two decades.”
Georgie Greville Jasper: “We say girl, but really it’s a universal spirit thing. Modern, ambitious individuals who stand out in a crowd because they have discerning taste and a fun, creative approach to life. They are self-aware, super driven people who work hard and play harder and look awesome doing both.”
Dianna Ruth: “Milk Melt technology is a high-grade blend of coconut waxes that melts on contact with body heat. Using this as a base in our formulas allows them to glide seamlessly onto the skin in seconds so you don’t need a brush—just use your fingers and go!”
DR: “Our packaging is modern and clean in its aesthetic—the markers are a nod to our art culture with their stationary feel and the coverage duo was created for the Milk girl on the go. Sleek, no-fuss, simplified packaging was the goal—so that the product stands for itself.”
Zanna Roberts Rassi: “I’m a Matte Bronzer fanatic because it’s so versatile. I swipe the chubby stick upwards, under the cheekbone, and blend up to lift the face and add some chisel! I use it on eyes for a quick coffee shadow. I swipe it on my pasty arms (half moon at the triceps!) to fake tone, and on my legs for some color before going out (rather than messy fake tan).”
THE FOUNDER FAVORITES
MR: “The Cooling Water stick is amazing. It’s my must for flying—it cools and revitalizes. I am also a Natural Deodorant convert. It smells so good and really works!”
ZRR: “Eye Vinyl in Bridge. The glossy lid look of this is the gorgeous effect I’ve watched makeup artists both editorially and backstage achieve by mixing many products. Eye Vinyl gets you the glazed lid look in one swipe but without the stickiness, and no homemade chemistry required.”
For Fresh co-founder Lev Glazman, it’s tea time all the time.
“What I love about the new Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask is how my face feels when I wake up. The formula has a corset-like effect for a visibly lifted look. The skin feels uplifted and firmer,” says Fresh co-founder Lev Glazman of the newest addition to his five-piece Black Tea Collection. A sister mask to the line’s Instant Perfecting Mask, the new overnight mask is a deeper, tightening treatment to the day mask’s antioxidant, antiaging boost. We caught up with Glazman to find out why we should all have a little black tea in our lives. KELLEY HOFFMAN, REPORTING BY MELISSA LANE
THE INGREDIENT “Tea has such a rich history. Considered one of the world’s most ancient remedies, it was discovered thousands of years ago in China, whose people cultivated its use as a medicine, as a ritual, and as an art form. We first turned to black tea because of its high levels of antioxidants, caffeine, and tannins, known to have antiseptic properties. But our true obsession began when we tried Kombucha, a fermented black tea blend whose recorded history traces back to 250 BC, during which people called it an ‘Immortal Health Elixir.’”
THE BENEFITS “We discovered that it helps bring back luster to dull skin and firm the complexion. The complex found in the Black Tea Collection is so effective because it calls upon the best of what the black tea tradition has to offer, acting as an ‘immortal elixir’ for amazing age-delay results.”
THE NEW FORMAT “Overnight masks are designed with thicker textures to fully envelop your face and help to nourish, moisturize, and uplift skin while you sleep. The Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask creates a cocoon over your face, sealing in moisture while protecting with the Black Tea Complex. Plus, with an overnight mask, you can apply a thick layer on the skin without having to worry about makeup application or how you look to the outside world.”
THE ROUTINE “I like to use Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask two to three times a week, alternating it with other nighttime creams. For the ultimate Black Tea experience, I recommend the following ritual:
A mini introduction to the skincare everybody’s talking about.
When it comes to beauty, certain places in the world have typically played favorites to different categories. Case in point: French women adore fragrance, American women love makeup, and Korean women are particularly keen on skincare. You, like anyone with a Wi-Fi connection, might have noticed a recent interest in K-beauty has been blowing up the Internet. Luckily, you’ve come to the right place: Sephora carries a number of top-tier Korean beauty brands—and below, we call out how you can incorporate a few key players that can help get your skin on track to dewy perfection. KELLEY HOFFMAN
Double cleansing is a great technique to give your face the deep cleanse it deserves. We recommend Erborian Solid Cleansing Oil, from a brand that blends Korean herbal science with modern French luxury. This is a fabulous two-in-one product that transforms from a wax to an oil upon touching your skin. Apply a pea-sized amount of the rosemary-scented balm to your face, gently rub it around, and watch this powerhouse melt away your makeup. Now, that’s just part one. Next, massage warm water onto your face, and you’ll see the formula shape-shift once again into a creamy lotion. After washing off your day, you’ll be left with soft, fresh, makeup-free skin.
GET YOUR SCRUB ON
If you really want luminous skin, you’ll need to incorporate an exfoliator—which is key for removing dead skin cells. Try Erborian Crème Scrub Beautifying Exfoliating Pearls, enriched with a complex of seven Korean herbs. The mint-green formula is mellow enough to use every day, but keeps your skin looking like new with sponge-like micro-pearls that roll over your face, removing impurities and refining texture. After you delicately buff your skin, your face will be feeling soothed and purified.
MASK IT OUT
When you have 20–30 minutes for a little “me time,” consider indulging your skin with a sheet mask, which you should use after cleansing. Tony Moly I’m Real – Rice Face Mask Sheet – Clear Skin is a triple-layered cotton sheet, and while it looks a bit like a hockey mask, it’s incredibly soft and drenched in invigorating serum. Formulated with rice extracts, it helps moisturize and brighten your complexion in a single supercharged dose. It should be noted it also contains a certain ingredient that’s been trending in Korean skincare for a hot minute now: snail secretion filtrate.
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE
One of the best ways to prepare your skin for moisturizing products is to layer on an essence. After cleansing and toning, try belif Hungarian Water Essence—this Korean brand’s ultra-light formula is made with Hungary water (Queen Elizabeth of Hungary’s beauty secret) and a mixture of apothecary herbs. It instantly brings back to life any lost hydration, leaving your skin looking supple and radiant.
CREAM OF THE CROP
Gel-cream moisturizers are lightweight and cooling, yet intensely hydrating. Try using one, like belif The True Cream Aqua Bomb, toward the end of your routine, as it forms a protective seal that helps lock in moisture. Enriched with lady’s mantle, an herb that helps reduce the appearance of pores and neutralizes skin-damaging free radicals, this formula quenches your skin’s thirst like no other.
Get dewy on demand with a face mist. Tony Moly Pocket Bunny Moist Mist (for dry or sensitive skin) and Tony Moly Pocket Bunny Sleek Mist (for oily skin) are not only the cutest products you’ve ever seen, but they also refresh skin, hydrate, set makeup, and keep you coming back for more. What we love about these purse-sized, pink rabbit-shaped spritzers is that they make skincare so fun. In case you didn’t know, this Korean brand’s name translates to “nice and trendy”—and we’re backing it.
Warm up to beautiful new finishes and formulations.

CAMEO: LESLIE BLODGETT ON THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF BAREMINERALS ORIGINAL FOUNDATION
We toast to the woman who started a foundation revolution.
In 1995, baby tees, mini backpacks, and liquid foundation were all the rage. Out of nowhere, a dynamic executive named Leslie Blodgett changed the complexion game for good with her mineral-based foundation—and for the past two decades, beauty lovers have remained fiercely loyal to the product. We caught up with the Bay Area–based Blodgett to discuss bareMinerals’s celebratory 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition Original Foundation Kit, her history of connecting with women, and what’s inspiring her now. KELLEY HOFFMAN
Congratulations on the 20th anniversary of your Original Foundation! Tell me about your experience with the product from the beginning.
I’m very much attached to it. I was coming into myself as a person—fully understanding who I was—at the same time I was bringing the world a product that no one had ever heard of. It had only five ingredients. It was natural and had this weird technique that you had to put the product in the lid, and swirl, tap, and buff it onto the skin. It was such a departure from what women were doing. But it never occurred to me to get sidestepped from my belief in the product.
But nobody cared, because it was too different and because we didn’t have advertising. Everyone just did typical advertising back then. So how do you get the word out on a brand new product like that? That’s where TV helped. And doing an infomercial really is when millions of women heard about the product. For me, it was, basically, a YouTube video. It was a tutorial on complexion on television.
How did you get your message across?
The product itself was revolutionary and innovative, because no one else thought about making foundation that way. The TV part was how we got the word out, but the product itself was just getting people to just think, “Huh, really? There is an option like that out there?”
You’re wearing makeup all day long. Do you want it seeping into your skin? You’re not giving your skin a break, only at night. What are you putting on your face? All I did was ask a bunch of questions to women.
Do you really want all those 50 chemicals on your face? Do you even know why you’re breaking out every day? And it just became a very strong word-of-mouth business.
Did its popularity inspire you to launch new products?
After we went on air for the first time, we found out there were forums online. And that’s where my personal connection to real women began. Not just my local friends in San Francisco, but people in Georgia and Alabama and Alaska and all over. So by meeting these women online, a lot of the new product ideas came from them or us collaborating together. So it was crowdsourcing back before there was a word for it. We had ideas, but they had better ideas.
Why do you think products that address complexion can feel so powerful?
When you help someone out with their complexion, they feel free to have a life, because it can hold some people back. And I’ve learned over the years that it can make some women not even want to leave the house. They don’t like meeting new people.
So, I feel landing on complexion has been eye-opening for me in terms of connecting with women.
I love the bejeweled design of your 20th Anniversary Original Foundation. Can you tell me about the new brush in the kit?
It’s all synthetic fibers. [It never] stays on the top. You can’t apply bareMinerals with product just on the top. That would be a disaster. The outside spins it in and drills it down into the center. It’s a dome. And it’s so soft. We’re huge believers in blending any foundation, which is why you’ll always see a brush with any of our foundations. The more you blend, the more it becomes one with your skin. So you get medium to full coverage with this. When you’re done applying it, go back over it with nothing on the brush. I really do believe that you can carry your bare brush around with you throughout the day. What product you put on in the morning is enough for the whole day. You don’t have to reapply it. It doesn’t go anywhere. You just [motions bare brush over face] reinvigorate it.
Where do you find inspiration today?
I went to a conference last week of young women who were creating their own personal brands. It was really fun. I’m doing a lot of angel investing in startups, and I’m meeting people with big dreams and big ideas and a lot of dedication to getting there. So that’s what is inspiring for me, to see this new generation of women that are on fire. I try and get in front of them so that they can get in front of me.
Get to know our four favorite under-the-radar perfume brands.
Admit it: While you love your classic fragrances, sometimes you’re in the mood for something a little more original. It’s like your perfect pair of blue jeans—they go with everything and always look great, but don’t feel quite as special as that one piece of indie jewelry that your best friend says is “so you” every time you wear it. Your fragrance wardrobe is the same deal. Sometimes, you just want to wear a scent that matches your unique personality. Below, we’d like to introduce you to a few of the coolest niche perfumes you’ll want to add to your fragrance wardrobe, stat. KELLEY HOFFMAN

Between day jobs, side hustles, and brunch dates, there’s a lot of juggling that goes into balancing a modern woman’s life. Thankfully, the brains behind Wander Beauty made a line for us in mind—and we couldn’t be more excited. “We only create luxurious multitaskers that will save you time and keep you looking gorgeous on-the-go,” explains Lindsay Ellingson, cofounder and creative director of the brand. We caught up with the supermodel-turned-entrepreneur to talk beauty tips, eyebrow woes, and wanderlust. KELLEY HOFFMAN, REPORTING BY JESSICA VELEZ
What inspired you to start your own beauty line?
“I started my modeling career in Paris over ten years ago. The first backstage beauty trick I learned was how to illuminate my complexion. It was so easy to do and the ultimate beauty enhancer. That’s when my passion for beauty sparked! For years I traveled the world testing formulas, different application techniques, and avidly followed trends on the runways in each city. After trying and testing everything, I realized something was missing. Like me, women are busier than ever, and I noticed our products weren’t keeping up. We started Wander Beauty to create internationally inspired, skincare-infused formulas that work double duty and help you downsize your makeup bag.”
Who is the Wander girl?
“Style savvy, constantly on-the-go, keeps her hands free with colorful crossbody bags and has a serious case of wanderlust.”
Can you share your favorite application tip or trick for a Wander Beauty product?
“As cofounder and creative director, I spend a lot of time focusing on creating innovative products that simplify your beauty routine yet keep it super versatile and fun. Our new Wanderout Dual Lipstick does exactly that and comes in four matte shade pairings. I personally curated them and tested each shade on a wide range of skin tones. On one side is a beautiful neutral for day, and on the other is a bright pop of color that’s perfect for a night out with friends. I love to create a petal pout by applying the bright shade all over my lips, and then I layer the neutral shade in the center of my lips, and press together.”
What are your personal favorite Wander products—and why?
“All of our products are daily must-have essentials for me, but I especially love our Flash Focus Hydrating Foundation Stick. It’s my secret to flawless, radiant skin. It’s infused with coconut oil and leaves my skin looking smooth. The buildable coverage is great for women like me who want one product that does it all! On my days off I use it as a spot corrector, and then build up to full coverage foundation when I have a meeting or an event. My absolute favorite product is our new Wanderout Dual Lipstick. It’s infused with lip-loving ingredients from eight different countries, including mango seed butter from India, sunflower oil from France, and marula oil from South Africa. Our four sets of dual lipsticks are the perfect pairings no matter what your plans may be!”
How has your modeling experience inspired Wander products?
“I draw inspiration from many aspects of my career and travels for all of our products. I’ve worked with the most talented beauty experts all over the world, it was the best beauty school one could have. We launched Wander Beauty with just one hero product, our On-the-Glow Blush and Illuminator. Our Coral Rose Blush was inspired by a picture I had taken of a mesmerizing sunset in St. Tropez while our Nude Glow Illuminator was inspired by my very first fashion show in Paris where I learned to illuminate my complexion with highlighter.”
What’s your go-to beauty tip when traveling?
“I always travel with our On-the-Glow Blush and Illuminator. I often fly the red eye and have to go to work straight away in the morning. Adding our Nude Glow Illuminator to my cheekbones not only hydrates my skin, but adds a beautiful sheen that makes me look much more fresh and awake. A subtle pop of color to my cheeks with our cream blush never hurts either! It’s the easiest way for anyone to fake a more youthful appearance.”
What’s a beauty fail you’ve experience while traveling, and is there a Wander product that would fix that for you now?
“I’m a girl who needs eight hours of sleep at night, yet I have never been able to sleep on planes. No matter how much water I drink, I end up with a dull complexion and very tired eyes. Luckily, I have a great trick for concealing dark circles: I swipe our Catch the Light Highlighter under my eyes, and then conceal over that with our Flash Focus Foundation. It instantly illuminates and conceals that area, and gives the illusion of an instant lift.”
Since you’ve traveled the world, is there a foreign beauty product or technique that has inspired any of the Wander products?
“For years, one of my biggest insecurities has been the shape of my eyebrows. They were waxed and then over plucked when I was in middle school and have yet to completely grow back. I searched everywhere for the perfect product to fix my shape. It wasn’t until I traveled to Japan that an artist showed me how to correctly fill in my sparse areas and thicken my brows. It was a game changer for me! That experience inspired me to create our Frame Your Face Brow Pencil, with an ultra fine tip that actually mimics the shape of hair for a much more natural look.”
What’s a good tip when it comes to packing beauty for a long trip?
“I love to pack multitaskers that can be used to create endless day and evening looks. Our products are great for travel because they can be worn sheer for day and then built up for nighttime. Less is more when traveling and it’s great to have products that can change with you throughout your day with no fuss, mess, or bulky makeup bag in site. I love our Liquid Eyeshadows and Love Lock Lip Gel because I can apply a sheer wash of color, or really dial up the drama with a metallic smoky eye and classic red lip!”
The writer, actress, and editor tells us her take on beauty and confidence on behalf of Clinique’s #FaceForward campaign.
Here’s the thing about Tavi Gevinson: She just puts it out there. And, quite often, she gets exactly what she wants back. How does she do this? Well, besides being insanely articulate, she exudes a confidence and vision that genuinely inspires others. People of all ages have felt moved by Gevinson’s work—be it her truthful point of view on style, feminism, or growing up. As a face of Clinique’s new Face Forward campaign, the unstoppable young woman sat down to talk with The Sephora Glossy about staying true to yourself, being in control of your look, and making your dreams come true. KELLEY HOFFMAN
How does it feel to be part of Clinique’s new campaign?
It feels good to be part of a beauty and skin care campaign that I feel reflects the role beauty basically plays in my own life and daily routine. For me, fashion was a lot about self-expression—and beauty is really about being comfortable and taking care of myself. I like experimenting sometimes, but usually keep it pretty simple. And Clinique products are really perfect for that.
I know you recently turned 19. What advice do you have for your future self?
Well, I really hope I won’t need advice. If we’re going back in time there’s lots of things I could say. I just think it’s good to remember your talismans. The things that bring you back to your self. And what you really care about. Sometimes for me it’s like a movie or a friend relationship. I don’t have a very clear picture of the future but I think it’s good to remember to come back to those things.
Do you have a philosophy or mantra regarding your skincare routine?
Just to not be lazy and gross. It’s so tempting every night to go to sleep without taking it off, but I know that doesn’t do me any favors. I think it’s also just that I feel a lot more refreshed and ready to face the world when my skin is not dry. Or when it’s protected. Or when it can be more of a canvas for more creative makeup.
Do you think that’s a powerful feeling to have your complexion in the place you want it to be?
For me, I like being in control of how I look and the image I’m projecting. Sometimes I don’t—I go through phases where I don’t look in a mirror, where I wear the same thing every day because I feel really focused on a project or I just don’t want to be thinking about it. Right now, the thing that makes me really excited every morning is the outfit I’m going to wear, and how I’m going to present myself outside, and how I’m going to feel walking down the street. You dress like the person you want to be and then you actually become that. I feel that with makeup and hair.
Are you drawn to Clinique’s aesthetics?
I like anything that basically looks like it would be the makeup on the vanity of a film still. It’s so classic. The yellow lotion is so iconic. On my simpler days, I’m trying to capture a vibe that’s, like, ‘90s Clinique ads or fresh-faced happy people in turtlenecks. I just love the way these things look on my dresser. It’s honestly very pretty.
What are your beauty basics?
Really just skin stuff. Not being dried out, and then also evening the tone. And you know, concealing things, but I’m usually just too lazy and I feel worse if it looks like I’ve concealed something—I’d rather just be, like, “there’s a pimple there.”
This campaign is about inspiring people to achieve what they want in the world—and you’re someone who seems to really do that. What are your tips for getting things done?
To-do lists. I have two kinds of to-do lists. I have long-term goals and then I have every day ones of what I’m going to do. So, every day I can take something from the long-term list and try to break it down and add it to the short term. If Twitter’s the first thing I look at in the morning, I don’t feel like doing anything. I’ve learned that I can’t wake up, reach for my phone, turn off my alarm, and stay on my phone. I think those things are motivation suckers for me or they make me insecure about whatever I’m trying to do or they make me think about some nebulous audience, or critical voice, and so I just think it’s important that you make a safe space where you can be productive and where you can trust your instincts. That is my living room or an office space or it can just be in a library if I feel protected enough. So, taking your needs seriously.
I know it’s easy to say, “I’m not going to check my phone,” and then fall back into old routines. What advice would you give to help someone really break the habit?
Turn it on airplane mode, turn Wi-Fi off. That’s for writing. I think it’s just that I know how miserable—I’d rather just get all my stuff done and then get to really relax, instead of having one foot in each place. It’s not fun—I don’t like to be on iChat while I’m doing work. Get your work done and then you can actually relax instead of getting your work done really slowly while kind of enjoying the conversation.
It really is just more logical when you put it that way. Why did you decide to become part of this campaign?
Well, I already used a lot of Clinique’s products, and it felt like an organic thing for me in that way, and I also just like being part of something that’s about skincare and feeling motivated and confident instead of necessarily about fixing your flaws. Which I think a lot of the language around beauty products can feel that way. I like that when we did the video shoot I was getting questions about staying inspired and stuff like that and I don’t think that feeling like a confident or strong or self-assured young woman is mutually exclusive with all the ways in which I also want to take care of my skin or the way I look or experiment with makeup.
What are your top confidence boosters?
I just think about the people I admire and how they also probably have self-doubt, and it’s just part of the ebbs and flows, but it’s not the truth. I think it’s just trusting that time passes and everything that’s up comes down and everything that’s down comes up. I just try to remember it’s temporary, and that it’s probably in my head, because I’m not, like, a murderer.
You know that feeling when you’re running late, trying to put on your makeup, and end up just dolloping on way too much product? While we’ll never be able to slow down time, here at the Sephora Glossy, we can at least help you take out some of the guessing game. Case in point: all five of the beauty products below claim to only require one drop of formula to give you your desired outcome. Below, I take them on their word—and discover how a little goes a long way. KELLEY HOFFMAN
THE TEST : This longwear foundation comes in a frosted glass container that looks as elegant and feels as substantial as a fragrance bottle. To apply, I shook the bottle, then warmed one drop of the liquid between my fingers. Next, I blended the concentrated formula on my freshly cleaned and moisturized face—across my forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and upper lip area. To my surprise, it covered it all, just fine. The foundation had a weightless feel, and offered a polished, soft-matte finish. The best part? It gave me full coverage while still looking natural.
THE TEST : With the tiniest squeeze of the little black tube, out popped a formula I instantly realized was unlike any other concealer I’d ever seen before. The consistency is super-emollient. The tiny drop was enough to blend (with my non-dominant ring finger) onto both of my under eye areas. As someone with genetically dark circles, I was in awe of how, ahem, amazingly it covered them up. I’m sure it has something to do with the fact it contains more than three times the amount of pigment in other concealers.
THE TEST : This is a really interesting formula—not only does it have the argan oil that’s central to Josie Maran’s products, it’s also 50% coconut water. The shimmery shades come in a mini eye dropper-esque bottle, and I had to shake it before I applied it. All I needed was one swipe from the doe-foot wand, and then I finger-painted the ultra-hydrating formula across my eyelid to blend. All I can say is: wow.
THE TEST : With a slight press of the tube, I applied a tiny squirt of the crazy high-pigment tar to its corresponding brush (included with purchase). I dotted the color on the center of my lips, then easily blended it out to the edges of my lip lines. I loved how quickly it dried to an on-trend matte. With a huge range of classic and edgy colors alike, I like that I can go from Plain Jane to Tumblr cool in one drop. Bonus points: formula is 100% vegan.
THE TEST : Several features of this polish immediately caught my eye. The formula is very high-pigment, so I noticed no streaking when I applied it. Plus, it comes with a wide brush, which made it quicker and easier to swipe on than most polishes. The plumping, high-gloss effect and patented plasticizer formulation gave me the gel look and last I love, without having to sit under a UV lamp. Yep—NAILS INC. nailed it again.
The DJ, fitness expert, and beauty lover dishes on CLINIQUE Pep-Start Eye Cream and more.
Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up feeling perfectly rested and peppy? While sure, sometimes we feel that way (like on a tropical vacation), the truth is, it’s a rare day we can get out of bed without a loud alarm, a coconut milk latte, and a feeling of deep regret for staying up way too late on Instagram. Enter: CLINIQUE Pep-Start Eye Cream. This orange tube of magic is filled with a hydrating, brightening, peptide-packed formula to help you get wide awake, stat. Busy girls, consider this eye cream your new BFF. At the product’s launch—a morning rave, natch— we caught up with DJ, fitness expert, and total girl crush Hannah Bronfman to hear her take on eye cream, morning mantras, and more.
Can you describe Pep-Start to me in your own words?
“It is a really great texture. It illuminates so it gives you a little bit of a pop, while also not drawing attention to the bad parts of undereye circles.”
How does it make you feel when you put it on?
“Refreshed and ready.”
Do you remember when you started getting into eye creams?
“Yeah—it’s been a recent thing. I’ve probably just gotten into eye cream in maybe the last two years. As I learn more and more about skincare and preventative skincare, I started really getting into eye cream. It’s not necessarily because I have crow’s feet now, but preventing that is something that I am really trying to do, actively, because I feel like it really does matter what you do now in the long term.”
How do you survive the morning? Do you have any essentials?
“I like to start the morning off with a hot cup of matcha and a great playlist in my house. I love to put on music when I first wake up. I think it can really set the tone of your day.”
What’s the vibe of your music like? Is it upbeat or low-key?
“Every day is different. Some days I’m in the mood for a really mellow morning, some days I’m really into an energetic, hip-hop morning. I think it just depends on the mood in which I’ve woken up.”
Are you more of a night or day person?
“I think both, to be honest. I love utilizing day hours and I love having fun at night and setting up maybe a dinner party—I love the idea of entertaining in the evening. But I do love to really have a full day and feel like I got a lot accomplished in my day.”
Do you have a mantra or something you tell yourself to pump yourself up for the day or a party?
“Well, my mantra for the day and my mantra for a party are very different. My mantra for the day is ‘Mind right body tight.’ And that usually helps me get ready for a workout, to really start to feel and hone in on my intentions for the day. And for a party, I always just—it’s not necessarily a mantra—but I always just think to myself, ‘Go in with an open mind, you never know who you’ll meet tonight—don’t worry about anything except having fun.’”
Take a break from hair breakage with this new line.
You know those pesky places where your hair seems weakest? We’re talking about that stripe where your colored roots meet your grown-out hair, or that dent where you put your hair tie in for your ponytail. Did you know there’s a name for those places? They’re called breakage “hot spots”—and either you have no idea what we’re talking about (probably because you don’t color or excessively style your hair) or, let’s get real, they’re the bane of your mane’s existence. The truth is, in order to have fun with your look and play around with styles, you need to have a foundation of strong, resilient hair. Bumble and bumble has zeroed in on this concept with their new Full Potential line—and below, we give you all the details in the five Ws. KELLEY HOFFMAN
People who are prone to thinning or breakage, or who just want fuller hair in general.
The Hair Preserve Blend begins working at the scalp to exfoliate, take away sebum, and give strands a clean environment to live. At the hair, it reinforces it to make it stronger, seals in moisture, and helps protect against UV damage.
For best results, use the entire line daily.
You’ll get healthier hair that you can create all kinds of ’dos with without any worrying about breakage.
We show you how to make the most out of these creamy crayons.
We’ve always been a fan of sooty, dramatic eyes. Ever since ancient times, kajal and kohl (note: you can use these terms interchangeably) have been helping enhance eyes—and as it turns out, the Cleopatra look is still as popular as ever. What we love about these liners is that they are very smooth and easy to smudge—so if you’re someone who finds it hurts to apply liner, or it skips when you draw it on, you’ll love this type. Below, we break down three different kinds of looks you can get using kajal and kohl and the best pencils for the job. KELLEY HOFFMAN
THE LINER LOOK
If you’d like to create a liner look, a good option is to go for a kohl pencil—like Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Kôhl Liner or SEPHORA COLLECTION Long Lasting Kohl Pencil. These will give you more structure and control than a chubby, cone-shaped kajal liner. Apply the liner close to your lashes using short strokes. Once you have built your shape, if you’re having trouble creating a smooth line, you can go back over it with a pointed smudge brush just over the edges to refine. If you tend to be oily, we recommend beginning with an eye primer and patting over your liner with an eye shadow in the same color using a smudge brush—just to help prevent any messiness. These pencils are great for lining your waterline as well, because they’re oh-so-soft.
THE SMOKY LOOK
A more intense take on the liner look is to smoke it out. Begin by wrapping your eye with your liner—then smudge with your finger (or a smudge brush, if you prefer). This look is all about embracing chic messiness—it’s a lived-in cool, quick take on eyeliner. Here we wouldn’t really suggest using a primer, because you want to welcome the imperfection. Try using the Yves Saint Laurent Couture Kajal Eyeliner or the Laura Mercier Kajal D’Orient Eye Liner. However, if you have smaller eyes, we’d suggest using a kohl pencil because the tips of the kajal liners are a lot larger. Additionally, we suggest just focusing on the middle and outer corners—rather than on the inner corners—to help open your eyes.
THE SHADOW LOOK
The girl who does the smoky look could do it on the bus to work—but for a shadow look, it’s a bit more editorial and not for beginners. To start, we suggest using a matte neutral eye shadow that’s slightly deeper than your skintone throughout the crease of your eye. Then, line the lower lash line with Yves Saint Laurent Couture Kajal Eyeliner or the Laura Mercier Kajal D’Orient Eye Liner and work your way up—just a apply a sketch of the product into the outer corner and use a pointed smudge brush to blend it in small circles in the crease. When it comes to applying this look, think less is more: apply, blend a little, take a step back, etc. Next, set your look with an eye shadow in the same shade as your kajal. The reason why you’d use kajal instead of just eye shadow is that this will give you an opaque, intense look. Remember, this isn’t a liquid liner look—there will be some sootiness that you won’t have full control over, but starting with an eye primer can help.
“Lotus is all about preventing and preserving,” says Lev Glazman, cofounder of Fresh. “By taking steps to preserve the life of your skin earlier, you’re better off later on down the road.” It turns out business is blooming for this fabulous flower too: In addition to the three popular products already in its well-loved Lotus line, Fresh is launching a new eye cream. The Sephora Glossy caught up with Glazman to find out the secrets of this power plant’s success. KELLEY HOFFMAN
“The lotus has been cultivated in eastern Asia for over 3,000 years. The plant is considered sacred in many cultures, but I especially love the way the Buddhists regard it. They believe that it is the ultimate symbol of complete purification, as it journeys through water to rise above the surface and blossom into a stunning flower. Various parts of the lotus have been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. After doing clinical tests, we were stunned at this ingredient’s high levels of polyphenols, one of the most powerful antioxidants known to defend against wrinkle-causing free radicals.”
“Fresh’s Super 7 Complex uses a specific technology to maximize the hydrating, radiance-boosting, and protective benefits of seven super-charged ingredients.
•Lotus flower extract, sourced from Laos, defends against wrinkle-causing free radicals.
•Blue-green algae helps to visibly minimize early signs of aging.
•Hibiscus fruit extract boosts hydration.
•Fig fruit extract helps to preserve ideal moisture levels.
•Vitamin C is known for its antioxidant and protective properties.
•Vitamin E helps soften the skin.
•Vegetable glycerol attracts water and seals in moisture.”
Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream: “What sets this apart from other moisturizers is Fresh’s Super 7 Complex that preserves and protects a youthful complexion. One of the most important things needed to preserve a youthful appearance and to prolong the life and health of the skin is hydration. The loss of hydration ages our skin very quickly, not just pollution and free radicals.”
Lotus Youth Preserve Radiance Lotion: “This was created for those Lotus Youth Preserve Face Cream fans who were looking for a highly effective, yet fast-absorbing formula. It’s perfect to use if there is no need for a richer, heavier moisturizer.”
Lotus Eye Gel: “This is a refreshing formula that acts almost as a serum, specifically designed to address puffiness and dark circles.
Lotus Youth Preserve Eye Cream: “This is designed to be more nourishing, delivering hydration while preserving a youthful appearance. It’s infused with Fresh’s proprietary Super 7 Complex, plus star fruit extract for a boost of powerful antioxidants.”
“The new Lotus Youth Preserve Eye Cream does not replace Lotus Eye Gel, as the benefits of each formula differ. The eye gel can be carried and reapplied throughout the day to refresh the eye area, while the eye cream can be used morning and night for extended age-delay benefits.”
“You can have someone do your makeup and look beautiful, but if you can’t replicate it, then what’s the point?” asks Tim Quinn, Giorgio Armani’s Celebrity Face Designer and VP of Creative Artistry. “I think that’s why Luminous Silk Foundation has held up over time,” he says of brand’s cult-favorite product. “One of the secrets to any good beauty product is that you can do it yourself.” We couldn’t agree more. The Sephora Glossy recently caught up with Quinn to learn how to get the famous Armani Glow and more. KELLEY HOFFMAN
Do you have a first beauty memory?
When I was young, my grandmother remarried and moved to New York. She became rather glamorous—she had all her furs and all her makeup, and she would sit at her beauty counter and do her lipstick and I used to watch. That was where my initial obsession with makeup started to come in. She grew up in the country in Connecticut, and when she moved to New York she was more sophisticated. That’s when I saw that makeup could really transform you. That was always in the back of my head. Then I went on to be a stockbroker and earned a degree in economics. I must have hit my head or something!
So how did you segue into becoming a makeup artist?
Accidentally, actually. I was working in finance in Florida, and I realized it wasn’t for me. I quit my life and I started doing different things. I worked for a tequila company, I bought an ice cream store, I modeled. And then I ended up in Milan thinking I might want to get into photography. I started apprenticing with a makeup artist out there and it evolved over the next couple of years. I met great people, and then along came Armani back in 2001.
How do beauty and fashion go hand in hand? And how do they differ?
With fashion, there’s so much work and creativity that goes into it—it’s such a team effort. That’s why I sometimes think it’s unfair for someone to come in with a magazine picture and say, “I want to look like this.” There’s a whole team behind that. There’s the hair, the lighting—one thing just can’t stand alone. I sometimes hate when someone compliments just the makeup, because that might mean the rest of the look doesn’t look so great, because it’s about the overall look. I love when someone just looks elegant or you notice them, but you’re not quite sure what it is because it’s this presence. It’s supported by all of that; the fashion, the beauty, the perfume; it’s the aura.
You’ve worked with some of the most famous women in the fashion and entertainment worlds. What are the top requests or concerns you hear?
The fear is the complexion. Whether it’s a young girl or a lot of well-established actresses. The trends come and go, but if the skin looks flawless, everything works better.
What is the signature Armani Glow?
One of the keys to our runway look is this luminous, glowing skin. Mr. Armani loves the idea of a woman’s glow rather than looking made up. The Luminous Silk Foundation gives you this natural finish and we have a wonderful range of the Fluid Sheers that can be added for a little extra luminescence—and one that has a bit of a gold for a slight touch of a sunkissed look. I was watching an awards show the other night and people really embrace that look of glowing skin. It looks great at any age. One of the things with these young girls too, when you’re young you have this natural glow in your skin that women who are 40+ all want. It’s naturally associated with youth, and we’re all obsessed with youth. I love the idea of using the Fluid Sheers here because it gives you the ability to control the glow, so you don’t wind up looking like an oil slick. That can be a problem sometimes when you go overboard with glowing.
How do you get the look?
I like to use a primer to help neutralize any kind of discoloration of the skin, and then I use a little bit of foundation. When I’m on the red carpet, I would just use the Luminous Silk Foundation, and around the eye area tap a little bit of the Fluid Sheer #2. I really love #2; it’s like a champagne tone that works well on most skin complexions. It gives it that glow you see around the eyes all the time, keeping it on top of the cheekbone.
