Lance didn’t really know when it started. There were too many incidents to pinpoint its exact origins. It could have began when he tried to jump out the window when he was six to prove that he could totally fly Marcos. Or when he was nine and ate a bee when Lily said they were dangerous, because how dangerous can a chubby little bumblebee be? It was like it was always there, this little voice urging him to prove his worth through dangerous tasks.
it wasn’t until he was fifteen when the real trouble began.
Once again, the origins of the power he was given was unknown to him. He sorta just woke up one day and bam, he felt the emotions of everyone in the house. To say it was overwhelming would be an understatement. He could practically taste his mother’s worry and his sister’s sadness and he just wanted to help them you know? Ease their pain, because no one deserved to feel those emotions. Perhaps it was then that he became aware of the feelings his felt since he was a kid. He had a form of lachesism, or at least that’s what the therapist his parents forced him to go to told him.
It took countless hours of research to figure out what the hell lachesism even was, since it wasn’t something that simply popped up in everyday conversations. And the whole emotions things? Yeah, it took a while to figure out how that fit into this mess.
In fact, he was still trying to figure it all out when he went to the Garrison, which was yet another mess because he could feel all of the students’ emotions too. His family’s emotions were barely a sliver of what he had to endure every day. There was just, just so much sadness here. It was like a new wave hit him every time he moved, encasing him in this bubble of hurt. It was too much at times, causing him to spiral into anxiety attacks when Hunk was asleep.
Yet, he thrived in the pain he was forced to endure everyday. Maybe it was the fact he was given this power to know what everyone was feeling, but he finally felt like he was worth something. Who else could stand feeling other’s emotions constantly thrown at them, if they were not at least worth something. Call it middle child syndrome, but Lance finally felt like he could make a difference. He could help these people! All he had to do was try to keep them happy and their sadness would begin to melt away.
Thus, class-clown Lance was born at the age of 16, who was always there to crack a joke. He learned to talk more to make others feel comfortable and laugh loud enough for everyone to feel included. Finally, Lance felt clarity in his mind for the first time in years, and he was able to truly believe he had worth.
However this only solved the problem for a bit, as smiles can only go so far. Soon the sadness returned, albeit weaker than before, but it was still there. This unsettled Lance more than he thought it would. How could he help now? How could he prove he was more than just a cargo pilot? He was already struggling to keep up with Keith and now this?
It was when Lance was comforting Hunk after a panic attack did he realize just how far his powers could reach.
The two had been cuddling when Lance felt thispull, this tug towards Hunk’s emotions that he never felt before. He followed it of course and the feeling was indescribable. It was like he drowning in Hunk’s emotions, each feeling circling around him, urging him to touch, to feel. Shakily, he mentally reached out for the anxiety that kept bubbling up and it was like he sinking in this void of emotions that was endless. It wormed itself inside of Lance until it was gone, residing within him rather than Hunk. It was terrifying.
But Hunk’s smile after it was over, his slight laughter as he stated he felt better than he had in years, made it all worth it.
After being swept up in the whirlwind that was Voltron, Lance knew once again that he had worth. It wasn’t in his shooting capabilities or in his powerful bond with his lion or even in the persona he still continued. No, it was in the way he took away Pidge’s worry and soothed it with reassurance, how he slipped into Shiro’s room at night and removed the terror that plagued him to allow him a decent night of rest, and in the way he harbored Allura and Coran’s homesickness for the world they lost and offered them the feeling of family instead. This was his purpose, his way of showing his worth in subtle ways.
It took a toll on Lance though, the emotions he took away finding a home in his chest, weighing him down. He could feel the anxiety in his fingertips, the fear in his bones, and the never ending sadness in his mind. But it was worth it wasn’t it? He was protecting his teammates from the pain of these awful emotions, keeping up the spirits of Voltron through his pain. It was worth it.
Blue didn’t think so. She’d often lecture Lance on overdoing it and how it truly wasn’t worth it, but couldn’t she see that it was? By him feeling this, surviving through this, he was able to see Pidge laugh freely and Hunk grow into his role as a paladin. Watch as Keith became more open to the group, his previous doubts now backed up with trust in his team.
Oh cub, can’t you see how it weighs you down, how it tears you apart? She had asked one morning, specifically after a nasty panic attack. Can’t you see you’re worth more than this? That you’re more than just Lance, that you’re my paladin who doesn’t deserve this? Can’t you see?
But in the grand scheme of things, his wellbeing doesn’t matter, only that Voltron can still form. He was simply helping the process and he would be there for his team no matter what.
Despite this, Lance began to close in on himself. He spent hours upon hours with Blue, strengthening his powers so he could become more. He learned to manipulate the emotions, how to expel them onto others, making them feel the pain he suffered through each and everyday. He still went through his daily cleaning, helping each Paladin in whatever form they needed before heading back to his hangar and remaining there till night. The persona Lance built back at the Garrison had begun to crack, but it was fine because he was becoming stronger right? Now he could truly protect his team. He was no longer an emotional dump. He could send those emotions to whoever he pleased. He had worth.
The team began to get worried, however. They noticed how Lance began to close up, disappearing for hours on end. They knew they had to do something about it, but how?
“Maybe we could corner him?” Keith suggested, shrugging.
“No, no, he wouldn’t tell us what was wrong if we did that. How about we call him up to the bridge?” Hunk replied, glancing at Shiro, who was pacing.
“I don’t think that’ll work Hunk, you’ve seen Lance. Our best bet might be to go down to his hangar and speak to him there, the Blue Lion might help back us up,” Shiro sighed, looking down the hallway to where the hangars were,”I know he might freeze up but it’s the only option that gives us the backup of a lion.”
The team nodded, Hunk simply turning silently, before beginning their dissent towards the hangars, nervousness tickling the back of their necks. It wasn’t long until they all stood before the door of the Blue Lion’s hangar. With a quick glance at the team Shiro was about to open it when it opened on its own silently, shocking the team slightly. Blue hummed quietly in the back of their minds before disappearing, allowing the paladins to enter her hangar.
Hunk almost fainted at what awaited them, the rest gasping at the sight before them.
There in the middle of the hangar, sat Lance surrounded by a hurricane of black that swirled faster with each passing second. His eyes were squeezed shut, not seeing the paladins, yet they all felt like he just knew. It was when he opened his eyes that all hell broke loose.
I'm saying this from the perspective of a shipper I guess but looking at all these Sheith moments got me thinking.. Would it be possible that the creators themselves are actually planning for them to be canon at some point? But because of some complications..(not gonna name it) they decided to scrap it off? Do you think this is possible? Although Keith telling Shiro he is like a brother to him kinda made me sad? lol I have got so many questions so I can't wait to see more of this amazing series!
Hi anon! The thing is, writing and animation for shows like this are done way in advance. When season 1 came out, I imagine the plot up until seasons 3 or 4 was already set in stone. And Voltron, like most shows, works off a “TV Bible” that had all the major plot points outlined right when the series was first pitched so,, once you plan things out like that I think it’s difficult to make big changes to characters’ relationships.
I think the writers have also made it clear that they are going to go ahead with their narrative rather than catering to popular fannon, particularly when they’ve told certain fans they don’t agree with their mentality at all. Even with things like how they mentioned Allura was a teenager like all the other paladins, a lot of people didn’t headcannon that, but the writers stood by it. It’s their own story after all, and I don’t see why they should change it. As for sheith, we know the writers have outright told people that harassing shippers isn’t okay and they’re completely against it.
There are also plenty of writers, animators, and VAs who have liked clearly romantic sheith fanart, cosplay, or pro-sheith posts (and gotten backlash for it). So we know they’re certainly not opposed to shipping it. And I mean, whether it’s romantic or not, we know that the cast certainly seems invested in their dynamic. The fact that their relationship and character development is by far the most fleshed out is certainly apparent. Here’s also some stuff staff has drawn that shows they at least like Shiro and Keith’s bond:
So anyway, despite how the fandom can be, I don’t think it would necessarily deter the writers or dissuade them from following through with major writing decisions. And given how supportive the staff has been of sheith, I don’t think they would suddenly just abandon whatever plans they had for their character development together. Under the hypothetical that they did make sheith canon, I think they would just maybe adjust how they went about it so that the fandom could kind of like, ease into it, and hopefully not be too mad about it. Though I have no doubt people would still harass the staff if sheith happened, which just…makes me feel really bad to be honest…
On the BOM line though anon, I don’t think it goes against sheith at all and here’s why:
DANCE MAJORS AU. (Part 1, Part 1.5,Part 2, Part 2.5, Part 3 finale) Contemporary Ballet Dancer Shiro is someone everyone admires and basically Everyone’s Crush™ but he already have his eyes set on a certain new hip-hop dancer recruit next door who’s always wearing red. He doesn’t have the guts to ask him out–at all. However, he asks if he could teach him hip-hop dancing.
Shy anon here! Do you think Keith has experience flirting? *Cough Lance* I'm a Klance shipper too, but to shy to talk to you :3
Do I think that Keith has experience flirting?
No. I really don’t. The Voltron twitter stated that the thing he dislikes the most is “tomfoolery” and I am 99% sure that in his definition flirting is a part of that. It also doesn’t really fit his character - he is way too honest and open about everything. And he gets embarrassed easily (we all know that he usually has no problems with doing dumb stuff with the team but once it crosses a certain line, he just refuses. that’s what happened in the bad sound effects/laser guns scene hah). Even just the thought of flirting with someone probably makes him embarrassed.
That being said… he can’t be embarrassed if he isn’t aware that he’s flirting ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Who would have that that this is the way he would go?
It was a mission they could handle. They had been assured that many a time. So, why had it all gone so wrong?
Lance and Keith had been tasked in going on ahead to scope out the ship, and make sure that it was truly empty as they had assumed it to be.
But maybe that was their first mistake.
The two Paladins had realized things were too quiet when they had found there to be no traps whatsoever. There had to be at least some traps in all of this.
“Keith, i-it’s too quiet here. Something’s wrong here.” Lance whispered, body taught as he looked everywhere he could. Not having anything happen was worse than having something happen.
“Yea, I agree. Maybe we should - ” Keith would have continued, but a soft ‘woosh’ through the air next to his head alerted him.
“Shit - !” He wheezed, turning his head to follow the arrow-like object, only to see, in a sort of slow motion, the object make its way straight toward his partner.
The Blue Paladin had turned to see what had caught Keith’s attention, but felt the air rush out of him quickly.
He fell backwards, not quite able to tell what had happened. All he knew right now was that something hurt like the hottest flames of hell in his chest.
The Red Paladin ran for his fallen friend, sliding on his knees next to him. He picked him partially up gently, laying his torso in his lap as his eyes glanced from spot to spot over him.
“Lance, holy shit, are you okay?!” He breathed before his eyes came to rest on the arrow lodged deep into Lance’s chest. It had just barely missed its target - just slightly below his heart.
The edges of his vision were beginning to get hazy. He knew where he was - kinda - but thought it strange that it was warm.
Floors are cold. So …
He was in Keith’s lap. Well then. At least he was warm now. Screw cold floors, he liked this much better.
He heard mumbles. A voice? Oh, Keith. Right.
Dazed, Lance looked up at Keith, blinking before his vision cleared a little bit. He looked - scared? Were those tears??
Said Keith was in fact beginning to cry as he held Lance.
The arrow was too far in to try and get out without causing major bleeding. And he was afraid that if he tried to get Lance back to the castle to a healing pod, that it would take too much time.
But he had to do something. He couldn’t just let him die. Not now. Not in his arms.
The Blue Paladin could tell he was fading. His insides hurt way too much for there not to be something wrong.
“Keith?” He asked, his usually loud and boisterous voice now scarily quiet.
“Keith … am I - am I dying?”
“No. You’re not gonna die. I’m gonna get you out of here, safe, and very much alive.” Keith rattled off, glancing around to see what he could use to possibly help them.
And to his great luck, there was fucking nothing.
“Keith …” Lance whispered, even quieter now. The rest of his thoughts were interrupted by his own coughing, which led to blood coming up.
It splattered over his armor, the deep red a stark contrast to the slightly dirty and offset white it normal was. The blue of his symbol was tainted with the blood.
“K-Keith … I-I’m not gonna make it, am I?” He sighed, sagging a little as he began to accept his fate.
He was going to die here. In Keith’s arms. On a supossedly abandoned Galra ship.
What a boring way to go.
Keith felt his blood boil.
“Don’t you *dare* give up on me, McClain. I am going to get your sorry ass out of here, whether you believe it or not.” He spat, coming to the conclusion that it may have to be their best bet to just bring Lance back to the castle.
“Everything’s gonna be fine, okay? You’re gonna live, a-and, you’ll get to see your family again. Cuba, right? Veradero Beach?” Keith tried, hoping to instill some motivation into the fading Blue Paladin.
Wow, Keith was really pretty, wasn’t he?
“Keith, you have r-really pretty eyes, ya know that?” He pondered, voice barely there now. His eyelashes were fluttering as he fought to keep his eyes open.
But he just wanted to sleep. Sleep sounded nice right now. Maybe he could just take a little nap …
A blush filtered to Keith’s cheeks.
“Wh-What? What’re you saying right now?” He rushed out. He was getting worse.
Oh god he was closing his eyes.
“Lance. Lance, stay with me buddy. Stay awake for me, okay? Please.” He pleaded, gently tapping Lance’s cheek to try and wake him up.
Man, Keith was really warm. His hand too. Oh, that was nice.
He leaned into the touch, smiling softly as his eyes closed once more.
“Y’re s’ w'rm, Keith~” He hummed, voice unbelievably soft. He felt comfy, and safe.
He was always safe with Keith.
Keith could feel himself losing it. He was scrambling to keep Lance awake, but he knew it was a losing battle at this point.
“L-Lance, no. Come on …” He muttered, eyes wide as they began to tear up again.
He couldn’t lose someone else. Not now.
But it might be the sad truth at this point.
Lance’s vision was darkening. It had been, but now he could really tell. It felt like the lights had been turned out.
“Keith?” He asked, one last time, slowly curling into the warm chest plate of said Paladin. He winced at the pain in his chest deepening.
“Keith … tell my family I love them, 'kay? A-And the others. I -” More blood spit up, but more came with the hacks this time. His vision went darker.
“I love you, too.” He whispered, opening his eyes as much as he could to get one last good look at Keith.
The sleek black hair hidden under a helmet looked like the night sky. The violet eyes reminded him of a sunset on the ocean.
He reached a hand up, and cupped Keith’s face ever so gently.
“I love you.”
No. No no no no. No. He refused. He refused to have Lance die in his arms.
His breath hitched at the confession. God damn it. This idiot had the worst possibly timing.
“Lance - I … I love you too.” He choked out, tears coming full force now as he cradled Lance in his arms.
The tears stung badly, and he leaned into the gently touch, laying his own hand overtop Lance’s.
“Don’t leave me. P-Please.” He sobbed, tears now falling onto Lance’s visor and face as he wept.
Keith was so pretty. Even when he cried.
“I’ll see ya later, Keith. And then … th-then we can be together, yea?” He sighed out, his breaths more raspy and of less oxygen now.
He could feel himself going. It was … peaceful.
“S-See ya 'round, K-Keith …” were Lance’s last words before his body finally sagged, now lifeless.
Keith would never see those beautiful blue eyes sparkle as he talked about Earth.
He would never see that stunning smile take over when he looked at him.
He would never be able to kiss those plump cinnamon lips, and would never hear them utter those three words again.
No one spoke that night as Keith came back, carrying the fallen Paladin in his arms.
No one spoke of the tears running down Keith’s face.
No one spoke of the heartbreak they all felt.
No one spoke of how Keith cried himself to sleep, gripping an olive green jacket to his curled up form.
Aha I'm already in love with your insta au and I really want more do you have any headcanons? Like for the other characters as well and how they are incorporated into the au??
omg yes!! i have like two waiting to be posted and 4 more drawings im currently working on for it!
basic au hcs
everyone is basically still in university in this au
allura is getting her masters in international and diplomatic studies and is currently fluent in over 10 languages
shiros getting a phd in applied mathematics and theoretical physics
pidge is an undergrad double majoring in computer science and mechanical engineering
lance is an undergrad majoring in astrophysics
hunk is an undergrad majoring in mechanical engineering
keith was majoring in astrophysics until he dropped out sophomore year and now works in a garage fixing bikes and cars
lance and allura both run popular beauty/lifestyle instagrams and actually met through insta when lance shot her a message asking if she wanted to do a photoshoot with him
they’ve been best friends ever since
hunk and lance are childhood friends and it was hunk who introduced lance to pidge (who he met through their engineering courses bc how could he not talk to the small genius who had the gall to tell the professor they were wrong the first week of classes)
pidge and keith have been best friends ever since they met freshman year in one of their gen ed courses (turns out mutual hatred/annoyance is a great foundation for a lasting friendship)
shiro and allura 100% had a meet cute where shiro spilt his coffee all over her shoes in a campus coffee shop
he felt rlly bad
they were also v nice shoes
allura promised it was fine and that he could repay her with a date this friday
keith and pidge were actually there to witness this and they’d never seen shiro so red and nodding so fast he looked like one of pidge’s short-circuiting robots (when shiro denied this pidge sent him side by side video analysis from what she recorded on her phone earlier that day and the bot that fried itself the day before)
keith knew and was a follower of lance’s insta way before they even met or he even knew pidge was friends with him or that they had gone to the same uni and even had some freshman classes together
pidge was 100% aware the second she met hunks loud mouthed roommate that he was the same guy she caught keith stalking on insta multiple times every week (the only reason he even has one is bc pidge convinced him to get one back in freshman yr bc there was no point of posting embarrassing/stupid pics of ur friend if said friend wasnt going to see them)
shiro never told him that his gfs best friend was the same lance either
keith is surrounded by traitors
everyone knows about this but lance
i have many more but i dont want this post to be too long!
Okay, serious talking now. What would be the worst point in each paladin to attack. We know about Lance's insecurities, but what else? What about the others? I want to read your opinion because you do awsome meta and character analysis.
???????? Wow, thank you ;A; And I’m not sure if I can answer this well for all paladins but I’ll try^^ [tl;dr at the end because this post has gotten really long]
Let’s start with Lance. Lance honestly has many points to attack, which is probably why this fandom is so focused on langst. It’s easy to create content for that because we have so much to work with:
1. his insecurities about his role on the team and in general
I already wrote a lot about it here (and also here a little), desperately trying to figure out how strong these insecurities are but there is no doubt that they exist^^ Surprisingly, they actually seem to be very strong, to the point that fandom only exaggerates them slightly. Lance is just pretty good at hiding them.
Lance is homesick. Really homesick. He’s homesick to the point that he would leave a party to hang out alone and get lost in his memories:
He is also the one that references his life on Earth the most often. “I missed 14 days for a stomachache in 3rd grade that I never really had”, “That’s the tagline of 6 of my favorite movies” - those are little things, not very important in the overall picture but they prove that he thinks back to his past.
3. fear of death/unnatural things that are dangerous
Lance isn’t afraid of aliens, that’s not what I mean with it - I’m talking about the episode Crystal Venom where the castle was trying to kill him. Here is an analysis on how deeply that episode really disturbed him. As for his fear of dying - he is the one that has been confronted with death the most of all the paladins (excluding Shiro - but Shiro has lost/repressed lots of his traumatic memories). Here’s proof:
S1E1. He thought Hunk had died in the explosion when they were trying to retrieve the yellow lion. S1E4. The explosion nearly killed him - “you would have died if Hunk and Coran hadn’t gotten a new crystal” (Pidge, S1E6). S1E9. He almost got sucked out of an airlock. S2E2. The snake monster thingy got free of the stone and Lance was in the direct line of fire.
He was the one screaming “we’re gonna die, we’re gonna die!!” in S2E5 when they had to hold the lenses for the wormhole maker. Lance is scared of death not despite but because he knows it the best of all of them. He almost died multiple times and he saw his friends almost dying multiple times (the Hunk thingy I included above, when he saved Coran from the explosion, when he thought he had to save Coran in “Crystal Venom”, when Pidge in the cube episode got shot down and didn’t reply to them). Look at his reaction vs the reaction of the other paladins when they thought Allura had died:
They are all shocked and disbelieving, meanwhile Lance:
He’s neither shocked nor disbelieving, he’s just hurt. One of his deepest fears became reality and there is nothing he could do about it.
if you ever get writer’s block when writing sheith fics, strategically place a copy of @drisrt’s art next to your work desk. it’s a constant source of inspiration tbh and always gives me strength to keep on writing ❤️
