Tuscany, my love

A/N: Welcome to my contribution for the New Author’s Month over at @loveinpanem

Nearly two months and 16,000 words later and I can finally present it to you. But this wouldn’t have happened if for a couple of very special people, starting with the awesome ladies fom LIP: @thegirlfromoverthepond, @akai-echo, @titaniasfics and @louezem. Thank you for your dedication and all the work you put in. You’re doing a wonderful job.

My biggest, warmest and most heartfelt THANK YOU is - together with INCREDIBLE beta @honeylime08 - for my awesome mentor: the unbelievably talented, witty and wonderful @xerxia31
I loved working with you so much, and look forward to our future cooperation. :D

And last but not least: to my best friend, Pez. She’s not on tumblr, but she helped with this story like it was her own. I love you so much, bestie!

Enough said, let’s start with the story. I really hope you enjoy! Thanks for all the support! :)

TUSCANY, MY LOVE

“If you don’t show in the next five minutes, she’s gonna have a heart attack.”

Katniss groans, the strap of her bag constantly slipping from her shoulder. With every other step, she nearly crushes her heels with the suitcase she’s pulling behind her. Damn high heels, she should have worn her sneakers. She’s a fit person: she jogs, she visits the gym at least twice a week, she loves hiking. Ok, fine. She could eat a little healthier, but between jobs and her sometimes very atypical hours she can’t find the time to cook as well. So it’s fast food most of the time. But all in all she thinks of herself as a person with good constitution.

Right now, she huffs like a railroad engine, and her feet hurt like she ran a marathon. All the while she tries to hold her cell to her ear and listen to her best friend’s calm but slightly sarcastic voice. Even though she’s running through a busy airport, she can hear Prim’s hysterics in the background.

Code Red it is.

I keep seeing tweets like “okay so america is a dystopian novel now wheres the 16 year old girl to save us” and other condescending shit like that and i just….

where are the girls who are saving us you ask?

oh i don’t know, they are at the Oceti Sakowin camp fighting for the right to clean water and treaty rights. They are protecting their land and water against heavily militarized police forces.

They are and have been at many Black Lives Matter protests. Girls have fought against police brutality in black communities. Women, in fact, are among the top leaders of that movement.

They are the muslim girls who continue to fearlessly wear their hijabs in public despite rampant islamophobia.

And there were plenty of teenage girls at the women’s marches across the country.

So while a single Katniss Everdeen figure has yet to emerge, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t exist. Because young women are protesting every day. They are the Katnisses and the Laia of Serras and the Aelins and the Mare Barrows and the Nehemia Ytgers and the Lihn Cinders that you’ve all read about. These girls exist.

Realize that the fallacy of most dystopians, and many books, is that they often presents a single cohesive narrative of revolt and change. And in our huge, wide world, that is not how change works. But the books themselves are not incorrect in assuming that young women will be the arbiters of change. They are spot fucking on.

With Wonder Woman’s release we seem to be forgetting that there have been other amazing female role models in the past, so I decided to make a post dedicated to some other bad ass females and awesome role models. Unfortunately, I’m apparently only able to upload ten photos, so I’ll have to leave my fave Disney and Ghibli characters out of this list, maybe I’ll do another one.

Shout out to Maria from The Sound of Music, Veronica from Heathers, B'elanna and Seven of Nine from Star Trek Voyager, Arwen and Tauriel from LOTR/The Hobbit and literally every female from Star Wars (I could do an entire post on them).

And if you have a problem with Elle Woods, fight me. She’s the best role model here.

Someday I’ll explain it to you, why they came, why they won’t ever go away. But I’ll tell you how I survive it. I make a list in my head, of all the good things I’ve seen someone do. Every little thing I can remember. It’s like a game. I do it over and over. Gets a little tedious after all these years, but… there are much worse games to play.
