Body Shot by killians-dimples

Official description: Bartender Killian comes in to the diner where Emma works every night after his shift. On the night Emma has off, she decides to visit him at the bar.

Rated: M  Genre: AU, Romance  Chapters: one-shot

Know what’s hotter than Emma & Killian having sex? Emma & Killian taking body shots off each other THEN having sex. On a table. BK has created one of the steamiest preludes to an actual sex scene I’ve ever read.  It’s hot, and sweaty, and dirty….and yeah. You’ll definitely need a COLD shower after reading this fic. Or, better yet go to your local bar, grab a bottle of Patron, find your very own pirate & pay homage to this fabulous story.

It Seals Your Fate by boyfriendhook

Official description: Thanksgiving isn’t much fun for someone who doesn’t have family to spend it with, Which is exactly why Emma Swan decides to get the hell out of Boston for the holiday.Except maybe that pull has more to do with someone who is waiting for her in the town that’s calling out to her. A mixture of Once Upon a Time mythos and the supernatural creatures that go bump in the night.

Rated: Mature   Genre: Supernatural/Romance, AU   Chapters: 18. Complete.

Hands-down one of the best fanfics I’ve ever read. Period.  I never would have conceived of a paranormal-themed Captain Swan tale where Killian is a werewolf, but not only did Maggie do that, she managed to transform it into one of the most captivating fanfics ever created. Steeped in norse mythology, the huge level of detail and thought gone into creating this story is truly awe-inspiring. As with all Maggie fics, readers are guaranteed some scorchingly hot sex scenes. But this isn’t just any ordinary; run-of-the-mill smut. It’s SPICY, GROWLY, WERE!SEX–something I never knew I wanted until I got it. Maggie is a master at creating atmospheric tension and that general sense of foreboding adds to the overall provocativeness of the piece. So, whatever you’re doing right now. STOP. Go & read this story. You won’t be sorry.

I’ve Got Her (and she’s got me) by emmaofmisthaven

Official description: If there are ‘abort mission’ signs above her head, Neal choses to ignore them. The fool. “You can’t trust him. He’s a… a pirate.”
“Yeah, well, he’s my pirate, so…”

Rated: General Audiences   Genre: Romance/Hurt/Comfort
Chapters: one-shot

This is one of those fics where while I’m reading it, I’m simultaneously screaming at my computer: “WHY DIDN’T THIS REALLY HAPPEN ON THE SHOW?!” It’s just such a perfect encapsulation of EVERYTHING I wanted Emma to say/do/feel during the season three Killian/Emma/Neal love triangle. Killian’s intense vulnerability–my favorite of his many desirable traits–is showcased so effectively in this story. And Emma’s willingness to finally take that leap–to claim him as her own? I FELT LIKE I DIED & WENT TO FANFIC HEAVEN. Also, this story gets MAJOR points for featuring one of my favorite Killian iterations: Killian vs. The Modern World. That whole schtick NEVER gets old.

Once Upon a Happy Ending by colormyheartred

Official description: When everyone goes back to the Enchanted Forest, Emma struggles to find her identity in the land with magic.

Rated: T  Genre: Romance/Drama  Chapters: one-shot

For years, the idea has been bandied about that OUAT will end with the cast returning to the Enchanted Forest permanently. Whenever that theory is discussed, I always have a difficult time picturing what Emma’s role will be there. With no villains to defeat or people to rescue, how will Emma spend her days? The notion of Emma being entertained by affairs at court just doesn’t compute to me. That’s not her character. Then, I read Megan’s wonderful story. Throughout the fic, she demonstrates a deep understanding of Emma’s character and what makes her tick. And for that reason, this tale is such a realistic view of what Emma would likely experience if she decided to remain in the Enchanted Forest. Emma’s a fish-out-of-water in that world and Megan captured that experience, along with her inevitable restlessness, perfectly. Megan’s dedication to remaining true to Emma’s character is why I’m so in love with this story.  And the ending made me desperately wish for a sequel–with multiple chapters!

Pocked Sized Pirate by kat2609

Official description: If you wanted to impersonate a popular pirate, it would be a good idea to get said pirate out of the way. And where better to hide him than a ship in a bottle? A CS one shot written based on “Poor Unfortunate Souls” spoilers.

Rated: General Audiences   Genre: Humor   Chapters: one-shot

If you’re looking for something light & fun, this fic is one of my favorites. It’s a truly hilarious story ripe with witty dialogue and fabulous banter. A tiny, and very indignant Killian, makes for a very entertaining read. Is it wrong that now I kinda want to see a pint-sized Hook onscreen? And a little Captain Charming always makes a story better. ALWAYS.  A fabulously, funny read!

Sweet Dreams Are Made of These
by i-know-how-you-kiss

Official description: Emma can’t stop dreaming about Killian.

Rated: Mature. Genre: Smut  Chapters: one-shot

While two weeks ago, we had smut with a side of rom-com, this time we have smut with a side of swoon-worthy romance. And what’s romantic about it, is that it isn’t all hearts, flowers, and schmoopiness. It’s tough, and frustrating, and …..and real. And the dialogue? IMPECCABLY WRITTEN. This is one of the most accurate Sassy!Regina voices I’ve read.

White Light on a Black Sea by onceuponataarna

Official description: A Captain Swan story with a historical pirate/Black Sails twist. Princess Emma is on her way to her wedding when her ship is attacked by the Jolly Roger. Captured by ruthless pirates and miles from home, she is subject to the mercy of the handsome and dangerous Captain Hook. These aren’t the fairytale pirates you know. Will contain very mature themes. Dark!Hook/Princess Emma

Rated: Explicit  Genre: Dark!Hook/Princess Emma, AU  Chapters: 28/?  WIP.

TRIGGER WARNING: non-con/dub-con stuff. This is an adults-only fic, so expect plenty of profanity, violence and sex (including some prostitution). Warnings will be clear.

Adventure & Sex on the High Seas! If you like a whole lot of fluff in your fanfics,  you might wanna look somewhere else.  This story is dark and gritty. It’s raw and often painful. But, it’s also worth the read. It’s extremely well-crafted and it reads almost like a historical fiction novel. And the dialogue is exquisitely written with particular attention paid to the pirate dialect. It’s an INCREDIBLE page-turner. An absolutely addictive read. My suggestion to you is this: set aside a chunk of time. ‘Cause once you start this story, you’re not gonna want to stop.  Your house could be burning down. And you’ll risk the smoke inhalation just so you can finish the chapter you’re reading. It’s that compelling.

Kathryn Johnston: remember her name. Died at age 92. Survived the Great Depression, two World Wars, Jim Crow, and more. But she couldn’t survive corrupt  and incompetent police. I’ve included information about her shooting below, but if you want the details, with citations, click here. It’s worth it. It’s truly unbelievable. The level of incompetence and corruption is in this story is simply amazing. You know that I try to keep things pretty positive on this blog, there’s so much negativity around the web. But all good people, regardless of your skin color or ethnic or racial background, need to be thoughtful, concerned, and actionable about foolishness like this.

Kathryn Johnston (June 26, 1914 – November 21, 2006)[1] was an elderly Atlanta, Georgia, woman who was shot by undercover police officers in her home on Neal Street in northwest Atlanta on November 21, 2006, where she had lived for 17 years. Three officers had entered her home in what was later described as a ‘botched’ drug raid.[2][3][4] Officers cut off burglar bars and broke down her door using a no-knock warrant.[5] Police said Johnston fired at them and they fired in response; she fired one shot out the door over the officers’ heads and they fired 39 shots, five or six of which hit her.[3][6] None of the officers were injured by her gunfire, but Johnston was killed by the officers. Police injuries were later attributed to “friendly fire” from each other’s weapons.[2][3][6]

One of the officers planted marijuana in Johnston’s house after the shooting.[7][8] Later investigations found that the paperwork stating that drugs present at Johnston’s house, which had been the basis for the raid, had been falsified.[3] The officers later admitted to having lied when they submitted cocaine as evidence claiming that they had bought it at Johnston’s house.[7] Three officers were tried for manslaughter and other charges surrounding falsification and were sentenced to ten, six, and five years.[3]

I lived right behind her & heard all of the gunshots that night. Sounded like a machine gun went off. I remember ducking on the floor with my grandma cause we thought someone was shooting in our driveway. But this 92 year old woman was getting killed on the bullshit tip. I’ll never forget it. I was scared as hell. Police brutality at its worst. I wrote my first letter to a political leader about this particular unjust situation. Here’s a snippet of the story.

Kathryn’s favorites....

I know when I started this whole thing I promised I would only feature 5-7 fanfics each week. I realize that. But I just couldn’t help myself. There were soooo many good stories I read this week. This is actually my edited list. I tried to reduce it to seven fics. I really tried. But I just couldn’t do it. It would’ve been like getting rid of one of my (theoretical) children. So enjoy this super-sized version of Kathryn’s favorites. And as always, please consider leaving kudos, reblogging, liking, or reviewing any fanfics you read. Fanfic authors work so incredibly hard. Let’s show our appreciation.

P.S. For anyone keeping track of this weekend’s FT3 Con who want a little follow-up to Colin’s comments about “Coward” Hook never touching a woman, you might wanna check out amagicalship‘s fic featured below. It’s damn near prophetic. Seriously, go read it.

Across the Sea by thejollypirate

Official description: The unintentional, unpleasant run-in Killian Jones, lead singer and guitarist of The Ruthless Pirates, makes with the blonde stranger who is apparently his manager’s friend doesn’t stop him from starting a special bond with her while he has the chance.

Rated: Teen & up   Genre: Modern AU; Fluff   Chapters: 5/?  WIP.

What I love about this story is that Colin and Killian are so perfectly blended together as to create a sort of third character. Killian 2.0, if you will. You have Colin’s musical background and Irish heritage mixed with Killian’s charm and personality. It’s a unique (and creative) approach to characterization. In regards to the rest of the story, Casey manages to blend poignant emotions with wit and humor. Emma and Killian retain the light-hearted banter that makes their relationship so much fun. I enjoy how Casey’s slowly unveiling Emma’s history. The added mystery only makes the plot more compelling. I can’t wait to read more.

Blood is Running Deep by boyfriendhook

Official description: Six months after the events of “it seals your fate”.

Rated: Teen & up      Genre: AU      Chapters: 1/?  WIP.

When I discovered that a sequel was being written to one of my all-time favorite Captain Swan fanfics I screamed. Literally. My dog actually ran from the room. For me, this was like Jane Austen coming from beyond the grave to release a follow-up to Pride and Prejudice. No joke. I can’t believe we’ve been granted the opportunity to further explore the mysterious and complex universe that Maggie so thoughtfully created in ISYF. And with the birth of Emma and Killian’s hybrid savior miracle baby, I’m excited to see what sort of mythological themes will be unlocked. The addition of some Mary-Margaret/Captain Swan tension also provides another interesting layer that I’m eager to examine. So, what are you waiting for–go start reading. NOW.

Breaking Glass by swaggercaption

Official description: All the air is punched violently from her lungs when his first three words are a question, one eyebrow arched high on his forehead in curiosity, “Who are you?” When the Snow Queen lodges a shard of glass deep in Killian’s heart, how can Emma remind him of who he is when she cannot even remind him who she is?

Rated: T     Genre: Romance/angst     Chapters: 8. Complete.

When we learned that the Snow Queen would be 4A’s Big Bad, I had hoped that Adam & Eddy would use her character as an opportunity to weave that fairy tale’s mythology into an Emma/Killian-centric plot. The set-up was so rich with possibility. Clearly, they decided not to go that route. Thankfully, Tess did and this fic is like all my hopes and dreams for that story arc come to life. Tess has created an intricate, multi-faceted plot, worthy of actually airing on the show. While this story is not fluff and in fact is often heart-wrenchingly painful, it is deeply romantic. Tess has skillfully used the Snow Queen storyline as a vehicle to explore Emma’s feelings for Killian. And boy, is that beautiful to behold. Tess’ masterful use of imagery and ability to induce emotion has resulted in a spellbinding tale that is impossible to put down.

Holding On and Letting Go by colinschest

Official description: First comes love, then comes marriage. It’s the baby in the baby carriage that changes it all.

Rated: Explicit      Genre: Heavy angst    Chapters: 2/?  WIP.

This story is a sequel to the AMAZING A Little Too Much of That Poison, Baby. So for maximum impact, you may want to read (or re-read) that masterpiece before embarking on Grace’s latest gem. Last week, we had happy, fluffy, schmoopy baby fic. This tale is on the complete OPPOSITE end of the spectrum. Be prepared. But oh, does Grace make it hurt so good. Emma has baggage. She has demons and a difficult past to contend with, but that’s what makes this story so utterly fascinating. Read it. NOW.

TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of Emma’s previous miscarriage and pregnancy-related struggles.

Make You Mine by amagicalship

Official description:  In which they have an extra day to return to the Enchanted Forest, allowing them to stop overnight. Emma knows this isn’t the same Killian she’s used to, but tonight she just needs to be in his arms. (In this story, we’re assuming they’ve already made love as much as possible back in Storybrooke.)

Rated: M        Genre: Romance      Chapters: 3. Complete.

When we learned that the season finale would feature Deckhand Killian, I had a not-so-secret desire to see the newly-transformed sweet & innocent young man seduced and corrupted by Emma’s feminine wiles. Unfortunately, my hopes for that particular storyline were dashed in the season finale. But boy does Carrie deliver in this fic. And then some. It’s a seriously HOT three chapter tale, peppered with humor. Definitely NSFW. So yeah….go read it. But do so alone. Trust me.

More Than A Memory by ive-always-been-a-pirate

Official description: He didn’t remember much - and he didn’t remember her. The accident changed their lives and sent Emma into a tailspin, desperately waiting for Killian to come back to her. But when he finally wakes up from his coma, the past six years are gone. Despite him having no recollection of their love, a broken yet determined Emma refuses to give up on them. She’s got her work cut out for her, but some memories are definitely worth fighting for.

Rated: Mature   Genre: Modern AU, Fluff/Angst/Smut   Chapters: 25/?  WIP

I don’t know if I’ve ever been more emotionally confused when reading a fanfic. I cried, I squeed, I laughed, I sighed–sometimes all four at the same time. Quite a feat, I know. That’s how multi-faceted and layered this story is. Naturally, this fic has plenty of angst. It really can’t be avoided given the subject matter. But moments like Killian “meeting” his son for the first time are so emotionally impactful that it’s worth enduring the pain. And witnessing Killian and Emma falling in love not once, but twice in one story? Breathtaking. Morgan is particularly skilled at incorporating meta into her writing to hilarious result. Liam and Killian’s ardent debate over Captain Hook’s wardrobe choices had me in stitches. I also enjoyed the echoes of Daddy Charming I saw in an overprotective David Nolan. Really, I can’t say enough good things about this story. It’s truly magnificent.

Storybook by vickyvicarious

Official description: Sixteen-year-old Emma wakes up over 300 years in the past, in a world where magic exists.

Rated: T  Genre: AU, Lieutenant Duckling. Chapters: 2. Complete.

Once Upon a Time, Mary Margaret Blanchard informed Emma: “I wanted Henry to have the most important thing anyone can have. Hope. Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a very powerful thing.” Hope has always been a central theme on OUAT and in essence, it’s what this fic is about. Finding hope–even in the most dire of circumstances. And that’s why I love this story so much.  Utilizing a Lieutenant Duckling flashback, Vicky does a remarkable job of meditating on OUAT’s favorite motif. She perfectly captures the voice of a world-weary, sixteen-year-old Emma and a gallant Lieutenant Jones. And uses the flashback; contrasted with season 3 OUAT; to elucidate the topic. Vicky’s a wonderful writer and her rich use of imagery only improves the reader’s experience. And lemme repeat: LIEUTENANT DUCKLING! Who doesn’t love a Lieutenant Duckling tale?!

To the Ends of the Earth
by thesassywitchofthenortheasteuphoric-melancholyy

Official description: Picking up in the aftermath of the season 4 finale, everyone must grieve and find Emma.

Rated: Not rated  Genre: None listed.  Chapters: 5/? WIP

This is an absolutely brilliant; wholly addicting piece. As expected, given the season finale, it’s unbelievably heart-wrenching. Killian’s anguish at losing Emma is felt throughout every paragraph. It hurts, I’m not gonna lie. It’s painful. But the authors do such a remarkable job of showcasing his torment. The dialogue and character voices are perfectly portrayed. And I LOVE how Alex and Sara are incorporating greek mythology into the Once universe. Another highlight is Killian’s growing bond with the Charmings. The story skillfully demonstrates how he’s slowly integrating into the Charming family. I love that even without Emma, he still has people in Storybrooke who care for him. An actual family.

Today’s Memory by mryddinwilt

Official description: When Emma and Elsa defeat the Snow Queen they are turned into children and lose their memories. Two magically gifted children is a challenge even for Storybrooke, especially when one develops a crush on a certain pirate.

Rated: T   Genre: Humor/Family  Chapters: 13. Complete.

If you’re interested in fluff, have I got a tale for you! This story is so full of FEELS, it’s practically bursting at the seams. I still can’t decide what is more touching: Killian fully grasping how abandoned a young, orphaned Emma felt or Snow & David finally getting to experience Emma’s lost childhood. I’ve always been a HUGE fan of The Charming Family and I live for their bonding moments, so this fic proved especially heartwarming. I also appreciate that all the mushy-gushy feels stuff is nicely balanced with a healthy dose of humor. It prevents the story from becoming overly saccharine. Another high point: Captain Charming who play off each other especially nicely in this story. And young Emma’s adoration of Killian just KILLS ME.

#NOMORESILENCE: Remembering & Honoring Those Killed By Police Brutality in America: Kathryn Johnston

One of the officers planted marijuana in Johnston’s house after the shooting.[7][8] Later investigations found that the paperwork stating that drugs present at Johnston’s house, which had been the basis for the raid, had been falsified.[3]The officers later admitted to having lied when they submitted cocaine as evidence claiming that they had bought it at Johnston’s house.[7] Three officers were tried for manslaughter and other charges surrounding falsification and were sentenced to ten, six, and five years.[3]

The officers, dressed in plainclothes, approached the house at about seven in the evening.[9] Officers Jason R. Smith, Gregg Junnier, and Arthur Tesler, who were wearing bulletproof vests and carrying riot shields when they entered the home,[10] announced themselves after opening the door but before entering the house, according to police.[11] Johnston fired a gun after police forced open the door.[9] It was later determined that Johnston fired one shot from an old pistol, and that none of the officers were hit by that bullet.[12] The police officers fired a total of 39 shots, five or six of which hit Johnston.[13] Police injuries sustained in the raid were from bullets not fired from Johnston’s gun.[14] The officers were hit in the arm, thigh, and shoulder respectively; they were treated at a hospital.[9]

Prosecutors later said that Smith handcuffed Johnston as she was dying.[15] Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.[16] Prosecutors accused one of the officers of planting three bags of marijuana in the house as an attempted cover-up after no drugs were found in the house.[4] Smith later admitted to having planted the drugs.[3][6] They had been found in an unrelated case earlier that day.[7] Prosecutors also accused Smith of calling Alex White after the shooting and telling the informant to say he had bought crack cocaine at Johnston’s house.[15] According to court filings, before talking to the homicide detective, the three officers involved in the shooting got together to get their stories straight.[7]

Johnston lived alone and had lived in that house for about 17 years.[9][17] Her house was in a crime-ridden neighborhood in west Atlanta.[15] People in the neighborhood speculated that the police had the wrong person, but police denied that they had the wrong house.[9] Neighbors and family said that Johnston kept a “rusty revolver” for self-defense; another elderly woman in her neighborhood had recently been raped, and drug dealing was common.[11] In the year before her death, Johnston had installed extra locks and burglar bars.[18]

The officers involved in the shooting testified that they had been under pressure to meet performance requirements of the APD, which led them to lie and falsify evidence, and that they had been inadequately trained.[29] Police Chief Pennington denied the existence of quotas in the APD, but acknowledged the existence of “performance measures because if we don’t have them, the officers would come in every day with nothing on their sheets.”[29]

Other arrests by the discredited officers which led to convictions have come under review.[32] The District Attorney for Fulton County announced that it was reviewing at least 100 cases in which the ex-officers had been involved earlier, as well as other cases with different officers who may have used similar tactics.[7] In June 2007, one man who was serving prison time on drug charges based on testimony from Junnier and Smith was the first of these cases to be released from prison.[32]

Johnston’s shooting, along with several others, brought police use of deadly force under increased scrutiny.[20] A week after the shooting, over 200 people held a rally in Johnston’s neighborhood to demand answers to questions surrounding the shooting.[20] The shooting was highlighted by civil rights activists as an example of the police department’s poor treatment of people living in low-income neighborhoods.[15]

In reference to this case, Gregory Jones, the Special Agent in Charge of the Atlanta FBI, said, “Few crimes are as reprehensible as those committed by police officers who violate the very laws they have sworn to uphold.”[33]

We remember your life, Kathryn Johnston, and we #SayHerName #BlackLivesMatter
