katara would be like

anonymous asked:

Zutarians act like Katara's romance with Aang is to the detriment of her character but somehow one with Zuko wouldn't just put her in nurturing position for an older man. I am not for Kataang but I don't think any of the show's characters would NOT put Katara in the position of a nurturer and giver. She gives too much as it is. Except perhaps Toph but Toph is twelve, confused and has parental issues. What I'm trying to ask is what does Katara gain from Zutara except acceptance.

What Katara Would Gain from Zutara

[Edited to add “Bato of the Water Tribe”! Thanks, @ adifferentcupofzutara!]

Katara would gain a partner who would help her with household duties without being asked:

Rather than someone who leaves the chores to her while he shows off for his fangirls.

Katara: Watching you show off for a bunch of girls does not sound like fun.
Aαng: Well, neither does carrying your basket.

She would gain a partner who shares parental responsibilities …

Katara: Aαng, don’t walk away from this.

Zuko: Let him go. He needs time to sort it out by himself.

And acts like a father:

Zuko: Keep in mind, these are dual swords. Two halves of a single weapon. Don’t think of them as separate, because they’re not. They’re just two different parts of the same whole.

Rather than someone who IS a parental responsibility …

And acts like her son.

Katara: What do you think, Aαng? Do I act like a mom?
Aαng: Well, I…
Katara: Stop rubbing your eye and speak clearly when you talk!

Katara: My goodness! That doesn’t sound like our Kuzon.

Katara: I’ve been training Aαng for a while now. He really responds well to a positive teaching experience. Lots of encouragement and praise. Kind words. If he’s doing something wrong, maybe a gentle nudge in the right direction.

She would gain a partner who respects her personal boundaries:

Katara: What are you doing?!
Zuko: Keeping rocks from crushing you.
Katara: Okay, I’m not crushed. You can get off me now.

Zuko [retracts his arm so Katara can move away from him]: I’ll take that as a thank you.

Rather than someone who transgresses them.

Katara: Aαng, I’m sorry but right now,  I’m just a little confused.

Katara: I just said that I was confused!

Someone who sees her as an ally:

Zuko: I can handle Azula.
Iroh: Not alone. You’ll need help.
Zuko: You’re right. Katara, how would you like to help me put Azula in her place?

And not a possession.

Actor Zuko: Wait.  I thought you were the Avatar’s girl.

Aαng: [nods]

Someone who waits for the right time to talk:

Katara: You look terrible.
Zuko: I waited out here all night.

Rather than pushing her:

Katara: Because we’re in the middle of a war and we have other things to worry about. This isn’t the right time.
Aαng:  Well, when IS the right time?

Someone who understands how much she needs her family to be there …

Katara: Dad.
Hakoda: Hi, Katara.
Katara: How are you here? What is going on?

And puts their needs over his:

Sokka: No, I’m staying. You guys go. You’ve been here long enough.
Suki: I’m not leaving without you, Sokka.
Zuko: I’m staying too.

Rather than someone who disappears when she depends on him …

Katara: He left.
Hakoda: What?
Katara: Aαng. He just took his glider and disappeared. He has this ridiculous notion that he has to save the world alone. That it’s all his responsibility.
Hakoda: Maybe that’s his way of being brave.
Katara: It’s not brave. It’s selfish and stupid. We could be helping him. And I know the world needs him, but doesn’t he know how much that we need him too? How could he just leave us behind?

And puts his needs over theirs.

Sokka: This is the map to our father! You had it the whole time!? How could you?

She would not only gain a partner who, unlike her canon love interest, sympathizes with the loss of her mother:

Katara: Well, I just want you to be prepared for what you might see. The Fire Nation is ruthless. They killed my mother and they could have done the same to your people.
Aαng:  Just because no one has seen an airbender doesn’t mean the Fire Nation killed them all. They probably escaped.
Katara: I know it’s hard to accept.
Aαng: You don’t understand, Katara. The only way to get to an airbender temple is on a flying bison, and I doubt the Fire Nation has any flying bison. Right, Appa?

Katara: I don’t?! How dare you! You have no idea what this war has put me through. Me personally. The Fire Nation took my mother away from me.

Zuko: I’m sorry. That’s something we have in common.

Katara: But, we were too late. When we got there, the man was gone.  And so was she.
Zuko: Your Mother was a brave woman.

Katara:  I know.

But who trusts her to deal with anger and pain in HER way …

Rather than pestering her to do things HIS way.

Aαng: Katara, you sound like Jet.

Aαng: Katara, you do have a choice. Forgiveness.

Aαng: It’s okay, because I forgive you.  That give you any ideas?

Aαng: Let your anger out and then let it go. Forgive him.

Aαng: You did the right thing. Forgiveness is the first step you have to take to begin healing.

Ironically, a partner who understands that some things are more important than romance!

Aαng: Katara is in danger! I have to go.

Guru Pathik: No, Aαng! By choosing attachment, you have locked the chakra! If you leave now you won’t be able to go into the Avatar State at all!

Zuko: Stop! This isn’t about you. This is about the Fire Nation.

But who would still die for her in a heartbeat …

Rather than risk her life (and everyone’s) to retain his moral purity.

Most of all, she would gain someone who sees her for who she is:

Rather than who he wants her to be.

And who doesn’t try to change her to make her better for him.

Does someone else also think about the fact that after Aang literally got ambushed and killed by the Fire Nation, then spent weeks in a coma, and instead of being afraid, or tapping out–again, because he DIED–his first action even before he can muster the energy to hardly stand, is to charge headfirst back into the Fire Nation?

It sort of hits hard sometimes.

are you ever in the shower and your heart starts crying because Katara was Aang’s first everything romantically?

First crush
First kiss
First love
First wife
First ahem
First baby momma
First person he said good morning to

and then your weeping heart sobs, “What about the lasts tho?”

Last person he’d kiss before a long day
Last person he said good night to
Last person he said goodbye to

AND THEN YOUR HEART SAYS, “Stop right there!… Do you think he thanked her at the end?”

Oh, you mean like thanks for loving me, thanks for being born 100 years later and then freeing me so we could meet, thanks for believing in an Avatar and then believing in me, thanks for giving me a new family and then our own little family, just all around, “Thank you, Katara.”

… No? Just me? Just my heart interrupting my shower time? Iight fam

In the first season, I recall that whole subplot of Zuko having Katara's necklace for a bit and now I'm wondering if Book 4 would have called back to that somehow with the development of Zuko and Katara having a romance.

I can see something like that. It would be funny if they were visiting the Water Tribe, and Master Pakku made a comment about how he just so happened to find that necklace on the ground. And how it was a sign that he would finally be with the love of his life. And Zuko has a weird moment of recognition on his face of the same thing happening to him.

It makes me wonder what Zuko was thinking when he found it. He knew that it was Katara’s but since it is a betrothal necklace he might have assumed that she was engaged. That is what Yugoda thought. And maybe that was why he thought it was important enough to get Katara to tell him where the Avatar was. He wouldn’t have known it was important because of her mother. But she does say that it was her mother’s when he showed it to her.

Then in the cave she tells him that her mother was killed by the Fire Nation. He probably remembered how he used the necklace at that point and felt really bad because it belonged to her dead mother.

atla ladies + @closetedsapphicopinions posts

aka an au where they’re all gay what do you mean that’s not canon

You know, I do like the idea of kataraxzuko because, if they went with it that would have shown just how the world was changing. I feel that in some ways, zuko and katara did help each other to find peace and closure, and they were both on the same level mental and maturity wise.

And like, I think that Zuko would have done A LOT to make up for what the firenation did to the water tribe if his wife was of the water tribe. And that would have shown true progression. Not saying that Zuko wasn’t progressed or humbled, but I mean, we know that he feels guilty for the treatment of the water tribe, and I think he’d do all he can to give them rights and repay them, even if that meant integrating some of them into the fire nation.

And I’m pretty sure many of Katara’s people would follow her into the fire nation as well, and she could establish some rule and class along side Zuko, whom I believe would treat her equally because given he is fire nation, they are pretty much advocates for gender equality (more so now given the changing time).

And I think making two of the  main characters, who are from different and opposing cultures get together to try and ease all the tension and stuff that the 100rd year war brought would be efficient and would send a good message.

And just bcs she’s queen of the fire nation doesn’t mean she’d drop her water tribe culture. I think Zuko would try to preserve that, and would make sure that the fire nation never stepped on the water tribe culture again.

And it would be every empowering for a woman like Katara, to be in such a very high position but treated equally and held in reverence by the people who once opposed she and her people.

Like I am a little upset that there was a possibility zuko x katara could have been canon.

And it would have been made canon in a way where it wasn’t cliché at all.

anonymous asked:

So if we got Aaron Ehasz's Book 4, would Katara be the Fire Lady with Zuko who is Fire Lord, or would she wait a little later to accept that role, also how would Aang feel about Zuko and Katara's relationship, I personally would feel sorry for Aang he had a huge crush on her but she ended up with Zuko, I love Aang he's one of my fav characters but I don't like Kataang and found it forced and I loved Zutara, how do you think Aang would get over it? Would he be angry at Zuko?

I don’t think Katara would be the Firelady until many years later. I think Book 4 would be the budding of Zuko and Katara’s romance, but I don’t think they’d be officially a couple or anything.

I don’t think Aang would necessarily be angry at Zuko, but he would struggle with his conflicted feelings. Aang would feel like he “deserves” Katara more. He’s been her friend for the entire time while Zuko was attacking them. Zuko used her necklace, while Aang retrieved it. Part of him would feel resentful that Katara would develop feelings for Zuko while Aang has been sort of been there for her longer. It would show that Aang is human and flawed. This kind of inner conflict would have made Aang more relatable as a character for me.

Also, if it weren’t for Aang, Zuko wouldn’t even be alive. Aang’s mercy and compassion while Zuko was trying to capture him let Zuko survive. So I’m sure that a part of him would feel upset that Zuko now is “taking” the girl he likes when Zuko kind of owes Aang his life. It would be easy to sympathize with Aang for feeling that way, and I think it would have been great character development.

Aang’s attachment even prevented him from unlocking his chakra. It would be difficult for him to let go of his crush, but I think it would have made him a better character. I think him wanting happiness for Zuko and Katara would be the perfect conclusion for Aang’s character arc. That is what the Crown Chakra is all about. Letting go of attachment means wanting the best for others without expecting anything in return.

Finding the Air Nomads would have been the perfect opportunity to help Aang finally let go. He would be so grateful that his people survived that it would give him a new perspective on life. Katara has done so much for him to fill the void that the Air Nomads left, and he would simply want her to be happy, even if she ended up with Zuko. Aang would have grown into a fully realized Avatar who has learned what true love is. Letting his former enemy be with the girl he liked would show how much he has grown spiritually.

I’ve probably brought this up before but I am again because why not

This scene is really important, and I think it’s going to come back up again sometime in North and South. They wouldn’t just write this scene in for no reason (especially because it’s in Smoke and Shadow, in which Katara and Sokka were not in at all after this scene, so there would be no reason to give Katara a dramatic scene like this if it wasn’t going to come back again)

This is the moment I think when it fully hits them that this is going to be happening so often in their future. Of course, for a while, Katara will probably be able to accompany Aang on most of his Avatar-related trips. But once they get married and have children, who will have school (and assuming Katara got some sort of job teaching waterbending or something in Republic City. That’s my headcanon anyway), she won’t be able to go with him. That he’ll be leaving her and the kids a lot…

Whether it’s only a small scene between them, or it turns out to be some sort of conflict for them to overcome through the course of N&S, I think it’s safe to say they aren’t quite done with this conversation yet.

anonymous asked:

What are your head-canons of Zuko and Katara's parenting styles? To me I always think of Zuko as this super chill dad who lets their kids do whatever they want mostly like letting them stay up past their bed times and hang out with him, stuff like that, then Katara would get mad at him for doing this and stuff ahhhh I love it 😍😍

I have a couple of ideas of how they would parent, and I honestly think they’d both be fairly similar:

Katara would be more wiling to discipline the children, given she had a proper example of what discipline should look like.

Zuko, however, won’t allow any type of corporal punishment, not even a swat on the hand, because of how corporal punishment traumatized him as a kid.

Katara is super supportive of this, because she wants him to feel confident in his parenting style, so they compromise with things like early bedtimes if the kids are naughty, or taking away their favorite toy for the day. When the kids get older, they get grounded for a couple days or so.

I see both of them wanting to spend every waking moment with their kids, reading to them, and teaching them about bending and martial arts and the world’s history. Zuko probably makes up long-winded bedtime stories and Katara probably stands in the doorway with her arms crossed, but she’s smiling at him.

Lots of family vacations to the beach

Lots of rides around on Druk

Lots of baked sweets by the turtleduck pond

I feel like Zuko would be as excited as puppy dog every time Katara tells him she’s pregnant, until maybe the 4th time she tells him and he’s like OH MY GOD WOMAN I AM A 35 YR OLD MAN I CAN’T DO THIS AGAIN (yes i can)

Katara just reminds me of the kind of mom who sees her kid doing something he’s not supposed to be doing and she’s like “don’t do it, ezra,” while pulling out a camera (let’s pretend they have them) and video taping the whole scene.

Zuko woud be the parent who runs over immediately and rescues the child and then launches into a big speech about the dangers of trying to climb trees or something.

I think both parents would stuff a sleeping kid (while it’s a baby) inside their robes and sneak them into meetings. Then, like halfway through said meeting, you hear a baby cooing and Zuko/Katara is looking down their robes and making eyes at whatever is in there.

Zuko lets the kids sneak turtleducks into their beds.

Katara raises an eyebrow disapprovingly.

Both parents wake up everyday and wonder how the hell they ended up with four kids, and every night, they get super sad because time just keeps going by way too fast.

I feel like the two most hilarious things of the ZukoKatara as Rhaegar and Lyanna au is:

  1. Only Katara and Zuko could have a kid as hopeful, angsty, and dramatic as Jon Snow. I keep joking that eventually I’ll discover that “Jon” actually means “Hope,” thus completing the circle.
  2. The implication that Zuko woed Katara with his singing. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Dante Basco has a nice voice but, realistically speaking, I think it’s more likely that Zuko would fall in love with Katara’s voice (or whomever I feel like shipping him with I guess…although, that implies I’d picture him falling in love with Sokka’s singing…which is even MORE hilarious).

Sorry, I was just thinking about things, and I always find these two things hilarious.

steambend  asked:

what's your opinion of a zutara book 4 then? i think ehasz wanted their relationship to be subtle, but how do you think it would have played out?

I definitely think it would have been very slow and subtle. Both Zuko and Katara had very little experience with relationships and dating. Most of the males in Katara’s village had left for the war and her first real interest in a boy seemed to come with Jet. Her infatuation was very innocent and naive. Zuko apparently experienced his first real interaction with a girl on his date with Jin. It was terribly awkward and he had a very difficult time knowing how to handle himself. Both of them would be very shy and slow to begin a relationship, since they are very young and inexperienced.

That is why Kataang and Maiko are so out-of-character. Bryke paint Zutara as a relationship that is only about kissing, but honestly the kissing in Book 3 turned me off. Katara would not jump straight into a relationship by making out, especially if she was not able to communicate with Aang about her feelings beforehand. And Zuko would never be comfortable dating a girl, let alone making out, unless he completely trusted her. That would take a very long time for him, considering his upbringing. He would never be so physical with a girl who shut down his feelings. I definitely would not want Zuko and Katara’s romance to focus on kissing. I would want the focus to be on them getting to know each other and building up their friendship.

After the war, Katara would probably spend a lot of time at the palace. As the new Firelord, I think Zuko would want the Gaang to feel pampered after their long journey, and Katara would definitely enjoy the luxuries of the palace. They’ve all been roughing it since Ba Sing Se, so Katara would be happy to get some needed rest and relaxation, instead of doing the chores and taking care of everyone. Other than Iroh, Zuko doesn’t really have anyone at the palace that he can talk to, so this would allow Katara time to get to know Zuko better.

Eventually Zuko would mention that his mother may possibly be alive. Katara would be interested in learning about Ursa, since she was so much like Kanna. They’d probably have some conversations by the turtle duck pond, and maybe Zuko would even show Katara the old beach house that his family used to visit. She would learn about his childhood and the Fire Nation Royal Family and how dysfunctional it was. Katara would offer to support Zuko in his efforts to look for his mother, since she feels bad that he has so many duties that prevent him from having much free time. Zuko would feel grateful that she wants to support him, and he wants to help her, too. So he offers to accompany Katara on a trip to the Southern Water Tribe.

Zuko would also learn about Katara’s life growing up. She would tell him how the war tore her family apart, and how the South was devastated by the Fire Nation’s attacks. She had to grow up so fast, and practically became Sokka’s mom. She might even show him the boat from the very first episode. Zuko would promise to help her restore her village and they would become political partners. During this period of time at the South Pole, Zuko would be able to meet Gran Gran and maybe even Bato, and also get to know Hakoda better.

I’m sure they would also visit the Northern Water Tribe, too. Maybe Iroh could even go with them. Perhaps a visit to the North would have played into Iroh’s flashback about Lu Ten. Koh and Iroh’s trip to the Spirit World were both mentioned in The Siege of the North episodes, and there may have been a connection intended for the future. Zuko could get to know Pakku, since he’s also a White Lotus member like Iroh. Pakku has a lot of respect for Katara and he is married to Gran Gran now, and they would all work together to help rebuild the South. All of this would help establish a partnership between Firelord Zuko and the Water Tribes.

I think Zuko and Katara’s relationship would be similar to Sokka and Yue’s, which also mainly happened in The Siege of the North episodes, written by Ehasz. A royal with a lot of duties slowly developing feelings for a commoner. I think both Zuko and Katara would feel wary about their feelings at first, because of his status. They would be confused about whether it could work, but they would continuously grow closer. Eventually they would see that it’s okay to do what they want and that Zuko doesn’t need to be a traditional Firelord. They would be able to change the world for the better by doing things in a new way.

I liked the romance in Avatar before Book 3 because it mainly focused on the characters getting to know each other and it was innocent and sweet. There was a lack of soap opera drama and the kissing did not feel excessive. And in The Crossroads of Destiny, that is how Katara and Zuko interacted as well. They had a tender moment and I think that was supposed to be the blueprint for their Book 4 romance…if it had been allowed to happen.

anonymous asked:

if you had to pick one of them, who do you think would be more likely to cheat: zuko or Katara?

I know this seems like a cop-out answer, but honest to god I don’t think either of them would, which is a big reason why I hate the trope that one of the canon Kataang kids is secretly Zuko’s, or fanfics where they have an affair with each other through adulthood.

To start with Zuko: Honor is one of the KEY traits that drives his character, so much so it’s a running joke in the fandom and somewhat in the show. And while you could argue that his loyalty meter for people he loves is… not great (While I personally would like to call BS on the s2 finale, I can’t, it’s there) I would say even with that he feels a strong loyalty to family and close friends.

HOWEVER, there is no doubt in my mind that his biggest loyalty is to the Fire Nation, completely and wholly. So much so that (unpopular opinion among a lot) I don’t think Zuko would sleep with anyone outside of marriage. To risk a bastard/illegitimate kid is something I can’t in any way imagine him doing. He would try to be the perfect Fire Lord with the perfect family. He’d love his children, and he’d do everything in his power to love his wife (assuming it was something arranged. If not, he’d love his wife unconditionally to the end, EVEN if it was Mai.)

“Okay but all throughout history kings have had TONS of illegitimate kids and concubines!!”

Can you honest to god, no questions asked, see Zuko, the guy who was so awkward around girls that he believed Jin was an enemy spy, and then later BOLTED when she kissed him, who became insanely jealous over the idea of Mai with someone else, who was absolutely mortified at the idea that he and Katara were together, having an affair, or even just sleep around when not committed?

People like to mischaracterize Zuko as some bad boy womanizer who knows exactly how to please and woo women, but he’s literally a bumbling idiot around women who is fiercely loyal and loving to his partners.

For Katara: Katara is a very selfless character, and unlike Zuko, I don’t think anyone can call into question her loyalty. She is insanely trusting of everyone, even people she’s perceived to be enemies (@the crystal catacombs) and she’s not afraid to put her heart on the line. Through every turn in her relationship with Aang, she has sacrificed her happiness to make sure he is okay, whether it’s reassuring him that he’s done nothing wrong, to avoiding talking to him about the kiss because she doesn’t want to turn him down, to risking her own safety in order to pull him out of the Avatar State.

Going on the assumption that she marries Aang, and the assumption that she’s totally unhappy in the relationship (which you know, I really don’t like Kataang, but I also don’t think she would be. Yes I know her character is completely butchered and reduced in the comics and LoK, yes it’s completely out of character for her to just sit back and be ‘Aang’s girlfriend’. But he would also love her unconditionally and if she truly believes he’s her destiny and that there wasn’t anything better for her than an absent husband and father who did love her, then I think overall she would learn to love him like that and be happy) she would NEVER act on that misery. She would let it all fester inside. She avoids confrontation with Aang like the plague and would never do anything that could possibly upset him. An affair would KILL Aang and Katara would never DREAM of doing something like that to him, even if she really did love him.

Assuming she marries someone else, whether it’s Zuko, Jet, Haru, or what have you, she’d never let her relationship with them get to the point where she’d consider having an affair. With everyone else in the show, Katara has no issue speaking her mind in order to resolve conflict. If she and her partner were having issues, Katara would sit them down and make sure it got figured out and not leave until the problem was solved. And even then, like I stated earlier, Katara’s loyalty can’t be questioned. Cheating is the ultimate betrayal in a relationship, and there’s no way she’d do that, not in my mind.

So, yeah. Sorry because this probably wasn’t the answer you wanted, but this is my honest opinion.

If Varrick was n ATLA...

Hey, so a while back, me and @imperialfire created an au where Varrick is in ATLA, and it took me ages to get this out because I couldn’t quite get it to work as a brief, bulleted list but, I’m going to take a crack at it again.

  • One original difficulty was that a opportunist like Varrick would most certainly find himself working for the Fire Nation, since that’s where all the money is
  • Varrick is the son of a Water Tribe opportunist who moved to the colonies
  • Zhu Li is from the colonies, and is the result of a mixed marriage
  • Before we changed Varrick’s age, we already figured that Katara and Sokka would probably not like Varrick (well, adult, pre-proper au Varrick), even though Sokka and Varrick would otherwise get along since they’re both great with inventions, and Aang would dislike him too, although maybe not as much as Katara and Sokka
  • However, Aang would probably be curious about Varrick’s inventions at first
  • Varrick would probably at one point monologue about his antics as  a devoted opportunist
  • Ssome facial hair stuf that really needs the original log to be properly appreciated:
    • @imperialfire:“he has that weird ‘”im 13 years old and I want to grow my facial hair to be manly” moustache fuzz.”
    • @avatarsymbolism: He can form a club with Haru!
    • @imperialfire:  And imagine them comparing facial hair
    • @avatarsymbolism: meanwhile sokka’s getting jealous and saying he can TOTALLY grow mustache if he wanted to.but Katara’s like “you mean that peach fuzz on your upper life that you shave off everyday”
    • @imperialfire:  and he tries to grow one but Katara keeps on scolding him for looking ridiculous
    • @avatarsymbolism:  everyone laughsimperialfireAnd toph makes wise cracking jokes
  • Varrick sometimes goes on about his old ostrich-horse, which, by the way, is why he turned against his father in the first plac. And, because only the chat log can do this justice:
    • @imperialfire: That memory makes him turn to good side
    • @avatarsymbolism:  and varrick proudly flaunts that fact even when zuko joins them.
@avatarsymbolism: because he’s varrick damn it!he hears zuko tell his story one day and he copies it almost word for word
    • @imperialfire: OMG
    • @avatarsymbolism: but what actually happened is way more bland–but we never hear that story
    • @avatarsymbolism: so i went up to my father and demanded to know how he could take my ostrich horse away from meand zuko just stares at himand varrick insists that zukoman I am having way too much fun with this. love it!
    • @imperialfire:  Varrick: "And then my father burned a quarter of my face off and banished me from the vilage”
    • @avatarsymbolism: and varrick always insists that zuko is rtrying to copy him
    • @imperialfire: Then he claims a faint mark on his face is a scar
    • @avatarsymbolism: that is SO very Varrickand Zuko is just ._. “Seriously, stop stealing my storythen the ember island players roles around, and varrick is miffed that they gave zuko HIS story
    • @imperialfire: He sneaks into the back of the play to speak with the performers
    • @avatarsymbolism:  "Then Katara offered to heal my scar.” “No I didn’t.”“look Katara I’m sorry i betrayed you but denying it happened won’t slve anythingZuko and katara: …
    • @imperialfire: and then Varrick starts crying about betraying his uncle
    • @avatarsymbolism: XD"Varrick, would you QUIT stealing my story!?”
    • @avatarsymbolism: zuko storms off and varrick continues to be dramatic
    • @imperialfire
    • imperialfire: And then Azula comes into the picture and Varricks like, “ZHU LI DO THE THING"and they dip
  • Dangerous Ladies things:
    • @avatarsymbolism: o, imagine zhu li v mai or azula
    • @imperialfire: Now that’s a site to behold!I don’t even know how that would end
    • @avatarsymbolism: avatar seems to have a thing for interesting, usually monotone ladies who love their boyfriends more than they fear dictators
    • @imperialfire: *insert mai betraying Azula quote here*
    • @avatarsymbolism: i also love how we get TWO episodes where someone has to rescue someone else from prison, and THAT’s the episode where we see the monotone lady betraying the dicator
    • @imperialfire Bryke just loves that trope

idk if this has been asked yet but if you have the inclination, what would be your ideal zutara progression in a hypothetical book 4 for the original series? like if it was all under your direction, how would zutara develop in a fourth, 20ish episode season? bonus points for describing the season/series finale

you know what, i’ve never been asked this. so thank you, i’ve been wanting to answer for so long!

first of all, i would change the season 3 finale. i like zutara’s progression in season 3, i think was very natural for a 14/15 year old girl and 16/17 year old boy. i’d completely erase that scene where m@i comes in and threatens zuko to never break up with her again because **what the fuck**. instead, it’d still be zuko struggling to get his tunic on, maybe a little bit painfully and katara would walk in scolding him with words like, “zuko! you shouldn’t be doing this on your own, you’re hurt.” and then cue a mini healing session (katara blushes, but not as deeply as zuko does). he would express his appreciation for everything she’d done for him over the past couple of months and she would convince him to let her stay and oversee his recovery “just while the wound’s still fresh.” bullshit katara, we all know why you actually want to stay

i’d keep the end scene with them at iroh’s tea place exactly the same, except without the k@taang kiss obviously. i’d replace that with a kind, but firm talk between a@ng and katara about how she didn’t appreciate him kissing her in the ember island players episode when she explicitly asked him not to and letting him know that while she loved him dearly, she didn’t think it would ever be in a romantic way. a@ng would be upset at first, for sure, but part of his season 4 development would be learning to accept this and also maturing as a person and learning to be empathetic of other people’s situations and so on

look, my friend, i am a sucker for slowburn. all of my ships somehow manage to be slowburn (and as an avid bellarke shipper, i am very much dead thanks for asking). so sue me for wanting zutara’s romantic relationship to establish slowly. they’re only young after all

the first couple of episodes would be katara helping in med and acting as a impromptu southern water tribe ambassador while the world is sorting itself out and slowly healing. zuko would be learning the basics of being the firelord. all that essential stuff that would come from ending a 100 year war would take place. season 3 has already established that zuko and katara have a strong bond, and are beneficial friends. i doubt they’d do anything but make time to regularly see each other outside of meetings and whatnot. zuko would make sure that no matter how busy his day was, he’d reserve time for afternoon tea with katara (and sometimes iroh, although i vehemently believe iroh ships his nephew with katara and so he’d always come up with ridiculous excuses as to why he couldn’t come so that they could be alone)

they’d talk about everything and nothing and eventually, maybe three episodes in he’d finally tell katara about his visit to the prison to see ozai and how his mother is possibly still alive. after much discussion and planning, zuko would decide to go look for her and katara would not let him go without her, insisting it’ll be just like old times and reminding him how he helped her when she was seeking closure for her mother

and this’ll be where the meat comes in. now, like i said, at first it’d be slow. things like brushing hands, zuko helping katara untangle her hair, katara comforting zuko whenever their search led to dead ends and stuff. it’d slowly become more affectionate; snuggling together during cold nights, holding hands for comfort, katara finding ways to touch zuko’s scar or brush back his hair and zuko finding it extremely hard to not look at her lips or stare into her eyes. and of course they wouldn’t even realise they’re doing this because they’re silly kids in love

and after the search is over and they visit sokka and suki and toph and the gaang, everyone sees how they act together now and are all like “wait since when did you guys start dating?” and they’re like “wait what” and ursa just looks up from her tea like, “wait, zuko, you’re telling me katara’s not your girlfriend?” and zuko and katara would be so confused like they were totally just platonic pals this whole time right? lmao wrong

and eventually when everyone’s gone to bed and it’s just zuko and katara awake they’re all giggly and blushy with each other and then they sort of confess but in a way where it’s like they totally didn’t realise they were falling for one another but now that they’ve said it, it just makes sense. their first kiss would be under the starlight and it’d be all smiles and katara would run her hands through his hair like she loves to do so much and zuko would cup her cheek with one hand and hold her close around the waist with the other and everything would just fit into place. and katara would say something cute afterwards like “i don’t know why we waited so long. who knew an angst prince like you would be such a good kisser?” and zuko would grin like an idiot but he’s her idiot so it wouldn’t matter

the end scene of the finale would be a time jump to like 5 years in the future when katara’s 22 and zuko’s 24 and they’d be married and throwing a wedding at the fire palace for a@ng and a lovely girl he met and everything would be perfect and zuko’s favourite nickname for katara would be “his queen” and katara would call him a “jerkbender” to tease him (also because sokka and zuko are best friends and she picked it up from her brother fight me) and katara would have her goddamn statue and whenever zuko went out fighting villains she’d be right there beside him kicking ass

the end

lmao this was super long i apologise i just have a lot of feelings about these two. feel free to add your own headcanons, zutara is my favourite thing to talk about!!
