Kataang Week is when we, as a corner of the fandom, celebrate the ship Kataang! The prompts for Kataang Week 2017 were selected through seven rounds of voting over the last several weeks and all prompts were submitted by Tumblr users.
Cool, when is it?
Summer Kataang Week 2017 starts on Monday, July 24th - a little over seven weeks from today - and ends on Monday, July 31st..
How do I participate?
The most common ways to participate are by creating art or writing a fic and posting it online. Some people try and create something for every day while others only fill one or two prompts.
But I can’t draw or write!
That’s totally fine - there are more ways to participate! You can sing a song, create a graphic, write a poem - just about anything really. You can also show your support by reblogging and liking other people’s contributions.
What are the prompts?
The following will be the running order for Kataang Week 2017:
Smile - Monday July 24th
Best Friends - Tuesday July 25th
Dance - Wednesday July 26th
All-Nighter - Thursday July 27th
Clouds - Friday July 28th
Sleep - Saturday July 29th
Unconditional - Sunday July 30th
Free Day/Crossover/AU Day - Monday July 31st
How should I tag my work?
The easiest way for us to find your work so we can reblog it to this blog is by using the tag “kataang week”. Using “kataang” and “kataangtag” also help. You must tag one of the three in your first five tags otherwise it doesn’t appear in the search.
Once we’ve reblogged it to this blog we add our own tags (a prompt tag and a user tag) for easy organization. This means we can find all the work for one prompt or all the work from one user in one easy click (this also means that if you have changed your username since participating last year you need to let us know so we can update your tag!).
Can I post my stuff other places online too?
Of course you can!
Seven weeks is a long time away… why are you promoting all this so early?
To give people time to create quality content. In the past (and in other fandoms) we have seen ship weeks pop up out of no where with little to no notice and we just don’t think this works. We don’t know about you guys, but we need time to prepare! We also like to post WIP for Kataang Week and encourage everyone else to do so as well - we reblog it here for motivation!
As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, don’t hesitate to send an ask. Good luck, Kataangers, and happy content creating! :)
Hey, dear followers! So, a little update on my Kataang Week submissions…
Prompts called “Smile” and “Clouds” are officially done and waiting for their day to be posted. They’re two fanfics - the first one cracks me up every time I think about it because it’s hilarious, the second one is lit af.
I have 2 different ideas for “Dance” - a drawing or a fanfic (I was originally hoping to write the fanfic for “Last-Minute Scramble”, but that was cut out of the vote). I also have ideas of drawing something for the free day and writing a fic for “Sleep”. The only prompts I don’t have covered yet are “Best Friends” and “Unconditional”.
Here’s a sneak peek of “All-Nighter”, which is also supposed to be a (seriously belated) birthday gift for someone special here (I hope you know who you are, I wrote that I was making something for you but haven’t posted it yet - welp, this is it). If you’ve read my most recent fanfic, you know what scene this is. I just need to finish shading and draw the background.
Katara woke gasping for air. She shoved the blankets away from her face and sat up abruptly. The light of the full moon filtered through the window, casting silver shadows on the bedspread.
“Sweetie?” Aang murmured next to her, his voice heavy with sleep.
“S’okay,” she whispered, still staring at the moon out the window. “Go back to sleep.”
Katara heard him shift, heard his breathing normalize again, and she knew he drifted back into his dreams. She, meanwhile, curled her knees to her forehead, and tried to calm her erratic breathing and fluttering heart. She trembled and squeezed her eyes shut.
But when she closed her eyes, she only felt it more keenly: the sweet, seductive song of the water pumping through Aang’s heart, the steady thrum of blood flying through his vessels, a drumbeat pulsing in her head.
I think I have an idea for 'Sleep'-Kataang week-is there still time to join in?
I’m excited to hear you’ve got an idea for ‘Sleep’! I look forward to seeing what you create. :)
And Kataang Week is an open event for anyone and everyone - you don’t need to preregister or anything like that. Just have your creation for a specific prompt ready by the corresponding day during Kataang Week (for example, ‘Smile’ is Monday, July 24th). Late submissions are also accepted.
If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask!
I am super excited for Kataang Week, especially since I wanna do something for each prompt this year. I already know what I wanna write for “Dance” and “Sleep”, but yesterday, I was inspired by a certain episode from a certain series I used to love to watch all the time (but haven’t seen in a long while). And now, I know what I’m gonna write for “Clouds”. Oh-oh-oh-hoo boy, let me tell you, IT’S LIT.. literally. Here’s a short spoiler from my first draft (the wording might change later when I begin proofreading):
Whoo! I don’t even know what to say about this one… but it’s so silly, I should probably be embarrassed about it. XD
One thing I’ve always loved (thanks, Inuyasha fandom!) is ridiculous, angsty, romance AUs. There is nothing better than reading about two people completely in love with one another who can’t seem to figure out how to get together. Now, understand, I don’t mean that ~*love triangle crap*~ (sorry, Inuyasha fandom).
Instead, I’m talking about the type of story where two people love each other so much, and they’re so desperate to make each other happy, that they keep ruining their chances to hook up. Mmm! Delicious fluffy drama!
Anyway, the sad fact is that Avatar fandom is just short on AUs in general. I blame all the shipping wars, really. UGH. What more have you cost me, shipping wars??! Look at what you’ve driven me to! Inventing scenes of my own for fics that do not exist. (*Fangirl Problems*)
Ok, uh, I feel like I ought to explain what was in my head when I doodled this.
I suppose it’s the very beginning of the big final romance-y drama scene. Katara is moodily consoling herself on a balcony (so well-drawn!) when Aang arrives to tell her he’s leaving. Maybe he thinks she doesn’t love him. Maybe she’s engaged to someone else! Maybe the Avatar isn’t allowed to marry or something. IDK!
Whatever it is, it’s all about to come to the surface, because Katara isn’t going to be able to let him go without confessing her feelings. (And Aang, no matter how alternate the universe, isn’t going to let Katara’s love go unreciprocated.)
He never meant for it to slip out. The day had been so going so well; he and Katara were too big now to go penguin sledding, but they made new memories exploring the capital city, dragging Sokka into a snowball fight (in which he was severely outmatched), and slurping seaweed noodles under a brilliant setting sun.
The good vibes were still strong that night as they settled in for dinner at Hakoda’s. As always, his animated storytelling lit up the room, filling the house with chattering laughter. In the past the closeness of the Water Tribe family was intimidating, almost alienating to a young monk- maybe it was the flickering warmth of the fire, the baijiu that sat open on the table, or the pressure from Katara’s hand around his as they laughed, but that night Aang felt enveloped by their familial love.
He was almost drowzy with happiness when the taboo word escaped him. Hakoda offered to fill his glass. Katara looked at him with a sweet smile. The world seemed to slow down. “Thanks, Dad.”
Everyone’s face went blank for a second. Sokka snorted.
“I mean da- I meant- Hakod-” Aang sputtered, heat rushing to his cheeks.
Katara squeezed his hand, lips pressed hard together to try and hide her impish smile. Hakoda paused for a second, looking at Aang with a raised brow before bursting into laughter. “You’re welcome,” he said, handing Aang his drink with a wink.
Katara kissed him on the cheek. “Welcome to the family.”
Chapter 1 here (it’s a KW 2015 entry lol I know but this chap is for KW 2016 Day 2: Bitter)
Chapter 2 of my Avatar Aang/Councilwoman Katara AU, in which it is revealed that our two favorite flirts are also embarrassing dorks.
But for those who don’t want to read the first chap, all you need to know is that an unsuspecting Councilwoman Katara ended up saying some embarrassing things to Aang because she didn’t know he was the Avatar (something he didn’t mention to her either) and … she didn’t take it well.
You know what this is? This is fluff.
So today’s prompt is Bitter. But it turns out sweet in the end, don’t worry ;)
Katara sat alone at her table, pushing what was left of her steamed vegetables around her plate absently. It had been an hour since her encounter with him, and she was still left flustered and fuming.
After the Avatar had been properly welcomed, the real program had started. Mayors made speeches, as did other influential people. Over and over again, Katara was forced to clap and applaud whoever was talking without even properly listening to what they were saying—her mind was preoccupied with the obnoxious yet charismatic airbender she had just met.
Dinner had been served shortly after the last speech, and after her companions (or rather, the group of people she happened to sit with) left to dance and socialize some more, she stayed at their table, mentally debating whether or not she wanted to see Avatar Aang again.
YAY I finally thought of something for a prompt :D Sorry it’s rushed…
There were actually a few definitions for “deluge” but I went with “a heavy rainfall”. I like to think they kept that umbrella from The Fortuneteller and yes I know they can just bend the water to keep it off of them but being under an umbrella is cuter
