The Art of Renovating Violent Architecture Structures with a painful history are often resuscitated and reimagined with unrelated programs– most often transformed into art and cultural centers.Once a NATO base near Cologne, Germany, the site of Insel Hombroich was purchased by real estate dealer Karl Heinrich Müller in 1982 to promote local artists and architects. The site was first populated by work from Erwin Heerich, featuring a number of pavilions, residential and meetings spaces, and a cafeteria. In time, the 650 acres have been filled with additional works by lvaro Siza, Shigeru Ban, Frei Otto, and Tadao Ando.
