Impressions from my weekend at Kaptai Lake, Rangamati, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh
Kaptai Lake is a man-made lake in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It’s supposed to be the biggest artificial lake in South Asia. It was created in 1962 as a part of the Karnaphuli Hydro-electric project to provide the people living in this area with electricity. As a result 220 km2 of farmland as well as the palace of the Chakma king (Chakma refers to an indigenous community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts) went under water. 18.000 families and almost 100.000 people had to be displaced.
