kandinsky abstract

Happy Birthday Wassily Kandinsky!

Russian painter and pioneer of abstract art Wassily Kandinsky was born on this day in 1866.

Born in Moscow, Kandinsky grew up in Odessa, studied art in Munich, and travelled widely between 1903 and 1909 in Europe and Tunisia. In 1908 he moved to the village of Murnau in Bavaria where he painted a series of landscapes inspired by the Staffelsee lake and its surrounding mountains, including this one on display in our Modern Art Gallery. Although the individual elements of the landscape are still recognizable, the painting is moving towards abstraction, a combination of colour, line and form.
