Soundtrack to Sweet James Jones: Pimp C’s Trill Life Story

Not sure if tumblr scrollers read books but Ozone magazine founder/editor Julia Beverley has penned the most detailed rap bio ever and it deserves your attention. Given Pimp’s OG status, this mammoth text also doubles as a history of southern rap and this playlist consists of songs discussed in the book. Mama Wes tells the story of Chad vibing with a young David Banner and Kamikazee before recording “Get Crunk”, which recapped Pimp’s advice (“you make most of your cheese off production and shows”). The duo were initially concerned about the use of the “Rock Box” melody as Tela’s recently released “Twisted” used a similar interpolation but they were completely satisfied with the final product. During the recording, Pimp told them 8Ball was a “hoe” because his new song “My Homeboy’s Girlfriend” detailed an affair with the girlfriend of a Texas homey named C. There are 100’s of stories like that but the game is to be sold not told so do yourselves a favor and pony up $25.
