Ten Artists You Need to Hear

Once you’ve found your music comfort zone, in terms of artists and albums you listen too, it becomes quite difficult to venture out and discover something new and something completely different to what you normally listen too. Sometimes you need to take the plunge and look into artists that you would normally just brush over, they come from a variety of different genres such as Country, R&B and Rock, but all have similarities - including that of great songwriting and capabilities as storytellers, both of which contemporary pop seems to have forgotten.

The Shires - Country music in the UK has a history of being boring and dull, however this trend is finally changing. The leaders of this change have to be The Shires, the duo who only formed in 2013, have changed the way country in the UK is perceived. With two top 10 albums (on the pop charts) to their name, the Shires have transformed the way UK listeners see country and sound Nashville-bound on both of them albums (so far). This can be put down to the fact they’re the first UK act to be signed to a Nashville label and for The Shires, the sky truly is the limit.

Track you need to listen too : State Lines

Lord Huron - If you’ve been watching ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ on Netflix you would have heard one of Lord Huron’s songs, ‘The Night We Met’, but there catalogue goes far beyond this. With two albums, ‘Lonesome Dreams’ and ‘Strange Trails’, they have made indie rock emotive and really relatable. As well as this the band have created LPs that are great listens from start to finish and at the end of the day, thats what we all really want from a band isn’t it ?

Track you need to listen too : The Night We Met

Rag ‘N’ Bone Man - In the UK, Rag ‘N’ Bone man seemed to appear out of nowhere, but it is easy to understand why he has become such a success. With a bellowing bluesy voice and a killer sound Rag ‘N’ Bone man has a distinctive sound which when paired with a good song become a combination that stands out from the rest. Even though his debut album as a whole wasn’t what many had hoped for, you can be sure that Rag ‘N’ Bone Man will be round for years to come.

Track you need to listen too : Human

Leon Bridges - Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke - all three are timeless Rhythm and Blues artists but sadly it has felt as if there sound is left in the past, left in the 1960s. However Leon Bridges rejuvenates that old-school R&B sounds and brings it into the 21st century. With his debut album, Comin’ Home’ Bridges creates a sound that is so rare but also so beautiful. The albums comes from the soul and that is what music should be about, even though he has only one album at the moment - Bridges is sure to be able to emulate that sound (and success) onto many albums in the future.

Track you need to listen too : River

Chris Stapleton - What Leon Bridges has done for R&B, is what Chris Stapleton has done and continues to do for Country Music. The Kentucky native has brought back the sound of yesteryear blending Country with Southern Rock to create ‘Traveller’ which is by far one of the standout country albums for many years and has countered the bro-country movement perfect. Accompanied by his wife, Morgane, on backing vocals, Chris has created a country sound to cherish and admire which I can listen too time and time again. I cannot wait for his second album… which will hopefully be released this year.

Track you need to listen too : Fire Away

Jenny Lewis - Every now and again you get that perfect blend of genres, this is seen with Jenny Lewis who blends alternative music with country, and in the process creates something really great. Even though she has had three albums out (as a solo artist) I don’t tire of her sound. With truly country lyrics and an alternative sound, Jenny creates something just short of masterpieces, especially songs such as ‘Just One Of The Guys’ and ‘Acid Tongue’.

Track you need to listen too : Just One Of The Guys

Michael Kiwanuka - Personally I didn’t like Kiwanuka’s debut album ‘Home Again’, I just wasn’t a fan of the sound. However this has changed since he released the follow-up last year, ‘Love and Hate’. My love for his sound re-emerged after ‘Cold Little Heart’ became the theme tune to ‘Big Little Lies’ and has seen his work achieve even more praise than it did before. He is a soulful artist and his second album is a really good piece of music. Well worth a listen.

Track you need to listen too : Cold Little Heart

James Bay - If you want a blend of radio-friendly blues rock, Americana and indie then you need to listen to James Bay. The British artist has only had one album out at the moment but has made a big impact, his song ‘Hold Back the River’ has been a hit, but others from the album such as ‘Let It Go’ and ‘Scars’ make him an artist with depth and the ability to be self-aware, something that is really rare and needs to be appreciated. ‘Chaos and the Calm’, his first album, is a bit hit and miss in places, but when it works it really works.

Track you need to listen too : Let It Go

Kacey Musgraves - This is Country Music at its finest. That is all I can truly say about Kacey Musgraves, a two-time grammy winner, who has brought her retro sound to the forefront of a genre with an identity crisis. What makes Ms. Musgraves so unique is her ability to go from light and airy songs to something very dark and very deep. She also brings a political message with her, see ‘Follow Your Arrow’, but does it in a way that isn’t stuffy and in your face. She is a legend in the making and once you start listening, you won’t want to stop.

Track you need to listen too : Late To The Party

Tobias Jesso Jr. - A singer, a songwriter and a musician is what makes Tobias Jesso Jr. a triple threat. His album ‘Goon’ is filled with piano driven songs that are deep and emotive, rather than bland and boring - which many piano artists can be. Jesso also has the ability to make you feel what he is feeling and avoids making his music pop-friendly, which makes him an even greater artist. Although the album keeps a similar narrative throughout it doesn’t get tiresome and just makes you want even more.

Track you need to listen too : Without You

Story of my Life

Chapter 20

A/N:  So.  Here it is.  The final chapter of Story of my Life.  Roughly 84,000 fairly cohesive words.  I have never written anything this long before AND this one wouldn’t have happened without the encouragement and support of quite a few people.  So thank you so very much for believing in me and prodding me to continue. @irish-nlessing, @aggresivelyfriendly, @squirrely83, @lucyvanpelt78, @the-well-rested-one

I have the best betas in the world. They are phenomenally talented writers who share their time and opinions with me.  You ladies make me smile on the daily:  @whoopsharrystyles and @melissas173

Finally, none of this would have seen the light of day if not for the handholding and counselling and faith of my beautiful friend Alex ( @niallandharrymakemestrong).  I still can’t believe that she actually talks to me.

Okay.  Enough preachifying.  When we left off, they were about to meet THE GIRL…

Wednesday morning found Kacey, Harry, and Clarissa sat in the office of Amelia Williams, the Crown Prosecutor.  After offering them something to drink, she glanced at DCI Sheppard before continuing.

Story Meeting for SLA
  • Screenwriter 1: Alright, guys, so far in this scene, Sal-Lee's thanked Barbie. What's next?
  • Screenwriter 2: Maybe they should have a little heart-to-heart, possibly explore Sal-Lee's backstory-
  • Screenwriter 3: Shit man....... THE FLUFFY KITTY HASN'T POPPED YET
  • Screenwriter 1: Gosh darnit, Kacey, you're right! Popping time it is!
  • Screenwriter 2: But isn't it a bit abrupt to just end the conversation there-
  • Screenwriter 1: *sighs* Kate, this is a Barbie film. Kids want to see pets popping, not people bonding.

“We had just been at my parent’s house randomly having a night of watching bittersweet old home tapes of all these beautiful family memories that were made in this little, old country house I grew up in that I now have. We came back to that house afterwards and he had somehow pulled off having my sister + brother in-law completely decorate my childhood bedroom in the most nostalgic and perfect Christmas decorations. I was bewildered and confused when I saw it all and turned around and the song “Two For The Road” by Henry Mancini was playing (this song is so emotional and sweet..it’s one of my favorites..you have to go listen) and he was on his knee with a baby pink velvet ring box and the sparkliest thing I’ve ever seen! 💖It was so special. Of all the places in the world I’ve gotten to see, nowhere could mean more than this happening in tiny Golden, Texas in the house that completely made me who I am.” - Kacey Musgraves

You made my day! I have been smiling since I saw this.  I have a couple of ideas for some one shots about them in the future.  Just to update their story.  Who knows?  I might try to write Kacey’s books next.  Cook’s Postulates might be fun to write.

Welcome to the crazy world of Tumblr! We’re all kind of fun.

If you need some Harry fics, you can’t go wrong with @niallandharrymakemestrong.  She wrote one of the hottest things I’ve ever read (Midnight Memories of a Temporary Fix–Narry).  Plus she’s just lovely.

@whoopsharrystyles  just finished Steam (it was just effing super heated Steamy), Snog Me Senseless is sweet and wonderful and she has tons more.  Masterlist

@melissas173 has some lovely pieces (check out Parking).  I wish she would write more. (Yes I did, in fact, just call you out)  Masterlist

@the-well-rested-one has a magnum opus that she is re-releasing a bit at a time.  It’s a wonderful and timely epic book about going on tour with Harry called 25 tickets. (First rule of book club is we don’t talk about book club).

And if, by chance, you are a Niall fan as well, @lucyvanpelt78 has written the funniest, wonderful, great OFC Zoe in her series Unlikely.

Thanks again!  And Happy reading!

story of my life

Kacey was going to die.  She knew that.  Her attacker knew it too.  That the multiple stab wounds no longer hurt should have frightened her more but she was trying to focus.  She had to make it to the panic button.  She had to.  She could feel her consciousness slipping as she crawled slowly towards the alarm. She knew that help would not arrive in time to save her but that was not her goal.  She needed for them to get there in time to save him. If she couldn’t summon help before she died, he would arrive home to be greeted by whatever grotesque display the murderous girl had arranged with Kacey’s lifeless body and all the blood.  There was so much blood.  In his shock, he would not see the girl waiting for him. He would not be prepared to respond in the way she expected.  That’s when the fanatic would turn on him, catching him off guard, and kill him too.

She could not allow that.  She had to get help.  He was all she cared about, inching her way towards the coffee table.  Kacey was on the floor in the lounge where she had fallen the last time the girl had struck her. She was close but still could not reach the alarm button beneath the left edge of the table.  She could hear the young woman raving while she stalked around the room.  The teen’s voice was rising and falling, becoming more agitated listing all the ways that Kacey had wronged him.

“You were never enough for him!  How could you even think that you could be good enough for him? You are so short and fat.  And ugly!  He deserves so much better than you.  And he will have that.  He will have me.  I will love him!” she screeched. “YOU HURT HIM!  He has been so sad these last two weeks.  Sad and upset because of you! I have been watching him.  He never smiles anymore.  And you are responsible.  I saw you run out of the house and get in the cab. Oh you thought you were being so sneaky, but I saw you,”  her voice dropping to a whisper

As the girl continued to rant at her, Kacey moved steadily closer to the table.  It was hard for her to see where she was going, the cut on her scalp bleeding into her eyes.  She tried to wipe the blood away but her left arm didn’t seem to want to work.

The fan, distracted from her tirade, noticed her moving towards the table.

“You stupid bitch!  You can’t get away from me!  I am not going to let you hurt him anymore!  You deserve to die and I’m going to kill you.  He’ll see how I’ve taken care of his problems.  He’ll see that I LOVE HIM!”

The girl, her face red and contorted, moved closer and prepared to finish the job.  Kacey realized that she would not be able to reach the button in time and tried desperately to blink the blood from her eyes as her nemesis knelt down in front of her.   Raising the knife above her head, with both hands on the hilt, the intruder was ready to slash down at her throat.  Kacey had one last chance; the girl was so close.  Using all her strength, she struck out with the palm of her right hand.  It felt like time slowed as the heel of her palm moved towards the girl’s face, finally connecting with the nose.  She felt the cartilage crack as the girl’s head snapped back.  Kacey heard the knife clatter to the wood floor as her aggressor slumped backwards, the blow knocking her out.

Her whole body trembling, a small sob escaped Kacey’s lips.  She scooted herself towards the coffee table, her back against the sofa.  Her sight began to tunnel as she leaned over to the underside of the edge.  Just as she pressed the button, her vision went black.

You heard from your friends
That I’m doing ok
And you’re thinking, maybe you made a mistake
And you want me to know
But I don’t want to know
How you’re feeling

Keep it to yourself
If you think that you still love me
Put it on a shelf
If you’re looking for someone
Make it someone else
When you’re drunk
And it’s late
And you’re missing me like Hell
Keep it to yourself

Hannibal con write up! Ish. Bullet points, by memory… On October 16-18 in Heathrow London, the world’s first Hannibal only con took place. There were photo ops, autograph sessions, and a LOT of guest q&a’s. I’m just gonna write stuff down by actor, yeah? So let’s start with…

Kacey Rohl

Kacey was the bonus guest - she was not on the original guest list and was kept secret as a surprise for the fans. She’s so lovely! She’s very sweet and bubbly, and the response when she came onstage was so amazingly positive she started to cry, the dear sweet thing. She cried again during the closing ceremony because saying goodbye to all of us made her go all emotional. I thanked her for coming and told her I thought she was the best surprise we could’ve had. She’s also insanely pretty and fresh-faced in real life, by the way.
So some choice tidbits from her q&a’s..

  • The first time Abigail ate Hannibal’s food, she very much recognised it as human.
  • Abigail and Abel Gideon got to spend a significant amount of time together in Hannibal’s basement.
  • If she had gotten to escape to Europe with Hannibal, Kacey thinks her fake name should have been… Mona Collie.
  • Kacey reads fanfic. Before you start groaning - no, someone did not ask her about that. She actually brought it up herself (proving just how young she is). But, yes, she reads it. She likes fluffy stuff, but skips the racy bits as they make her feel icky (I mean, she works with these people…)
  • She didn’t much enjoy Abigail’s wardrobe as it was very ‘cardigan-y’ which isn’t her style.
  • If she could steal any souvenir from the Hannibal set it would be the painting of an ear which hung in Hannibal’s office.
  • she said that Abigail went with Hannibal because she knew it was the only way to save Will’s life. After that all she really did was just survive (up until she didn’t, obviously)
  • she doesn’t like to think of fannibals as crazy, she thinks they’re passionate and creative and ‘on fire’.
  • someone actually asked her what Hannibal would do while Abigail was locked up in his house and she’d get her period… cue a lot of giggling. Then Kacey basically owned the question by answering he’d simply put her on the kind of birth control that would make her stop menstruating. WE HAVE A WIN FOR KACEY ROHL.

I have to be honest, 2013 wasn’t a mind blowing year for music. Sure, I wore out my Janelle Monáe record (limited edition red vinyl of course!), my friends and I shamelessly twerked to Miley, and Beyoncé snuck in at the last moment delivering a ravishing video/music package, but on the whole I was left slightly underwhelmed. This year was also the hardest to pinpoint my top 25 favorite songs. In previous years I remember being stopped dead in my tracks upon hearing a song like The Tallest Man On Earth’s “1904” or Joanna Newsom’s “Good Intentions Pavement Co,” realizing that this was the song for which I’d measure every other tune that year. But what did really resonate with me this year was how precisely I could associate the songs on this list with specific moments in time. 2013 (more than any since I moved to New York) had the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. These tunes serve as a road map through a year filled with openings, breakups, closings, wrap parties, long days on set and quiet nights in my apartment. I hope some of your favorites made it onto my list and even more hope that you discover some new artists and tunes. Mazel Tov!
