I’m perfectly willing to admit when a show has made a mistake. Hell, I am even professionally educated in knowing how to do so!! And I know damn well which mistakes Wynonna Earp has made.
The end scene of 2x04 was not an error on the show’s part. (Plus, people are focusing on COMPLETELY THE WRONG THING from that scene anyway- Wynonna is possessed. This is a big deal? Why are we not talking about that?)
The “kiss” is not a reason for people to act like this show is suddenly garbage or is unwatchable or whatever else people are saying. It’s a fantastic show with great representation. It doesn’t need that, thanks.
For the record, it was barely even something that could be considered a kiss at all. Their top lips vaguely bumped against each other, and then Gooverly immediately pulled back so that it could transfer into Wynonna.
Wynonna closes her eyes because she’s flinching, unsure of what this thing is doing, and then her eyes snap open when the possession starts to take hold.
The Goo Demon is a monster looking for some chaos, a creature that would absolutely play the most uncomfortable card possible by transferring possession in that way. It wasn’t Waverly doing that. It was the Goo Demon being weird and disturbing and intentionally doing something that would completely lower Wynonna’s defenses by being something she would absolutely never expect.
We’ve seen possession before on this show. In 1x03. And the demon had to enter via the face in that similar way. The only reason that it was able to do so through the air was because it had a powerful magic spell backing it up. This demon is far stronger than the Revenants, we know that, but that doesn’t mean that it has the ability to just leap from person to person without a close contact like this.
That end moment from 2x04 was not a “mistake” on the part of the writers; it made complete narrative sense, and I’m not doing everything in my power to justify a show I love in saying so. I know when a show has made an error. I am perfectly willing to admit when a show as made an error. This, however, is being blown way out of proportion.
If the incest shippers are being “validated” by something that they are clearly taking completely out of context, by something that wasn’t even actually between Waverly and Wynonna and by something that was so non-sexual that it reminded me of those pecks on the lips that small children sometimes given each other or their parents, then that is their fault for being gross, not the fault of the writers.
Summary: Isak buzzes his hair off on a dare. Even suffers through the five stages of grief. (a.k.a., yes, I wrote a ficlet in response to Tarjei’s new haircut. Sorry not sor—you know what, yes, actually I am very sorry.) Can also be found on AO3 here.
When Isak walks through the door, Even does a double take.
Okay, maybe it’s more like a quintuple take. Who’s counting?
“What did you do to your hair?” he blurts, and it maybe comes out a little sharper than intended, because Isak winces pretty hard at his tone.
But…he just walked through the door…like that. Like it was no big deal. Like the Earth hadn’t just shifted on its fucking axis. Like Even’s entire reality wasn’t suddenly crumbling around him.
So, yeah. Faced with this…this travesty…Even can hardly be blamed for his reaction.
“Is it bad?” Isak asks, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “We got so drunk last night, and I can remember Magnus daring me to buzz it off but I honestly don’t remember actually doing it.”
Even’s going to find Magnus. He’s going to find Magnus, and he’s going to have words with him. Man to man. Dude to dude. Fist to face.
Okay, maybe not that last one. Even’s not a violent guy.
The opinion I’m about to express is an unpopular one, but I will talk about it anyway.
Let me start by saying that I love Max and Wolfgang. I have no problem with nude/sex scenes, and if these happen to be Max’, I sure as hell won’t mind. However, when there’s a concentration of these scenes in only one of his works, that’s when it starts to bother me because, like I said, I love Max and Wolfgang. I want Max’ work to showcase his skills as an actor, not how hot he is as a man. I want Wolfgang’s storyline to be given depth and enough screen time, not just a blatant show of his sexual energy and his desperate love for Kala.
Ep06 Naked, but covered up (Justified) / full-frontal in the orgy scene (Unjustified)
The scenes I’ve considered, in my opinion, justified, are ones that feed directly into the plot, serve to introduce us to Wolfgang and his obvious sexual energy, freedom, and his taste in women. They help us understand his approach to relationships if you’d like.
The full-frontal ones were unjustified because we didn’t need to see his package inorder to know why Kala fainted. Even if I let this one go, I can’t let go of the other one during the orgy scene.
I won’t put much focus on season one because, if I’m being completely honest, I could let go of my reservation over the two full-frontal scenes if I wanted to. They didn’t feel awkward or stand out as weird or offensive, they were done artistically, but after watching season two, and after how it made me feel about Wolfgang’s storyline, I had to re-think season one as well.
Let’s move on to season two, shall we? You’ll find it under the cut because it’s a pretty long list. If you haven’t watched season two yet, I strongly recommend you stop reading.
In season two we get the below nude/sex scenes:
Ep01 The Tinder hook-up (Justified)
Ep03 The whole Lila encounter (The way it was done is unjustified)
Ep04 The ‘Hello Sexy’ bit set my teeth on edge. This guy could kill you with his bare hands so please don’t reduce him to something one would masturbate to. So this is unjustified.
Ep05 Again, Lila and her raging hormones over Wolfgang. We get a female full-frontal this time for a change (Valeria didn’t know it would be done this way. She said so in an interview at the premiere) and we have yet another pass at Wolfgang because it appears twice wasn’t enough (Unjustified)
Ep06 Wolfgang playing football, shirtless, while Kala salivates, then she asks, panting, “Do you have to do everything so intensely?”(Unjustified)
Ep06 Wolgang’s glorious ass on display in the shower with Lila eyeing his package, telling him not to cover it up, and whole scene takes place with him wet and wrapped in a towel (Unjustified)
Ep08 Let’s keep that hottie wet and do a scene of him in a sauna (Unjustified)
EP08 Wolfgang and the punching bag. I approve, but when Wolfgang is kicking it and we get a close up of his crotch instead of a wide shot? No, that’s unjustified.
Ep08 Lila wiping sweat off Wolfgang’s chest and licking it off her fingers (Unjustified)
Ep08 Lila sitting in Wolfgang’s lap at the restaurant (Justified)
Ep12 Lila shows up saying, “Welcome home, sexy. I’ve missed you” could these lines get any cheesier? (Unjustified)
Please note that I didn’t include the orgy scene because that applied to everyone. I also didn’t include the Kalagang sex scene because it feeds the plot and their relationship dynamic (And I loved that scene so damn much, I replayed it countless times).
Wolfgang’s storyline boils down to Lila propositioning him, him getting a few bits of information from her, and we get a few scenes of him silent and broody around the cluster. We also get a few extremely satisfying Kalagang scenes, but even as beautiful as these scenes are, they don’t justify the lack of a proper storyline and dialogue.
Some of you might say that if Max is OK with it, then this whole post is pointless. To those of you who think that, please remember that I, as a viewer, am entitled to an opinion when I feel that my favourite character is written wrong.
To me, Lila seems to represent all fangirls/fanboys in the fandom who are thirsty for naked Max/Wolfgang regardless of the story. It does neither Max nor Valeria any good.
