i know i said i was going to bed earlier and i will but i’m laying here in the dark after chugging a big sweet tea and i just have to say this
storytelling like that of sandsverse and car boys that uses an internet medium to worldbuild and get absolutely fucking crazy is the fucking future. i’m so invested in the videos that nick and griffin put out because yeah they’re just big goof videos but they contain such a rich fiction, such a wonderful universal fiber that keeps me hooked in so well? and it’s the same with the fucking sandsverse blogs they’re these big monuments to internet goofs and hard to parse jokes but the lore is so engaging and fun to peruse and explore they’re so beautifully made
like all the boring fiction i’ve ever written has been just that it’s always been in the form of a written or typed or drawn story but in video games and in social media and on different platforms i’ve approached such a zenith of storytelling and creation that i could never achieve just by j.r.r. tolkiening it out
Hey, I saw your tags on the ladywongs post, so I just wanted to know your opinion about the latest touka/mutsuki. honestly, I feel it unnecessarily complicated something so simple and it made me feel violated, cause I feel like I loved a character that was not touka. Do you perhaps...have an insight you wanna share?
Well, I was grateful for the shoutout that meta gave me and I’ve been a fan of a lot of metas that writer has produced, but this one in particular I very much disagreed with. I think the claim that Touka loves the idea of Kaneki while not really understanding the person ignores the fact that every time she’s made a serious observation about Kaneki she’s been bang on the money.
If she idolises Kaneki so, why has she made such a damning assessment about him? And it’s not just an assessment of the changed Shironeki that she resents, it extends to the Kuroneki she supposedly idolises as well. And what’s more, she’s completely right. This is even acknowledged by Kaneki himself.
Touka doesn’t idolise an image of Kaneki. Far from it. The chapter on the bridge is titled “Penetration” because Touka sees past the roles Kaneki plays to the scared kid inside. At this point, she probably has the best understanding of Kaneki than anyone in the series - maybe even more than Hide. For further proof, Touka knows at a FREAKING GLANCE just what Kaneki intends to do to himself when they meet up at Cochlea.
If this was just a casual “Seeya”, do you think it would be all Touka would say to him after all this time? She can tell Kaneki has no intention of making it out alive, so the first thing she does is to remind him that his death won’t affect him alone, and it very clearly shakes him up; setting him on the path to choose to live. Just like how their confrontation on the bridge convinced Kaneki to go back to Anteiku, if not quite in time.
Touka’s not being unreasonable because the Kaneki she idolised has changed. She’s mad because Kaneki’s going down a path of self-destruction, and it does destroy him. In the last quarter of the first manga the narrative breaks its back pointing out that Kaneki’s gone too far down the Shironeki path - it’s not just Touka, it’s also Yoshimura, Nishiki, even resident devil on Kaneki’s shoulder Shuu, not to mention events like Kaneki stabbing Banjou, seeing Rize crazed and helpless, and all the foreshadowing packed into ‘The Hanged Man’s McGuffin’. Touka is trying to help Kaneki because she genuinely does know what’s best for him because she genuinely understands him. I don’t think anyone would try to claim that convincing Kaneki to live at Cochlea was a bad thing either.
Now if Touka is ‘obsessed’ with Kaneki, if it can’t possibly be love because they only knew each other for two months, then it would stand to reason that Kaneki would be far, far more important to Touka than she would be for him.
Then why is it that in Kaneki’s mind, after only knowing Touka for two months and Hide for all his life, Touka is on equal footing with Hide? He includes the whole of Anteiku in the above panel, but Touka gets special mention with Hide in the next.
And here, in his dying moments, Touka gets the biggest panel, placed on the next page for the biggest effect. Touka is just as important to Kaneki as vice-versa.
But neither is ‘obsessed’ with the other.
Touka broke into Cochlea to save Hinami, not Kaneki. She didn’t even know he was there. She most definitely has a life outside Kaneki and her love for him is far from all-consuming. While he had lost his memories, she was fully willing to accept the possibility she might never talk to him again. She might love him, but if she was obsessed and didn’t have a life outside of him, there’s no way she could make a sacrifice like that even if her aim was selflessness. Yoshimura loved his daughter, and set up Anteiku anticipating her return, but he had a life outside of her too. It’s the same with Touka.
The original post tries to dismiss Touka’s feelings being a healthy form of love by comparing it to spending three years dedicating yourself to a co-worker who you knew for two months, but dumbing it down to their official relationship and a span of time removes an enormous amount of context to explain why she feels this way. In real life, you wouldn’t have fought side-by-side with your co-worker in life-threatening situations time and time again. These kind of high-pressure environments cause bonds and trust to become much much thicker much more quickly. “Summer friends will melt away like summer snows, but winter friends are friends forever”.
Sure Touka sees Arata in Kaneki. That’s not a bad thing at all. Arata was a great dude. Having an Arata in your life is a real positive thing, and there’s absolutely no reason why Touka shouldn’t chase it. People are hardwired to get with people who remind them of their parents - it’s in our genetic programming, it doesn’t diminish the love they feel for that person or make them love them less for who they are in the slightest. Trying to heal the wounds of old losses by emotionally investing yourself in new people is totally healthy - the unhealthy thing would be to shut yourself off from the world, just like Touka was doing at the start of the manga - a rut Kaneki helped her out of. It would be bad if she were just pretending that Kaneki was Arata, but she isn’t - she behaves totally differently around him and she has demonstrated many times an understanding of those personality traits Kaneki possesses that are completely different from Arata’s. It would be problematic if Kaneki got with someone who reminded him of his mother (read: Rize) because his mother was a horrible person; but Touka, even if she occasionally throws a hit at him (a product of her upbringing which is very rare nowadays - also Kaneki is nowhere near as vulnerable in this situation as he was a child, he’s the OEK for crying out loud), constantly gives Kaneki both the emotional attention and the hard truths that he needs.
Is unambiguously a good thing. Touka’s development was never about growing into herself without the need for others, because she was already like that at the start of the manga. Touka’s development was about rediscovering the humanity she cast aside to protect herself from pain, and then balancing that with the strength she found with being a Ghoul. The first stage was greatly aided by Kaneki - whom she indeed admired, but never idolised - and the second stage she completed herself.
Mutsuki’s love is a different beast entirely than Touka’s love. Mutsuki’s focus on Touka was precisely to emphasise Mutsuki’s jealousy, because Mutsuki recognises the bond Kaneki and Touka share. Mutsuki’s feelings are not meant to parallel Touka’s, but tie in with the other complicated entanglements of this arc, showcasing different kinds of love. I do strongly believe we’ll get both Touken and Akiramon resolutions soon, and positive ones too; the negativity around love this arc has displayed to us so far is set up to make those two relationships shine brighter.
So don’t worry anon, just because a meta says Touka is different from how you think about her doesn’t mean it’s right - it’s all a matter of interpretation. No one person’s opinion is automatically more important than another (except in this case maybe Sui Ishida - and maybe not even then, if you adhere to Death Of The Author literary theory), your analysis is just as valid as anyone else’s if you can argue it with evidence.
But even so, I am very much of the opinion in this fandom that if you see any meta that tries to claim that none of the main characters have developed at all since the start of the manga, take it with approximately this much salt:
The hardest thing about being considered a particularly smart or talented person is that people seem to automatically think your capabilities are like a dial that you can just set to whatever you want, so then they get confused when your output doesn’t match what they expect of you.
“So I just got my essay grade back: B+.”
“Oh but honey, you’re so smart! I know you’re capable of getting all A’s!”
“Yeah well… apparently not, because, y’know, if I was, then obviously I would get all A’s….?”
Like, do you think I just half-ass things for fun or something? When people say stuff like that, do they expect us to smack our foreheads and go “Oh YEAH, you’re right, I FORGOT, I guess I’ll just dial my Try-O-Meter back up to 100% because it obviously slipped while I wasn’t looking, so I can continue on my merry way being perfect at everything I do”.
i don’t often make text posts anymore so this is a little awkward um
what i wanted to say is; i get too often comments or tags on my work that are something like ‘i wish i could do this’ or ‘why can’t i draw like this’ etc, and it makes me pretty sad. i dont think you should put other artists on some kind of…unreachable pedestal. because it’s just not true…at all
you CAN draw like this, you CAN draw even better than this. i truly believe that given time and effort, anyone can improve at drawing…just like honing any kind of skill
i played the guitar for three years in my teens and i was still awful at it, you know? i never really practiced enough, and three years is not very long. i could kinda play the melody for ‘let it be’ by the end, and i was pretty happy with that. i just never had the drive for it that i have for drawing, so i didn’t stick with it
we all struggle with not being good enough for one reason or another, and it’s normal to get frustrated at our abilities sometimes, but…
if you have the passion for it you can really do pretty much anything
Since you guys are usually sending asks my way (Thank you <3), i wanted to take my turn to ask the questions. So let’s play a little game.
I’d like to ask you stuff involving these 4 guys, every now and then. Hypothetical situations and what would you do (or just random questions). You guys can answer by reblogging and adding gifs or use the reply button. That’s up to you ;)
I will start with this one because i sent it months ago to my closest Tumblr friends and their replies were hilarious.
*Forget that they’re famous for a second*
You’re on your first date with Tom/Chris/Sebastian/Jared (You choose), and as soon as he sees you, he says:
“Please don’t feel bad but i think you could’ve dressed better for our date”.
Hmm Octavia and Illian. Octilian? Illavia? Whatever it is, idk if I like it. I like that she has someone closer to her age that can help her move on, but can anyone really replace Lincoln? I'm conflicted.
This show doesn’t do the idea of sex as love. She isn’t “replacing” Lincoln. She’s having sex with Ilian because she wants to feel something.
Which is a helluva lot better than the last thing that gave her feels, aka: killing.
So why don’t we just take it as a positive step in healing and character development and not think this means they have to be endgame.
Their prey thinks all they want from her is to drink her blood and kill her at some point. But gets absolutely terrified when they touch her in a more intimate way, like kissing or touching her body and implores them to not do more than that because there's nothing that terrifies their prey more than sexual assaulting.
♥Shu: Hm? What’s with you? I’m not going to touch you in any indecent place… I just want your blood. Nothing else. But, if you want me to do something with you… We could give it a try.
♥Reiji: There’s no need to get so desperate… I’m not like the rest of my brothers. I mean, I could punish you, but not in that way… Unless you beg for it.
♥Ayato: Chichinashi, I’m not a savage!…But that scared face you’re making right now… Do it more, and give me more of your blood. Heh, this gets me excited…
♥Kanato: Agh, did you really think I would lay a finger on you?! In case you’re stupid, I’m not interested in those things! Or are you such a dirty human to even think I would do that?
♥Laito: Yes, Bitch-chan… You should really be afraid of me, nfu~ But don’t worry, I’m not going to take you against your will… You’ll be the one asking me to ravish you~
♥Subaru: D,dumbass! Why would I…?! I’m not like that fucking perverted Laito! It’s not like I desire you or anything!
♥Ruki: You really have a dirty mind, Livestock. To think your Master would do such things with you… You should be afraid of yourself instead. You’re the one who makes up all those thoughts.
♥Kou: Hahah, that’s adorable, M Neko-chan! Do you really think I would do that with you?! Pfft, I don’t even find you attractive, so don’t worry about that~
♥Yuma: Heh?! Why would I want to fuck you, Sow?! Don’t be stupid. I’m just interested in your blood, so don’t come with any strange ideas! But who knows… Maybe, someday, I could take advantage of your fears…
♥Azusa:… Eve… I only need your blood… But I want to make you… Feel good at the same time… So, don’t worry… For now, I only want to cut you… And give you a lot of… Friends… But… Whenever you want to… We can go… Further… Fufu~
♥Carla: What makes you think I enjoy your physical appearance? I’m only doing this to purify your dirty blood, human.
♥Shin: Hah? Why would I ever think on doing those things with you? Hell, I wouldn’t dare mix my ancient blood with yours…
22. “I can’t do this without you” with Gibbs? <3 <3
“Jethro, I know what I said, but-”
“But nothing.” He interrupted, and your stomach dropped at how detached his voice sounded. “You said you never wanted to see me again. I’m just trying to do what you want me to do.”
You exhaled, shaking your head with a scary wave of fear. No, you couldn’t lose Jethro like this. Not because of some stupid fight where you said something you didn’t mean. And not right now. “Jethro, please. I didn’t mean it. I can’t do this without you. You said you’ll always be there for me.”
Gibbs’ eyes stayed away from yours as he thought it over. It occurred to you just how hard your heart was beating, and it skipped a beat when he looked up. “I still will be.”
something im going to miss about the new season of samurai jack is that jack no longer has those long walks where he would usually admire the scenery and interact with people or animals, now he’s just sad, angry and hallucinating by years of hiding and losing his sword
aku is pretty much the same besides the fact that he acts like he doesn’t want to do anything, like he gave up about killing jack and just doesn’t care anymore or atleast hides it by not being in public anymore
dear duke, what's your stance on networking in relation to writing and/or publishing? obviously it is a huge help to know people in the field for future reference but. how does one go about gaining a useful network? how is it possible to expand your circles from underground poets and short story copycats to... well, influential people?
If you’re networking with the hopes of trying to get yourself published that way, stop, rewind, and rethink. There’s a couple reasons not to do this:
Everyone will see straight through it, they will not be impressed, and they will not want to talk to you.
99 times out of 100, it doesn’t work.
Occasionally, yes, people ride coattails into the publishing biz, but that usually only happens if they’re married to someone famous or something and can call in favors. Everyone else’s best chance is just to submit their stuff like they’re supposed to do and hope that an agent (and later an editor) think that stuff is good. Publishing is still, at the end of the day, about books that will sell. That either means (1) you’ve written a good book or (2) you’re famous enough that will people will buy it anyway and don’t care if it’s good.
If you’re going to network in the writing/publishing world, you should be doing it because there are people there you can learn from, not people you can mooch favors off. So that’s the first thing to keep in mind. If you really, genuinely want to talk to somebody because you respect their wisdom, it should be pretty easy to strike up conversations. If you just want to talk to them because they’re influential and you think you can get something out of it, that will be obvious to them. It’s
“I loved your short story in [x] magazine and I was wondering how you went about doing the research for the stun gun/watersport/whatever” vs. “Oh hi. You’re such a great writer. I’m a writer, too. So, who’s your agent? Would they read my manuscript?” That just puts everyone in an uncomfortable situation, so don’t do it, and don’t worry about meeting influential people. If you happen to know someone in the industry and want to ask their advice, great. For instance: I had contacts with a couple of lit agents and asked if they’d be willing to critique my query letter before I sent it, and after that I didn’t even submit it to either one of them because I wanted to be very clear that there was no expectation of them doing me any farther-reaching favors. That’s the kind of networking that’s going to help you: networking that makes you smarter about the business. So worry about that, not about how to use someone else’s influence to cheat the system. Trust me, your odds are much better that way.
You know what I’d love to see in season 2? Laughter. Like, the real kind. I wanna see Jace trip over a wrestling mat or something, and Izzy just burst out laughing. I wanna see Magnus & Alec giggling about an inside joke between the two of them. I wanna see Luke and Clary reminisce about something funny Jocelyn used to do, and start to laugh so hard, tears come streaming down their cheeks. I want Simon watching an old movie and chuckling at the crappy special effects. That’s all I want, sh writers! I want my babies to laugh! God knows they deserve it.
So something that I really struggle with is how to borrow things from various belief systems without appropriating them. Do you have any tips?
Well biggest one is to not take from closed cultures. If someone within the culture says no, don’t do it. Thats super easy.
If you want to use something thats from an open belief system or culture, make sure you honor it fully and don’t water it down. Learn about it, respect it. Why are things done this way and why is this belief like this.
With witchcraft, it can actually be pretty easy, as long as you aren’t taking from different cultures and just taking from different witchcraft practices. For example: you can take a bit of weather magic, green magic, or tech magic and have an eclectic practice and not have to be appropriative of any cultures.
As a novice artist who often feels ashamed and embarrassed and afraid of drawing sometimes (which severely hinders my own improvement) I just wanted to say thank you. From the bottom of my heart thank you so so much
its really something that makes me upset like why do people think its cool to shit on artists bc they are still learning?
it isnr cool or funny? and i want you to keep drawing im so proud of you for trying your best i swear i am here anytime if you need to rant/want some low quality tips!!
Last summer I was babysitting these two little girls and we were outside and a bee landed near the younger one on a bush and I expected them to freak out because most kids are scared of the stingy sorts of bugs, but they just crowded in to watch the bee move from flower to flower, quiet and curious, and the older one looked over her shoulder at me to inform me “Just don’t touch them. Bees don’t like to be touched.”
Every time I see a #savethebees post I think about that and how like … so many animals have been negatively affected by humans because parents teach their children to fear the ones that bite. Bees don’t go out of their way to sting people. They don’t want to hurt anyone. They literally die if they sting you, it’s not something they’re looking to do. They just want to visit your flowers, maybe sniff at your colorful shirt just to make sure it isn’t a flower, and then move on with their bee lives. But because they can sting, when one flies by, parents freak out, BE CAREFUL IT MIGHT STING YOU, so children learn that bees are evil. Children learn fear from their parents, they aren’t born afraid of anything. If we taught kids (like those girls’ parents clearly did) that bees are our friends, but the sort of friends who would just rather you didn’t touch them, I bet we as a planet would be more willing to save them.
