just trying out a tutorial

Day 18: I used one layer because I’m a lazy person. Also, inspired by this post!

thanks @crypticdatesuggestions for the amazing text posts!

“Date the girl with wings ten times too big for her slender, fragile-looking form, that looks like it could shatter like glass at any moment. Date the girl who bleeds rich black India ink when she’s cut, and who’s sketchbooks are full of beautiful illustrations etched in her own blood. Date the girl who’s eyes are sharp and cold, but when she looks at you, soften, and grow so warm it feels like standing next to a bonfire when she looks you in the eye.”

Shawn Jackson and Hasse Bernfield, better known as Whit and Slug.  These two are Nana’s adopted grandsons, and certified little shits– ESPECIALLY Whit.  Both of them have spent most of their lives on the planet too.

Whit came to the planet with their (rich) family to live in one of the colony.  They got their nickname because of the old Whitworth rifle they carried around: it’s a family heirloom and they would always brag that they would inherit it and use it one day.  They’re kind of annoying, 110% sass, and a joker.  It was them who told Nana all that dumb shit that she totally believes.

Slug’s parents died in a mining accident and he became a bit of an outcast in the community.  He wouldn’t let anyone near him and ended up bullying kids out of food and money.  When he tried to steal from Whit, an outcast in their own right, they became fast friends.  He got his name from his weapon of choice: the shotgun.

Also Whit is totally pining for Slug.

So this is currently my main process that I started using about 2 months ago. I use it for pics like this and this too but use a square brush to paint instead of a a soft round. It seems faster than my old way using a hard brush with varying opacity/flow.

I have a few other things tagged with tutorial. Just keep in mind that I’m mostly self taught so there might be better methods out there.

yo you got any essential features of photoshop? like right now ive basically only just discovered the thing where you make a layer that doesnt go outside of the lines of the layer you connected it to. i was just wondering since youve got some crazy effects in your art that i probably couldnt replicate without serious manhours

Haha you mean clipping masks? Ah man I do a lot of stuff subconsciously so I don’t really think about it much but uhh… some random things:

- holding shift lets you draw in a straight line. putting your stylus down on a certain point then holding shift and touching another part of the canvas connects the dots

- to make a quick glow: set a new layer to Screen and airbrush a bright color over the area. adjust opacity accordingly.

- you can use gaussian blur to quickly indicate depth (blurring the background or foreground)

- if your values are messed up you can go into Curves and fiddle with it. no need to repaint anything lol

- ctrl + h hides the marching ants that show up when you make a selection. the selection is still there and you can deselect easily with ctrl + d

- if you drew something and you realize it’s out of proportion/perspective/etc: edit>transform>distort and tweak it until it’s right. no need to erase and redraw.

- go to windows>actions and create a new action. press record and record yourself flipping the canvas horizontally. bind it to a key and you can now flip your canvas back and forth with the touch of a button

If there’s an effect in my art you’re curious about just point it out and i’ll try to remember what i did.

Two things I shall say now. First, In terms of power, I declare Wilford being higher because which persona have you seen actually TAKE OVER the channel by PLAYING GAMES? Playing actual games on the channel? That's why Dark needs his help. Second, if you heard about Darkstache, the trash pairing, Mark Bop/Yandere. XD

that’s true! not to mention, the warfstache is on mark’s icon as well. he’s a very big part of mark’s channel as a whole. so i definitely agree!

omg just wilford trying to teach dark how to play video games. dark would probably end up breaking the controller like just trying to figure out the damn tutorial lmao

and you know you have my support for markbop and yand! ship away, friend 💙

I did a thing. Since I can’t see Midnight Special yet in my country, I’m gonna jump in the bandwagon and pour my frustration into creativity - all hail #operation lensflare!

This one’s dedicated to @adam-drives-me-wild - she had a dear wish of seeing Kylo with glasses on top of his head, holding back his majestic hair. I tried drawing him with his hair back, but really, you simply can’t contain the dark side hair magic, so this is what I ended up with. Hope this cheers you up anyway!
Returning from 5 years of no-drawing has been quite a ride - this one was the first thing I drew using my old wacom and PS. It’s starting to feel more familiar with the right tools. It’s still largely just me reading tutorials and trying out different techniques - but it is getting easier, more enjoyable!

Okay, next up I have two WIPs - Reylo angst and Reylo smut. Which should I grab next, hmmm?

Sophie Devereaux: I’m a grifter. For better or worse

Hello! I’ve gotten a couple of messages asking me how I got the lights to work, so i’m just gonna go ahead and make a quick tutorial. I didn’t take TOO many shots while doing this, so please forgive me! Half of this is me just…. trying things out and hoping for the best!

Heyo, your beautiful 1-person-choir covers have inspired me to maybe try something like this myself and I was wondering whether you'd be willing to share some of your... methods? The environment you record in, how you organize and keep track (hah) of all those different tracks, whether you plan out the harmonies beforehand or just go ahead by ear, what your post-processing looks like, this sorta thing? Because I'm a bit intimidated by the scope of such a project and you have some experience óvo;

Oh sure! It’s easy once you know where to start!

As for environment, if I want really good quality I sit under a blanket like so:

(This is to prevent echo and worsen the quality of the recording for you guys who’s like what the fuck girl)
Otherwise I just sit in my bedroom, it’s pretty non-echo-y and works fine if I wanna do many voices.

Around 10 tracks is the bare minimum in my opinion. That gives a little effort but a rather full choir. In my latest one (”Warriors”) I used 10 tracks for each harmony, plus some harmony on that harmony pff - it’s for the full-sounding effect! And in the end it resulted in quite many tracks so win win win!

So once I’m done recording those 10 tracks (maybe I split it so 5 of those are harmony and 5 are main vocals) I save it and compress it into one mp3 file so I can move it freely and fit it wherever I want.

This is many voices, so be careful so that your sound doesn’t start screeching (like if you scream really loudly and it can’t take it so it goes all white noise on you)
Lower the volume enough on each track so that doesn’t happen. It’ll do loads!

So eh yes, to summarize that; record in strategic parts.

Choosing what song you wanna do is tricky, because you wanna find one that’s not too hard to do, but that also sounds good. So it’s after you’ve chosen a song you can start planning your choruses.

So far, I’ve done it in some different ways:

Since I can’t read sheet music I go by ear, and I experiment A LOT. I improvise A LOT. So don’t be afraid to do that! Sometimes it’s nah, and sometimes it turns out awesome.

WIDTH! Withdt witdth - To get width in your recording, turn each and every track in the left and right speaker, gradually. (Track 1, left 90%, Track 2, right 90%, Track 3, left 70% etc) but listen carefully so it doesn’t weigh to much on just one ear!

Adding reverb/echo is a good way to make your choir sound fuller.

Here’s a sample of Homeland, where I had one main vocal but also focus on the choir. The main is in the left ear and the choir in the right so you can hear properly (no mastering was done on that one so it sounds very flat)

And as you can probably hear I forget a lot what I’m really supposed to sing?? pff so in some parts I’m like wait where am I BUT THAT’S OKAY you can bullshit a lot as long as nothing major stands out and ruins it all. But try to make all your voices sound decent.

I edit my final product in Studio One

I probably forget a lot now or miss out something you’re wondering about but just wing it, try out some songs and you’ll get the gist!

I found an Undertale AU that relates me back to HeinousStuck and I love it. Why do I love spooky AU’s so much? I don’t get it.

I didn’t mean for the hair to turn out blue, I was just trying to go by a shading tutorial and that just happened. :’)

  • Kristen is the one who is out and proud and doesn’t give a flying fuck about what people think about her sexuality. At first, Siobhan wasn’t sure how to deal with this, because she wasn’t sure if she wanted people to know that about her.
  • Kristen’s parents are middle-aged hippies who just kinda let her do her thing. She doesn’t really have a curfew, rides her bike everywhere, and is a pescatarian.
  • Siobhan (and her siblings too), on the other hand, are this far away from getting a microchip implant to track their location, and Siobhan has to be home by 9:30 on school nights and by midnight on weekends.
  • Siobhan likes building and creating things in her spare time (when she’s not playing her guitar or hanging out at Kristen’s parents’ place).
  • Kristen likes reading doorstoppers of fantasy novels (and the Supernatural books) and listening to Original Broadway Recordings of musicals in her spare time.
  • For their first date, Kristen asked Siobhan out. They had dinner at the local Applebee’s and saw Catching Fire in the movie theatre.
  • For their fifteenth date, Siobhan drove them to the last remaining drive-in in town, and they half-watched, half-made-out-through Singin’ in the Rain. (Kristen had to instate a no-kissing-during-the-musical-numbers rule before the movie started.)
  • Siobhan briefly dated a guy from the nearby all-boys’ Catholic school (St. Alphonso’s Academy’s brother school), and went with him to their joint winter dance. Kristen never dated anyone before Siobhan.
  • Kristen likes to give Siobhan manicures. It’s really a front though; she just likes to try out nail art she sees in YouTube tutorial videos.
