I feel like people don’t get what the term “queer” entails in the south and why I personally do not like being called that. If someone down here calls you a “queen” or “fag”/”faggot” or “homo”, they’re usually making fun of you and mocking you. But when the word “queer” comes out of their mouth, that’s a sign of aggression, and it’s also sign that you probably should try to leave the situation you’re in. I’ve literally never heard the word “queer” (as a slur) down here outside of an aggressive situation or a heated argument. I guess that’s why being called that just rubs me the wrong way and makes me feel a little anxious.
