You stood over the sink, staring down at the stick which was yet to tell you if you were pregnant or not. You’d been feeling a little off for a couple weeks now, you just didn’t think it was because you were pregnant again. You’d thought you were coming down with a cold due to exhaustion from the holiday rush and the raging Boston winter, but then you missed your period; that was the moment you realized you and Chris hadn’t been as safe as you’d thought.
It was exciting to think that you were going to have another child, you secretly hoped it was a girl for Chris’ sake; he seemed pretty excited the last time you discuss that possibility. But there was also a part of you that was nervous because you knew what this meant for the two of you; chaos in the household and workplace. The only thing that calmed you was knowing you had Chris by your side and that the two of you were a very good team, it also helped knowing you had a great group of family and friends who were always ready to lend a hand. So while the pregnancy was not planned, the baby was going to be well-received and easily transitioned into your busy lives.
The timer on your phone went off as Chris knocked on the bathroom door; both sounds made you flinch. “You’ve been in there a while, are you okay?” Chris called as you turned the timer off. “Y/N?” He knocked again as you picked up the stick, a smile spread across your lips when you saw that it was positive. “Hey, are you-” He cut himself off when you opened the door; you held the stick behind your back. “What were you doing in there?” He chuckled softly.
“Um- I…” You couldn’t speak, you were so breathless.
“Do you think you can tell me downstairs?” He quizzed, beckoning his head towards the door. “We’re decorating the tree and Jack’s eating more popcorn than he is stringing it.” He started towards to the door but you grabbed his arm, stopping him. “What?” He turned around to face you; his eyes widened when you held the positive test in front of his face. “Oh my God,” he breathed, tears welled in his eyes as he took the test from you to study it. “Is this?” He quizzed and you nodded, smiling. “Are we? Like- really?”
“You’re holding the test in-”
“Yes!” Chris cheered, wrapping his arms tight around you and lifting you off the ground as your arms snaked around his neck. “Oh my God, yes! Yes yes yes!” He spun you in a circle and you laughed, excited he was excited. “Oh my God,” he breathed, lowering you onto the ground but not pulling away from the hug. “We’re going to be parents again, babe.”
“Are you okay with that?”
“Are you kidding me?” He pulled away and cupped your face in his hands. “This is the best early Christmas present ever. I mean-” he ran a hand over his mouth, chuckling. “We’re going to have another baby, Y/N.” Your eyes started to water when you heard him say that, out of pure excitement and joy. “It could be a girl this time, Jack will have a sister and-” The more he thought about it, the more he felt like crying. “I can’t even begin to express how happy I am right now.”
“We’re going to be insanely busy, you know that right?”
“Believe me, I know.” He chuckled. “But we’re going to be fine, we’re an awesome team and we’ve got a great family and great friends who will help us with anything we need. We’re going to be okay,” he assured you, pecking you on the lips. “I promise, everything’s going to be great.” He hugged you again and you smiled, hugging him back. “You’re okay with this, right?” He quizzed when he remembered not that long ago, the two of you’d agreed to wait. “I mean-” he gently pushed you away by the shoulders. “You’re not feeling overwhelmed or on the verge of a panic attack?” He asked, brushing your cheek with the pad of his thumb.
“No,” you assured him with a shake of your head. “I’m excited about this, I know we said we’d wait but- clearly, the universe doesn’t want us to. Ever since Jack heard that he might have a baby sister, he’s been so excited. He’s been putting aside his favorite toys to give to her whenever she comes along,” you placed your hand against your stomach. “And now she’s on her way.”
“Do you think it could be a girl this time?” He asked, placing his hand over yours. “I’ll love the child no matter the gender, but I would really like for our next child to be a girl.” He told you and you nodded in agreement. “I still can’t believe this, Y/N. We’re going-”
“Daddy, we need more popcorn.” Jack walked into your room with a cheeky grin; it was obvious he’d eaten it all. You both looked at him then back at each other nodding, it was time to break the news to the soon-to-be big brother. “What?” He quizzed, titling his head.
“Mama and I have some great news to tell you,” Chris pulled away from you to pick Jack up. “Do you know how you’ve been asking us about having a baby sister?” He asked Jack and Jack nodded, his eyes wide with excitement. “Well, buddy. Your baby sister is on her way.”
“Really?!” Jack gasped. “When does she get here? Is she going to spend Christmas with us?” You and Chris looked at each other, laughing. “Oh, Daddy! We’ve got to get her presents ready! I’m going to give her my Mickey Mouse hat and my favorite color pencils! Let me go, I need to go wrap them!” He tried to squirm out of his dad’s grip only to have Chris tighten it.
“Buddy,” Chris chuckled, “she’s not going to be here for another eight months.”
“Oh,” Jack’s shoulders slumped. “Well, I guess that gives me more time to prepare her gifts. Can she share a room with me when she gets here?” He asked you and Chris. “I’d love to share a room with my baby sister.”
“Sure, sweetheart.” You smiled and kissed his cheek. “You’re going to be such a great big brother, you know that?” Jack smiled as you rubbed his back. “And you,” you smiled at Chris, “you’re going to be as amazing with her as you already are with him.”
“I love you,” Chris wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you towards him and Jack. “And I love you,” you smiled and pecked him on the lips.
“And I love the both of you,” Jack pecked both yours and Chris’ cheek, making both of you smile.
With a child as adorable as Jack, you couldn’t wait to see how the next one was going to turn out. Whether the baby was going to be a girl, like you’d all hoped, or a boy, there was no doubt the baby was going to be a great addition to your lovely little family.
