But this is going to be hard because Bellamy and Clarke are so Extra about each other it’s ridiculous.
I mean there are SO MANY EXTRA MOMENTS
We’ve got THIS gem:
Bellamy sweety she was not going to drink from a poisoned cup like you didn’t need to be an Extra hoe and knock it out of her hand your feelings are showing
LITERALLY WHAT WAS THE POINT OF CHECKING HIS BANDAGE AGAIN CLARKE WHAT WAS THE POINT
there was no point she just wanted to touch bellamy’s beautiful hands and make a cute (dumb) joke
Don’t even talk to me about this fucking scene right here there was no reason for Bellamy to catch her NO REASON!
SHE IS JOGGING!!!
Girl can stop herself on her own but NOPE she HAD to run into Bellamy’s big and beautiful arms she just HAD to
tbh i would too
HE FEEDS HER THE FUCKING CHIP LIKE ???? SHE HAS HANDS ???? BUT NO HERE LEMME FEED IT TO YOU MYSELF BOO IT’LL BE GREAT, WOULD YOU LIKE SOME FONDUE WITH THAT? CHOCOLATE ??? STRAWBERRIES ??? I GOT U BABE
THIS SCENE MAKES ME LAUGH SO FUCKING HARD MR. EXTRA BELLAMY BLAKE LITERALLY CRASHED A VEHICLE BECAUSE HE WAS TOO BUSY STARING LOVINGLY AT CLARKE HEY BOB IS THIS WHAT YOU MEANT AT UNITY DAYS ABOUT BEING ANNOYED ABOUT THE SCRIPT SAYING “Bellamy stares loving at Clarke” BECAUSE YOU LITERALLY
BECAUSE OF IT
OH. MY. FUCKING. GOD.
(I WILL NEVER STOP SCREAMING ABOUT THIS SCENE)
Okay okay so those were some good scenes, but of all of them … the most Extra scene that is my FAVOURITE scene has to go to this one:
She literally THROWS herself at him. Like, that’s how happy she is to see him. I mean, compare this hug to her hug with Raven or - fuck - to her hug with Octavia, who she ALSO didn’t know was alive (and didn’t even ask her mom either???) She’s just like “oh hey octavia didn’t see you there, I thought you were dead but tbh i only ever really cared about your brother, it’s Chill tho”
SHE IS SO EXTRA ABOUT BELLAMY BLAKE OH MY GOD
This scene is just a really amazing scene because it’s so HAPPY and pure and beautiful. And it was a first in their relationship (first hug, it signalled the start of their dynamic in Season 2). So that’s why it’s my favourite Extra scene. Whether it’s the MOST Extra scene … that’s up for debate. But it’s definitely Extra, and it’s definitely amazing, so this is my answer :)
This book broke my heart, Everything was fine then it went to shit, then it was fine again and then it went to shit again, and then everything was fine, and I thought things were going to turn out really well, then everything went to ABSOLUTE SHIT. I’d give this book 5/5, because it was so jam-packed with so much action and different character and plot twists, whereas Lady Midnight was basically the Emma and Jules show.
I felt that Lady Midnight, though it was a good Book, wasn’t Cassie Clare’s best work. The first half failed to really draw me in, and I had to push to really get into the book. It was also just constant Emma and Jules, though I understand she was setting the scene and setting up their relationship, it just got a bit dull. The whole book was kind of a ‘meh’, but with Lord of Shadows, it was fast-paced right off the bat, with loads of plots and different POV’s and characters drawing me completely into the book. This book, in my opinion, was a huge jump from LM, in terms of success for me, personally.
I was getting a lot of asks on why I spoil myself for things, the reason is a) I can’t help it, and b) when something major happens in a book that I wasn’t expecting, I get really hyped up for a few days and can’t really concentrate on anything else. Sounds kinda weird, but spoiling myself works. Except some people gave me fake spoilers, so…
Anyway I’ve tried to organise my thoughts into sections, but it’s all a bit all over the place, here are my thoughts and theories!
[For a meta about Reservoir Dogs and Tarantino’s use of gay subtext, click here.]
I don’t want to be the person who ruins everyone’s fun, so I’m saving my one big criticism of this episode for last. This meta is completely positive, even saccharine, until the very last paragraph. Also, I’m borrowing one of my favourite AO3 tags as a title because, let’s face it, Crowley was the real hero of this episode and where the action was, and that’s perfectly okay and long overdue. Crowley’s been around for years now, and he’s gone through huge bouts of character development, and yet we still know next to nothing about him and he’s often treated like an afterthought, both by our heroes and by the writers. This episode finally (finally!) corrected that, because no matter how intriguing and plain beautiful everyone was, Crowley was magnificent - as I fully expected him to be.
After all, they’re good - but he’s Crowley.
Like anyone with eyes, I loved everything about this episode, and especially how it was filmed. I have to say - this is the first episode in a long time that actually had me in tenterhooks about a possible character death, because you never know, right? Theoretically, Crowley could die, and so could Cas. Theoretically. And also the music, did I mention the music? I think that scene of Cas crawling away from Ramiel and the shot of Ramiel stabbing him - that’s just become my favourite Supernatural scene ever, bar none. It was so powerful and dramatic and visually magnificent and that damn music - wow.
I adored that symbolism, because Cas’ been a Christ figure for a while now, and seeing him like that, on his back, defeated and stabbed by a lance - you can’t get more Golgotha than that. Beautiful stuff.
I also loved that this episode was, in a way - off-centre. Sam and Dean were there, of course, but the story was not focused around them. The real protagonist was the supernatural world itself - Cas, Crowley, Ramiel; even Lucifer, to me, was more present than he’s been in a while, what with this vague threat of his child hanging over the world, and him taunting Crowley and flashing his red eyes at this most undemonic demon in the very last scene. The truth is, I love everything about Sam and Dean, and that includes the incredibly talented actors who play them, but I feel the show could benefit greatly from approaching their story from a different perspective every once in a while. I’d love to know more about their childhood, for instance, or about this world of monsters and hunters around them; and a completely Outsider POV episode is, at this point, something I’d probably sell half my soul for.
Anyway - lately, this show reads like very good fanfiction, and considering how engaged, loving and talented this fandom is, this is high praise. I particularly appreciate the fact they’re going back to important plot points and filling them in with completely new details - after all, we’ve been wondering for years what’s up with demonic eyes, or how Crowley became king in the first place (or, at least, I know I did). This new class of demons appearing out of nowhere - creatures powerful enough to wield an archangel’s weapon - that’s incredible stuff. I’m guessing we’ll see more about them, and I can’t freaking wait.
So, yes - Ramiel was spot-on. Jerry Trimble managed just the right mixture of underwhelmingly normal and terrifyingly amoral - so much so I’m sort of sad we didn’t get to see more of this character, even if everything about him, including his death, was handled just right - there was no room for anything more.
My one slight criticism there would be the fizzling nature of Cas’ abilities. For instance, didn’t we establish that Cas can smell lies? So why couldn’t he guess Mary was hiding something? And what about demons’ true forms? I always assumed Cas could see that (was it ever stated in canon? it must have been), and I was therefore almost disappointed that Cas couldn’t recognize Ramiel for what he was. Maybe it can be explained away by him slowly becoming closer and closer to a human being - I don’t know. In any case, I’m truly appreciating how obsessed everyone seems to be with him lately. After years of taking angels for granted, we’ve got two characters in short succession fangirling over angels (in a creepy, murderous and definitely non-con way, but still) - and, yeah, I know that basically everyone spent the entirety of Supernatural pointing out how different and unique Cas is, and I’m grateful for that, but it’s also nice to get a reminder that angels are awesome (in the other sense of the word) in and of themselves.
(I’m still loving Mr Ketch, by the way. Aaaaaw.)
Let’s now come to our unsung hero: Mr Crowley.
Crowley was magnificent in all this. And we’ve now learned he never seriously planned to become King of Hell - my headcanon, which I’m considering confirmed, is that Crowley simply wants control. He’s been tortured for a century or more as some demon tore his human soul out of him, and he’s never putting himself in that position again, which is very sensible of him, and also very Scarlett O’Hara.
Second time out/back from seeing Beauty and the Beast **SPOILERS ABOUND**
(aka bear with me b/c this review is a week and a half late and I can actually comment on stuff I loved throughout it. It might end up being long af so I’m sorry in advance bc I talk about when everyone got cast too. This is probably filled with typos.)
PPS:I am the minority who loved it deeply, and don’t have nothing to complain about. Except a few words on the group of people who sat beside me tonight and would not shut up during Evermore and the transformation scene aka MY MOST FAVOURITE DISNEY KISS EVER)
So lets get down to it. I LOVED this movie the first time I saw it. As I have stated numerous times through tags. Ill be real here I was skeptical as hell about this being turned into a LA remake. But as the casting was announced my worries went away completely?
BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST WHAT A FABULOUS CAST! I don’t even know who to start with honestly? All of them ARE JUST SO GOOD???
We’ll just start with the most obvious choice (and the one who had the most flack after being cast)
And that is the absolute wonder and light of my life DAN FUCKING STEVENS
BECAUSE THIS GUY. OMG. ANYTHING HE DID IN THIS MOVIE JUST…BLEW. ME. THE. FUCK. AWAY??? And I’m just so grateful and forever indebted to him for bringing quite possibly the best reinterpretation of the Beast/Adam to life. Like honestly the Beast is my favourite character ever he has been since I was 5 and I just…NO AMOUNT OF WORDS COULD DESCRIBE IT. (actually I have TONS of words and i’ll get more into this later) but I’m moving on for now.
Emma Thompson I love Emma T so much I have since forever and she’s so charming and soft hearted as Mrs Potts. Say what you will about the accents used in this movie I loved that she was English….
And Luke Evans I knew about him prior to this and vaguely, through watching him in The Hobbit and that god awful movie version of the Three Musketeers (same can be said for Dan, b/c before I watched some of his other stuff I had only know him from Night at the Museum 3)
Luke brought such a great energy to this character and I loved how Gaston started out as an okay dude but slowly dissented into his villainy? The way he portrayed this was astounding b/c as soon as the script called for the change up he handled it with such ease? And wow I just love Gaston so much in this movie.
Josh Gad we gotta talk about FUCKING JOSH GAD I’m not getting into the knitty gritty of things since its not my place to comment on such but I LOVED HIM IN THIS ROLE SO MUCH MORE THAN I LOVED HIM IN FROZEN? He’s so hilarious. AND HIS LINES WERE A+++
He just brought so much classiness to LeFou and he just made him so likable? and the fact that HE FOUGHT TO KEEP IN THE SNOWMAN GAG FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSION. I honestly hope they give me all the deleted scenes from this movie.
FUCKING EWAN MCGREGOR AND SIR IAN MCKELLEN AS COGSWORTH AND LUMIERE I just WOW WHAT A GREAT ACTING COMBO (aka all ive ever wanted from the remains of my dull life.)
AND AUDRA MCDONALD AS GARDEROBE AND STANLEY ‘ACTUAL KING OF EVERYTHING HE IS IN’ TUCCI as a sassy piano THAT WAS LITERALLY CREATED FROM SCRATCH FOR HIM? (more on these two later as well because omg they are everything to me and stole my heart??)
AND KEVIN FUCKING KLINE omg I loved him so much in this movie just PERFECT honestly.
I’m trying to keep this short so I can move on to my next bunch of thoughts. And not just yap about the casting. (Bullet points listed below, bc I’m getting into the changes) And to begin:
THE SCENARY AND CGI IN THIS MOVIE WERE FUCKING ASTOUNDING? I DIED? IT WAS BEAUTIFUL, say what you want about what the beast looked like. Dan Stevens exhausted himself entirely for 2-3 months just to make the beast into a computer animated caricature. AND I LOVED THE ANIMATION ON THE CASTLE STAFF? I also really loved the backstories for everyone it just filled in so much that I found lacking in the original. Just everything that filled in all the plotholes were A++
THE PROLOGUE and it being narrated by the ENCHANTRESS.(Side note: I loved the technicalities and consequences with this new curse)
DAN STEVENS GRACING ME WITH HIS FAB TALENT AND NOT SAYING A THING DURING SAID PROLOGUE AND JUST LAUGHING EVILLY AND YET FLAWLESSLY GETTING THE POINT ACROSS THAT THE PRINCE BEFORE MEETING BELLE WAS AN ABSOLUTE PANSY ASS DICK? Also him in the black get up with the black swan make up?? a lookTM
THE CLOSE UPS OF GARDEROBE AND CADENZA AND THEIR LITTLE DOGGO FRU FRU BEFORE THE CASTLE IS CHANGED INTO OBJECTS?? THE FACT THAT FRU FRU IS THEIR DOG?
THAT WHOLE OPENING SEQUENCE IS INTENSE AS HELL
Omg when Gaston stepped on Belle’s cabbages THERE WERE LIKE 3-4 KIDS THAT GASPED. It made me smile omg.
When Maurice and Phillipe were heading out of town and in the woods heading to the castle. One child was like “aww look at the horsey” I mean…
WHEN MAURICE IS IN THE CASTLE AND MEETS CHIP everyone laughed like honestly I was blessed with actually being a a cinema room full of people that laughed and reacted to stuff b/c last week when I went there were crickets, some child mad an off hand comment later on in the movie when Beast invites Belle to dinner and he does the smileTM I kid you not I heard “look his tiny teeth” I love his tiny fangs so much hes just so awkwardly endearing altogether.
OKAY OKAY OKAY SO WHEN BELLE HEADS UP TO THE CASTLE TO FIND HER DADDO AND SHES AT THE CELL IM PRETTY SURE THEY PLAY THE SCORE TO EVERMORE? its like lowkey but I NOTICED IT AND IT WAS GLORIOUS.
all the songs in this movie and the additional lyrics woven into the film added 30 years to my life.
THE WHOLE “GASTON” NUMBER WAS FABULOUS AND EVERYTHING AND MORE ITS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL VERSION THAT WHOLE MOMENT WHEN THEY BREAK TO CLAP AND STOP ON THE TABLE AND THE FACT THAT THE SCORE FOR THAT BIT SOUNDS LIKE A CAVALRY CHARGE AND THE WHOLE “SAY IT AGAIN” BIT AFTER THE “I USE ANTLERS IN ALL OF MY DECORATING” LINE.
BUT LIKE THERE IS MORE BECAUSE OMG THEY GAVE COGSWORTH STUFF TO SING DURING “BE OUR GUEST” INSTEAD OF JUST “SOMETHING THERE”. LIKE THE ONLY OTHER TIME HE SINGS IS IN THE ORIGINAL DURING “HUMAN AGAIN” I love the flawless smooth transition from SIR IAN MCKELLEN belting out the COURSE BY COURSE bit of that verse and Ewan being like ONE BY ONE immediately after? honestly I always fist bump during that moment when I listen to the soundtrack. AND THE WHOLE NUMBER IN THE MOVIE IS JUST SOO GREAT. I love my crotchety old clock and dramatically extra candlestick. the best BROTP.
Ok, so the people I sat beside started laughing during little Adam’s part in Days In the Sun and omg I was off hand annoyed because it ruined my chance to start the water works even though I still cried.
BEAST TRASHING ON ROMEO AND JULIET WILL FOREVER BE ICONIC to me I LOVE WELL READ BEAST SO MUCH I’m tired of the ‘but I wish he would have stayed illiterate’ statements.
EVERYONE. AND WHEN I SAY EVERYONE I MEAN EVERYONE ERRUPTED INTO LAUGHTER WHEN BEAST HAULED THAT BIG ASS SNOWBALL AT BELLE’S HEAD.
ALSO any time Beast gave Belle his little smiles??? they were so pure and cute
So seeing this movie a second time the yellow dress discourse is quiet frankly ?? to me I loved it AND I LOVE THE FACT THAT DAN STEVENS MADE THE BEAST UTTERLY DISTRESSED OVER ASKING HER FOR A DANCE IN THE BALLROOM? (THAT WHOLE SEQUENCE IS SO FUCKING GORGEOUS)
LIKE…I JUST LOVE HOW MUCH LIFE AND PERSONALITY AND 3 DIMENSIONALISM HE GAVE HIM B/C I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THIS PORTRAYAL UNTIL IM DEAD AND IN THE GROUND.
Which brings me to the make up scene everyone laughed and I almost could not stop laughing at the scene change.
Emma Thompson’s version of Beauty and the Beast is so wonderful. I love it.
THE FIRST TIME I HEARD EVERMORE IN THE MOVIE I WAS STUNNED INTO SILENCE AND JUST DAN STEVENS AGAIN GRACING ME WITH SUCH RAW EMOTION AND TALENT. SIGH I JUST LOVE THAT WHOLE SEQUENCE, I WOULD HAVE LOVED IT EVEN MORE HAD I BEEN REALLY INTO THE SECOND TIME SEEING IT BUT ALAS THE PERSON BESIDE ME WAS LAUGHING AND I WAS JUST LIKE… RUDE. HONESTLY THOUGH THE PAIR OF PIPES DAN STEVENS HAS HE HAS SUCH A BEAUTFUL RANGE AND WHEN HE SINGS ANGELS DESCEND FROM HEAVEN, AND JUST THIS WHOLE FUCKING SONG GAVE ME THE LAARGEST EARGASM THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT. LIKE HONESTLY GOD BLESS ALAN MUSICAL GENIEUS KING MENKEN
Honestly everyone is at war against whether Josh or Dan’s version is better and I just prefer Dan’s version so much. I found Josh Groban’s version too slow even though he sings like an angel too.
tt.tt THE MOB SONG and the castle staff going up in arms was always my fave in the 90s version. And it did not disappoint.
Bullet points are done I am heading into paragraph summarizing my thoughts on the last 30-40 minutes. BECAUSE THIS SHIT WAS UNREAL, and HARROWINGLY DARK. AND I LOVED THESE CHANGES FROM THE ORIGINAL.
THE WHOLE CASTLE TURRET CHASE SCENE WAS SO FUCKING GOOD I HAD MULTIPLE HEAR TATTACKSTHE FACT THEY SWITCHED UP THE HUNTING KNIFE AND REPLACED IT WITH A PISTOL that moment when the Beast gets shot oh god.
Like when Belle comes back and sees the Beast and he literally SHOUTS OUT HER NAME I am crying?? and deceased?? and then he gets shot 2 more times honestly this was equally amazing and heartbreakingly brutal.
And let me tell the whole concept of the castle actually breaking apart as the petals fall, that is just such a neat spin and I love it.
So like I said I found the twist with the curse fascinating because in the original the only thing it focused largely on was the Beast, Mrs Potts, Plumette, Lumiere , Cogsworth and FruFru. I LOVE THAT THE MOVIE CEMENTED AND ROUNDED ALL OF THE CASTLE STAFF AND GAVE THEM A LARGER SPOLIGHT THAN IN THE ORIGINAL LIKE THE CASTLE STAFF MAKES UP HALF OF THE CAST/CHARACTERS FOR THIS MOVIE. For the past week and a half people have said why was the inanimate scene so long and drawn out? Because the castle staff are the greatest and the only family the Beast has besides Belle that’s why… the end. Also I ship the hell out of Cadenza & Garderobe, Plumette and Lumiere AND MR AND MRS POTTS OMG.
THE WHOLE INANIMATION SEQUENCE HAD MY ENTIRE SOUL IN SHREADS, IVE ??? NEVER?? CRIED??? SO MUCH IN MY LIFE??? LIKE LUMIERE HOLDING PLUMETTE IN HIS ARMS AND SETTING HER DOWN GENTLY AND MRS POTTS NOT BEING ABLE TO GET TO CHIP AND CHIP ALMOST FUCKING BREAKING BUT THE COATHANGER CATCHING HIM THE LAST SECOND AS HIS SAUCER BREAKS? CADENZA AND GADEROBE REUNITING AND HER TELLING HIM THAT HE IS BRAVE JUST BEFORE SHE FADES AWAY AND HIM BEGGING HER NOT TO LEAVE HIM?? I MEAN THAT IS THE TEXTBOOK DEFINIITION OF PURE AND UTTER DEVOTION RIGHT THERE FRIENDS.THE SADDEST THING ABOUT THEIR INANIMATION SCENE IS THE FACT THAT THEIR DOGGO FRU FRU BECOMES INANIMATE BETWEEN THEM. COGSWORTH AND LUMIERE SAYING GOODBYE. NEED I SAY MORE.
BUT THEN THE TRANSFORMATION SCENE HAPPENED AND I COULD NOT BREATHE I LOVEED HOW THEY FILMED THIS SCENE AND HOW EMMA AND DAN PLAYED THIS SCENE. NEVER IN MY LIFE WILL I LOVE ANYTHING AS MUCH AS I LOVE THIS SCENE.
Everyone is like “well why didn’t they say anything?”
I LOVED that HE DID NOT NEED TO SAY ‘BELLE, ITS ME?”
this iconic masterly filmed sequence only needed to be filmed with sheer BODY LANGUAGE, VISUAL EXPRESSIONS AND EMOTIONS COMING FROM BOTH DAN AND EMMA AND I JUST AM ASTOUNDED? EVERYTHING THEY FELT COULD BE SEEN BY THE AUDIENCE I FELT THAT SHIT DEEP IN MY SOUL AND IVE ANALYZED EVERYTHING LEADING UP TO THE KISS. FROM THEIR LOOKS OF DAZED WONDERMENT AFTER BEAST TURNS BACK INTO A HUMAN, AND HIS LITTLE HUFF OF RELIEF AFTER HE INTIALLY TURNS AROUND AND FACES EMMA, TO DAN’S HEAVY BREATHING, BELLE PLAYING WITH HIS HAIR AND HIM THREADING HIS FINGERS THROUGH HERS IN TURN? THE FACE TOUCH AS SHE IS LOOKING FOR ANY SIGN THAT THIS IS INFACT THAT GUY SHE LOVES?? (HONEST TO GOD THAT SHOT OF DAN HE IS ALREADY A BEAUTFUL GUY BUT HOLY HELL HE LOOKED SO GOOD IN THIS SCENE) THE CLOSE UP SHOT OF HIS EYES. HER RELIEVED LAUGH AND THE IMMENSE GENTLE CAUTION BETWEEN THEM JUST BEFORE THEY KISS AND THAT GIANT ASS INHALE DAN TAKES AS SOON AS THEY MAKE CONTACT ALSO MENTIONING THE FACT THAT ONCE THEY DO KISS HER HAND MOVES FROM HIS CHEST TO HIS WAIST.
THIS WHOLE SCENE IS LITERALLY THE LIVING EMBODIMENT OF THE PATRICK STEWART ACTING GIF
I LOVE THIS KISS SO MUCH HONESTLY ITS MY FAVOURITE DISNEY KISS.
The best was when they all became human again and reunited and were left with parting gifts from the curse. I laughed out loud when they showed Stanley Tucci with no teeth.
UGH AND THE LAST SCENE WITH CADENZA BEING SO FUCKING HAPPY AND SMILING AS THE WIFEY IS SINGING again.
EMMA AND AUDRA singing the final number omg the whole coronation dance scene was everything.
AND JUST THIS WHOLE MOVIE IS FABULOUS AND I NEEDED THE DVD TO BE RELEASED YESTERDAY.
It was the last episode of the season, and I can say I’m utterly satisfied. I was prepared for the worst, thinking they wouldn’t have the time to solve everything, but they did and they did it perfectly. I’m so proud.
There are tons of people who are analyzing this episode better than I could so I’m not going to bore you with how good it was. But I am venting out about TWO of my ultimate favourite aspects of it:
The hurt!Magnus moment
People who know me by now are fully aware I love this trope in fanfiction. Sometimes, I just need Magnus to have some kind of problem and Alec being there to help and reassure him (for the positivity of going through things together). THAT trio scene, with Magnus closing the rift and collapsing to the ground, with Alec rushing towards him, was the epitome of all I ever wanted. It was so well done, not too dramatic but not immediately dismissed either. It even managed to pull them closer, emotionally AND physically. It was fantastic.
Vulnerable!Magnus (I know, I know, my biasness is showing)
I am sorry if some people didn’t understand Magnus’s behaviour in the previous episodes, or why he reacts in certain ways when Alec confesses his love. To me, Harry Shum Jr. only demonstrates, every single time, how he completely understands every single aspects of Magnus Bane. It’s amazing the journey this character has gone through during a SINGLE episode. It starts with him avoiding the Maia issue, still trying somehow to keep the alliance with the Seelies together, because otherwise it would mean go back to the Shadowhunters (and ultimately, to Alec). It continues with the saltiness we love during that “door” scene with Alec, where he tries, AGAIN, to push him away to avoid getting hurt one more time. When he enters the Institute, if you look closely, he clearly avoids looking at Alec when ALEC looks his way. It seems he’s still not ready to face him and his feelings; Magnus is still hiding behind his
“angry” façade. Then, when he understands how dangerous the situation is, he changes and he goes full business with the “What have you got” line. It’s like he finally gets he needs to put his private matters aside and just concentrate on solving the situation.
From that moment on, Magnus slowly goes back to his “old” season 2A self, mainly because working with Alec and being in direct contact with him for an extensive amount of time help him realize how the “fights” (Alec’s words, look at Magnus’s face when he says it) were taking a toll on him as well (hence, the “Don’t apologize” answer). Worrying about each other was the perfect plotline to solve things between them.
That whole party scene before their “talk” was even more amazing. Look at the details. Magnus is away from everyone (again, ALONE) drinking to heal his soul. The moment Alec finds him he keeps on rambling and babbling about everything he did but, more importantly, about nothing serious (look at Alec’s face though, how he’s pleased to hear the other man talking about everything he loves. Matt did an amazing job: it was like Alec missed Magnus’s soft voice so much, talking to HIM about all sort of things). Magnus was clearly avoiding the “talk”. When Alec suggests they need to discuss, Magnus’s eyes literally change (how the hell can you do that though, Harry) and he goes in full whisper “Yes”. That is scared Magnus talking. Let’s face it, he was scared. He was scared of facing Alec and breaking up for good, of facing his own feelings and facing Alec’s as well.
When they are in the alley, his body language says it all: he’s stiff and puts his arms around himself to protect him. If you look closely again (details, details), when Alec is in front of him, giving his back, Magnus looks around to gather his thoughts and takes a huge breath. The moment Alec turns around and looks at him, Magnus straights his back and puts his “everything is okay” mask on. He can’t start the conversation, however, and he’s not the one leading it: it’s Alec. Magnus his sure of what he feels for the other man and he knows where he stands in their relationship. Throughout the episode he manages to understand Alec’s position and feelings as well, to finally understand that Alec has apologized enough and there’s no need for more (”Don’t apologize”) and that everything about the Soul Sword was “in the past”. Magnus should have continued the talk from there on but he can’t and he waits for Alec to go on. Because, once again, he’s scared of what is going on and he needs Alec to tell him clearly. And Alec does it. He goes full confession time. Again, look at Magnus’s face when Alec says he can’t live without him, the way his eyes immediately search for Alec’s face. He’s surprised. That is the same surprise he showed during 2x10 when Alec said he loved him. It’s because none of his lovers were so straightforward with their feelings, nor the depth of their love was as big as Alec’s. Magnus had many heartbreaks and hurt moments in the past, never forget. But we know Alec always manages to surprise Magnus, and it is a good thing, because Magnus deserves all the pure love he can get.
And yes, one day I’m going to go full “Harry’s acting” meta. It’s going to be a huge babble of feels, I warn you.
What is your favorite non-Austen period novel? Movie?
Okay I’m gonna do a rundown of all my favourites because making me pick one is just mean. (Also at one point in my notes on the following books and films I just wrote “Bagels” and I can’t for the life of me think what I might have meant or autocorrected that from. Maybe a shopping list started to take form. I don’t know.)
(If the film Miss Austen Regrets and book Longbourn by Jo Baker count as non-Austen then include them.)
Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India - 2001 (Sports! High stakes! Sticking it to the Colonial Man!)
Mozart’s Sister - 2010 (Beautiful music! Gorgeous androgyny! GIRLS CAST TO PLAY THEIR ACTUAL AGE AND NOT SOME 20-SOMETHING PRETENDING TO BE FOURTEEN!)
Possession - 2002 (I’ve tried the novel, and A.S. Byatt has some beautiful prose but her structures sometimes do my head in, so never finished it. Ignore Paltrow as best you can and enjoy lush Victorian Gothic mystery and the ending is one of the most poignant things I’ve ever been pleasantly surprised with on film, and it leaves you wondering about many, many things…)
Jodhaa Akbar - 2008 (You could put Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the worst commercial ever made and I would watch it. Costumes, scenery, and, as a friend once put it “I’m not sure how they did it, but they just had a sex scene without any sex.” Bravo.)
Water - 2005 (Deepa Mehta is such a fantastic filmmaker and I loved this whole trilogy but Water is my favourite.)
Elizabeth - 1998 & Elizabeth: The Golden Age - 2007 (The costumes! The caMERA ANGLES!!! The compli-fucking-cated mess that is Elizabeth I.)
[Okay Tumblr won’t let me embed any more trailers, but those ones are easy to find, they’re out there.]
Vatel - 2000 (Any foodie who is also a fan of The Sun King and his era will dig this one. A great score, baddie Tim Roth.)
Alternatively, in the same era: A Little Chaos - 2015. Storyline is a little weak, but it’s so beautiful and the cast is great and the M U S I C. Kate Winslet. Alan Rickman. Helen McCrory. STANLEY TUCCI.)
Also: they’re not films, but TV shows - honourable mentions to the Spanish series Gran Hotel. It’s like a good version of Downton Abbey, only sorta on crack and with a tonne more murder mysteries; and while I have some Issues with its so-called hero and some comparatively weirdo plot-points in S3, overall, it’s fantastic and I’m obssessed. Please don’t mix it up with the Italian re-make which looks horrible in every way. Like, main actors dressed in a poorly-sewn-table-cloth-bad.
And shout-out to the new CBC/Netflix series Anne. I will defend this show to the DEATH, alright? They’ve gone bolder and fresher and have managed to involve period realism in a moving way while retaining the sunshine-and-pinafores element that so many people love about L.M. Montgomery’s work. There’s heaps of women with production credits, and I think it shows. Geraldine James is already my favourite Marilla after one episode, and I feel like R.H. Thompson (HEY JASPER DALE HEEEEY!) and Amybeth McNulty are likely going to become my favourite Matthew and Anne, too. People have complained about this series going off-book and in particular some have condemned it sight-unseen because the writers/directors are putting a feminist spin on it and OH GOD THEY SAID FEMINIST QUICK WE GOTTA SET EVERYTHING ON FIRE BECAUSE CHILDHOOD IS RUINED, but honestly it’s just perky and gorgeous and scrappy and nobody can tell me to my face that Kevin Sullivan didn’t go all the fucking way off-book from the very beginning so I am not gonna sit here and insist that the Megan Fallows Anne of Green Gables was perfection which could never be improved upon because that’s just a plain lie. It was nice and it has its place but it’s time for some new blood. (And NOT the telefilms they’ve also come out with recently with Martin Sheen, bless his heart, but they took a brunette child actor and dumped an atrociously stark box of red hair-dye on her before drawing on her freckles and then telling her to please play everything theatrically to the back of the house even though there is a camera ten inches from her face.) I am HERE FOR ANNE. RIDE OR DIE.
AND NOW, FOR BOOKS!
After that you might assume my L.M. Montgomery recommendation would be Anne of Green Gables and sure I won’t say DON’T read them, but for my money the Emily of New Moon trilogy is more my jam and I wish to God and Netflix in all my prayers that there might someday be a decent adaptation of them.
I was really into Cassandra Clark’s Abbess of Meaux mystery series for a time, but then things went a bit pear-shaped in what I think was the fourth(?) book and everything was OOC and honestly I haven’t caught up on the later books after that and they seem to be self-published now but I am a sucker for nuns and mysteries so I’ll probably get back into it when I have time.
The Princess Priscilla’s Fortnight and The Solitary Summer by Elizabeth von Arnim. Vacation-reads! Beautiful prose, some wry wit, and fun hijinks. If you’ve ever wanted to run away and live in an isolated cottage in the wilderness for a little while, these are for you. [ETA: I recently got my hands on a copy of The Jasmine Farm so THANK YOU to one of you who recommended it I am loving it so far only I don’t see the appeal in Andrew so wtf Terry you can do better.]
Edward Rutherfurd’s geographical history novels–Sarum is the classic to start with, but the others I’ve read are very good, too. (London, New York, and I’m now working my way through a first-edition of Russka.)
Amy Levy. A M Y L E V Y. Criminally under-recognized Jewish Victorian novelist and poet. Novellas Ruben Sachs and The Romance of a Shop. (RS a beautiful and bittersweet story about the conflicts between love, identity, and expectations, and some would say a response to George Eliot’s Daniel Deronda. TRoaS reading a bit like a less treacle-sweet variation on Little Women, where four sisters try to make their way in the world by setting up their own photography studio in late 19th century London.)
The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgkin Burnett. Colonialist racism appears in this one, so be warned. Still the book is a THOUSAND times better than the utterly dreadful adaptation known as The Making of a Lady. Jane is better, Emily is better, Walderhurst is better, pretty much EVERYONE IS BETTER. The pacing is better. The plotting and suspense make actual sense.
The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy. A classic, and the grand-daddy of every secret-identity superhero.
The Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. Like, it makes me MAD how good these books are.
And last but not least, a non-fiction selection in Vere Hodgson’s WWII diaries: Few Eggs and No Oranges. Nothing else has ever brought the experience of living (or trying to) under the shadow of the bombs and the threat of invasion quite like these diaries. Fascinating details, engagingly written, and at times a stark reminder that the Allied victory we take for granted in our history could by no means be counted on by the millions who dwelt in daily uncertainty.
as long as i live i will never get over the aaron/robert goodbye scene before aaron is sent down. like they are absolutely desperate to be as close to each other as possible and robert saying i love you with his eyes closed because he can’t bear the thought of losing aaron, and aaron just staring at robert trying to memorise every inch of his face because he doesn’t know when he’ll see him again and oh my god don’t get me started on roberts face when they kiss??? it’s like he’s trying not to cry and trying to memorise exactly how it feels to kiss aaron all at once?
they’re just clinging to each other in that scene because they know they’re about to lose each other for god knows how long and it’s heartbreaking how in love they are in that very moment
it’s definitely in my top five favourite robron scenes ever i actually live for it
To all the wonderful Aria is A theorists that I spent years following with fascination, you guys came up with some amazing theories that no matter what happens in this shitty finale, you guys will always be my favourite. <3 I think if you had written the show, I am sure Aria is A could have been the most amazing reveal EVER. I am heart broken after Marlene’s interview where she said Aria does not have an MPD. Why would they have put so many clues about that in her scenes for it to mean nothing? I am just so upset… and I know they are just theories and PLL is just a show, but I spent an emberassing amount of time obsessing over Aria is A theorists and waited anxiously for my favourite bloggers to post new things. I am saying goodbye because I lost complete faith. But I also want to awknowledge everyone who ever did theories on all the characters, you were all seriously soooo convincing. I am amazed by the level of intelligence I was reading, it’s too bad the actual writers clearly never had a master piece ending in mind. I love you pll community! I will miss you all.
Do you know what really stands out for me in episode 7.03? That scene where cersei is tormenting elaria sand and she's telling her how she felt when myrcella was killed and she says in a tone of voice I don't think I've ever heard her uses before "why did you do that?" almost like a child who's lost something very important to them. The word that comes to mind when I think about this scene is haunting.
Absolutely. That was seriously one of my top favourite scenes of the entire season thus far. The vulnerability, the emotion… It was just perfection. Lena did such an amazing job of executing it in a scene that was so tense with Cersei’s rage and bloodlust. The fact that she can go from planning to murder Ellaria’s daughter to being so heartbroken over her own daughter’s death then back again is superb acting, dialogue and directing.
Getting involved in all the lovely Thorki Fic Recs that are going around today!
I assume a lot of new fics will get recs today, so I’ve included a few slightly older fics that I love.

I can’t stop thinking about Lucien. I just think he’s my favourite male ‘cause ever since book 1 I had a soft spot for any scene involving him and now, after ACOWAR, wow… Totally lost it. I hope we’ll see tons of him in the next books. And in the meantime, you know how his hair is clearly described as being long enough to be braided? Good. Now think of Lucien in a man bun while training ‘cause I have and it’s very good thinking.
my favourite thing is that reiner is like canonically bisexual but loves bertholdt more than anyone or anything. like the way he protects him and always tries to do whats best for him even if betholdt thinks otherwise. like he told bertholdt to tell annie about his feelings because he knows hat bertholdt has a crush on her but with every scene where he’s staring at anniereiner has this sour jealous lok on his face but he’ll ever tell bertholdt because he thinks that he loves annie and imwsedrftyguhijkl,
can you talk about your fave alec moments from 2a?
Oh man. There’s so much, there’s basically too much – I didn’t actually think there
was that much, but wow there’s actually so much because literally every Alec
scene is my favourite scene as I am a simple girl with easy standards. But I’ll try to, like, not talk for six thousand years. Let’s
see how it goes lmao.
#1 Best Top Alec Scene of All Time
Ever: Alec v. Aldertree, 2x09
Oh man. Oh man. This was…this was such a gift…I
can’t even describe how I feel about it adequately. Like our boy is a saltine
at the best of times, but that aspect is sort of is tempered by his forced
respect for authority (which is a whole nother conversation which I’ve talked
about a few times) – so against an authority figure, in the past, Alec has been
sort of passive-aggressive (for lack of a better word); like in 1x09, he stares
down Lydia and hands the folder to his mom against her command, and in 2x01 he
still takes Lydia’s dismissal instead of contesting it. So I like this scene
especially because you see him coming out of that, but it’s not OOC or
anything, firstly because shedding his adherence to authority has been a part
of his arc since 1x12 (and was reinforced in 2x08 with his conflicts with his
mother), and also – and more significantly imo – it’s because of his family.
So that “I’ll do anything for my sister,” authoritative,
salty as fuck Alec just taking his Institute back that this
scene brought out is my favouriteever Alec and I hope he’s here to stay.
(Actually, I hope we see him struggle a bit more with his identity as a
Shadowhunter, his duty to the Clave and his parents and following orders and
the like, since that was a key part of his character in S1 and it would be so
cool to see him actually deal with that, but that’s a whole nother thing as
well). And leader!Alec has always been my favourite Alec, and there’s nothing
more I want to see than Alec being the head of the institute like he deserves
to be (seeing a struggle for power between Alec/the Lightwoods/Aldertree would
be SO NICE too, and I’m actually really interested to see how power is going to
shift hands in 2B in the Institute. Maybe seeing Alec have to navigate the
messy quagmire of Shadowhunter/Clave politics which puts him at odds with the
others who don’t get how complicated it is because the consequences of any insubordination
are going to fall on his shoulders as the leader sorta like how it was in S1. And I’m also kind of interested to see how Alec navigates the whole “preserving the Lightwood honour” thing from last year - how much he values that now compared to the huge lengths he went to for the Lightwood name in the first season. That would be so cool).
honestly, that smirk and that salty little pat on Aldertree’s shoulder ended my
life. It ended my life.
I just put the rest in chronological order but i just had to mention this one first lol so here we goooo
I have far too many notes, and I need to unload my brain when I get home to my script, but just a few observations, several of them controversial.
Samuel may already be my favourite Scorpius. He teared up in the library scene and absolutely destroyed me. He’s so different to either James or Anthony, and I love it. I need to work on trying to describe his voice, but it’s nothing close to what we’ve heard before.
Theo showed glimpses, particularly in the hospital wing scene and in the library scene, of what he’ll be capable of when he relaxes. I’m optimistic. He’s already warming up.
Jamie made a couple of choices that I actually really preferred to Jamie P’s. I really like him. He’s not shouty or angry or explosive, but he’s great. And he clearly loves his son.
James was so commanding at the start of the duel scene. It was amazing. Also my favourite tiny detail of the night was that when the boys come back from the first task, when everyone walks off, Samuel waited and walked next to James. Scorpius loves his dad so much.
Theo and Samuel just put their arms round each other at unnecessary moments. Like when they’re running off after the Expelliarmus scene.
I loved how Emma said ‘saved by the door’. With Poppy it always felt like she was saying she was saved from the conversation, but with Emma it was definitely a 'we’ll talk about this later’ threat to Harry.
Rakie and Thomas’s scene on the staircases in the second timeline was my favourite Romione moment ever. Wow.
April might actually be a better Myrtle than Annabel. I said it. And I’m sticking with it. She was absolutely mind blowing.
The cast managed to destroy the set already. They drove both staircases into the pillars in the front wings and there was a loud bang and things fell off. Four days of tech rehearsals.
The pacing of this cast is far far far slower than the old cast. They finished ten minutes late and I missed my train because of it. But they were also inconsistent cause they sped up considerably towards the end. We walked past Sonia and Jack discussing notes at the end, and they were saying exactly the same as us. We’ve seen this play too many times…
Mackley and Josh still managed to hug in the first task scene, and Mackley promised Fleur a Hufflepuff hug. He’s a Hufflepuff now omg! The originals have been whipping the new cast into a frenzy cause the first task scene was wild. Also, instead of 'go go crazy Krum’ we now have 'I love Krum, you love Krum, Krum’s the one for everyone’.
This is a skeleton of the stuff I’ve been thinking about. This recap is going to be wild. I thought I was going off writing recaps but actually I just had nothing left to say about the old cast. I have about a billion things to see in regards to this one, and I fully intend to do so. Watch this space.
like sinking, like drowning, like dissolving into the radiance of Rin’s sun
commission for wonderful airin @icecreambat, who wanted me to draw my favourite scene from a fic of hers. it’s called wind waves and it’s honestly one of the most stunning fics i’ve ever read - not just in free! fandom but like. ever.
i drew two scenes (from chapters 5 and 1 respectively) instead of one because: a.) choosing just one when i have like a whole list of fav ww moments was TORTURE; b.) the second can be considered a bonus, an expression of gratitude for creating such an immensely beautiful story; c.) eh, why the hell not.
a little about my choice of scene(s) to draw. the hug + spilled tea moment from chapter 5 is one of the most emotionally charged scenes for me. it’s exactly that kind of scene that makes you forget to breathe for a few moments, that makes you feel a little dizzy and lightheaded in a good way, in the best way possible. it was also the first scene i had a very vivid image of in my head, apart from the opening scene from chapter 1 which made me fall in love with this story from the very beginning and which i ended up drawing too as a little bonus.
if i could, i’d write an entire essay about wind waves but since i’m absolutely no good when it comes to words, i can only hope that these drawings did the job instead.
thank you for being such a gem, airin! it was a great pleasure and an honour illustrating wind waves. good luck with ocean ones 🌊🌊🌊
A little late but here is a ramble about my thoughts I had for a while.
It’s really weird but ever since my friend made me watch Voltron, I shipped Klance immediately! That “I cradled you in my arms” moment killed me. Every day before going to work and after coming from work, I would always look at Klance in tumblr. Saved it in my favourites. “These two are super cute! Like that scene where their foreheads were touching, they should just kiss!!” When Keith teases Lance after getting his Lion back was great! And when season 2 came, that pool scene was so great! They were even locking arms, OMG!! They need to be canon! Like Korrasami! They are so perfect together! Opposite pieces to a whole!
I shipped Klance wholly while shipping Sheith on the side. I’ve never seen shipping hate. That was until I finished season 2 and was so touched with the Sheith scenes. I went on the Sheith tag more, and saw people posting about fans attacking a VA in social media because of Sheith, a “fictional” ship…calling people pedophiles, and spreading hate. Who has the time to question someone’s morals about a fictional show, where there’s not even a shred of evidence about their age. We’re not even sure if Pidge is as young as she is. I’m 24 but I get mistaken for a minor all the time. I’ve heard that some of the antis were Klance shippers but I didn’t believe them. I believed we can ship what we want and respect others’ ship. But as often as I went to the Sheith tag, artists and authors were sharing the bad comments they get in their question boxes and I’m just…why? If I don’t like something I avoid it. Don’t attack those who are wonderfully contributing to a ship they like for others’ happiness.
Somehow, after that I don’t know when but I came more often to the Sheith tag than Klance. Everyone was very nice and lots of great art was passed around. Then that post where they replaced Shiro with Lance in Sheith scenes, saying “now it’s romantic”, crushed my trust in Klance. It was their moment! Their hug! Why? Just Why?
I re-watched Voltron from season 1 and now…I switched my main ship to Sheith, while shipping Klance on the side. They did have chemistry! My mind just quickly jumped on the Klance wagon because now I remember my friend saying it was the popular ship as we watched it. I still ship it, but not as much as I did when I started the show.
DW has said they already know where they are going with this. If the planned end game is the popular ship from the beginning, then okay. But if they have to change whatever plans they had before Klance became a major hit, just to appease the salty fans…then no. I want them to do what they had decided on when they started this project.
I will accept anything they give me! Those Kallura moments were also unexpected but I loved them soooo much. That’s one of the things I liked about Korrasami! It popped out of nowhere!
I wanna start off with saying, I hate binge watching shows. There’s no chance for episode by episode discussion, theorisation or anything and no time to spread out my gifmaking lols.
Another issue with binge watching (for me at least) is that i forget so many things lmao
Anyways, I really enjoyed this drama though - it wasn’t perfect, and it was in no way logical, but it was fun and cute.
All the characters have a proper role in the story, and their own character arc/backstory (yes even the car, and i will never get over it), which is nice because i feel like you don’t get a lot of that in these kinds of dramas.
The main couple are hilarious - and morally grey backstabbers… to an extent lmao
Whilst its overall quite nonsensical, I won’t deny that its my favourite use of time travel in a sageuk ever. I said it, and I’m not taking it back.
You could literally ship any of the main 5 together (aka theres enough development for any of the couples to work imo)
OT5 is super cute throughout
I am however, super mad about the wrist grabbing, especially since there is even a scene where it ends with a bruise :/ and then its just brushed over…
… yeah i’m literally drawing a blank because i binge watched it, and so my thought process whilst watching the eps has gone (this is why people live blog i guess haha)
