just a book club

My collection of art journal type books (as of December 2016) is officially too big for a stack, they had to be laid down.

Y'all, my first book is being released tomorrow by @workmanpub. I’m overwhelmed by all of the nice shit that’s been written about it, not to mention the awesome write-ups in print mags like @elleusa, @bust_magazine, @healthmagazine, & @familycirclemag. Also, apparently there’s already a book club reading it this month and I’m just sitting over here like 😳📕😳📕

Tomorrow’s Bull City tour kick-off at @motorcomh c/o @regulatorbookshop is allegedly sold out, but y'all know how I feel about party crashers- just show up and you’ll probably get in- at the very least you can grab a beer or some sesame udon salad at @partsandlabour. Tell ‘em Jessamyn sent you & TIP YOUR BARTENDER PLEASE AND THANK YOU. After that, it’s Nashville’s @parnassusbooks on Wednesday, Raleigh’s @quailridgebooks on Thursday, and a yoga class at #yogafestnc on Saturday- all the info’s on jessamynstanley.com/tour (link is in the header). Anyway, y'all are the best & I’m so excited to meet you. Also USE THE #EVERYBODYYOGA SNAPCHAT FILTER WHEN YOU’RE AT THE EVENTS- it features a half-naked bitmoji Jessamyn doing yoga soooo. Yeah. Let’s spread that shit.

You can buy “Every Body Yoga” anywhere fine books are sold. I have waited a long time to say those words. Also, this shameless promotion is inspired by the boys of @thecrookedmedia.

- Going on your first date, Alex takes you to a botanical garden where it’s so aesthetically pleasing all you do all day is take pictures and Instagram them, you eventually stop to sit down and have a picnic and actually enjoy the date.

one of these tiny au things for jeon wonwoo (ma man ma main man) please!!!!! THANK U so much i <3 your blog im

  • book club!au with wonwoo
  • he always shows up in the most comfy oversized cardigan and glasses slipping down his nose and tired, black circles under his eyes which you think are really r e a l l y adorable
  • doesn’t really comment that much during discussions, just listens to what others says and nods
  • got asked out by like every member at least once and he’s used the same excuse which is “im sorry, but my friend mingyu asked me to tutor him that day-”
  • fell asleep during one meeting so you carefully poked his side with your pencil so he’d wake up and not get called out
  • was staring at someone while they were talking and the person was like ‘i-uh-um-uh wonwoo are you mad at me????” and he perked up like huh what no why
  • and the person was like,,,,,,,,,sorry it just felt like you were burrowing a hole through me with that look on your face
  • wonwoo getting embarrassed: sorry,,,,,it’s my default,,,,
  • you’re reading one of your favorite books in the club and apparently it’s just come out as a film and everyone is super excited to go and see it
  • but when you all do, you end up hating it and the only other person who agrees with you on how shitty the producer did is,,,,,wonwoo
  • and you’re like “i don’t get how he ruined,,,,,,such an amazing piece of literature” and wonwoo adjusts his glasses and shrugs and is like “all movies,,,,,don’t really ever do justice to the book do they?” and you’re like RiGht,,,,,,,it’s just you can’t get 500 pages into two hours
  • and you and wonwoo both admit that harry potter flopped in comparison to the books
  • and somehow you get to chatting more and you leave the group at the movie theater to find a cafe and wonwoo is showing you his reading list on his phone and you’re telling him about a new author you’ve just discovered
  • and he moves his seat so you’re basically shoulder to shoulder, huddled close with your cold cups of coffee
  • and ,,,,, to everyone you look like a couple ,,,,, you guys just don’t notice it hehe
  • but when you look up and see wonwoo’s eyes through his frames, you turn a bit pink and stutter over what you’re saying and he fiddles with his fingers because your eyes met,,,,
  • and when you both decide to go wonwoo shyly asks if you’d like to give him your number,,,,,,to talk about books you know,,,,,,,and you gladly give it
  • and you’re both smiling to yourselves as you walk in opposite directions,,,,,,,,
  • the bookclub demands to know how your first date went the next meeting and you and wonwoo both melt at the word date LOL

Some of you know that Mommy has started a book club with her friends. I decided to join to add some variety to my literary diet [I can only read ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ so many times]. Unfortunately, the book the group is reading consists of mostly pictures and its taking mommy over 3 weeks to finish it. I’m leaving the book club and just going to read ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ for the third time.

ATHENS, Ga. - It was in the best seller section of a Barnes & Noble in this college town that Kathy Rackley found a novel story of her own - a young man by the name of Malcolm Mitchell.

“I mean a chance encounter in a bookstore, how wonderful is that?” said Kathy. She had no idea who Mitchell was. “None whatsoever.”

And Malcolm didn’t tell her. “I knew they were going to find out,” Mitchell said. “But I wasn’t going to say it.”

Fact is, Rackley may have been the only one in Athens who didn’t know the name Malcolm Mitchell. Number 26 for the University of Georgia Bulldogs was one of the top recruits in the country a few years ago. He’s Georgia royalty.

And presumably, if Rackley had known that, she wouldn’t have stood in that Barnes & Noble talking his ear off about the book club she had just joined.

“I mean he like stepped back and he said ‘You did? You did?’ and he said, 'Can I join your book club?’” Rackley recalled.

“And I said, 'I don’t know if you want to join mine. We’re all 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old women.’”

But Mitchell was undeterred. So now, one of the top wide-receivers in the country has been meeting monthly with his book club lady friends.

He’s the only man, and the youngest by a generation – but Mitchell doesn’t care. Nor does he care what anyone thinks.

“Somebody called me a nerd. That’s not a word that I’m used to hearing,” he said. But he’s more than okay with the label. “I was proud of it… It’s like a badge of honor to me, knowing where I came from.”

Mitchell confessed that when he started college he could only read at about a junior high level, and it bothered him. So he started putting as much effort into his reading game as his football game.

Every free moment, he had a book in his hand. He’s now reading things he never dreamed he could, and although some of the book club selections he would never pick himself, Mitchell seems to enjoy them all.

After everything he’s accomplished, what’s he most proud of?

“I finished the 'Hunger Games’ series in about two days,” Mitchell said.

Wait, but what about the touchdowns?

“That came natural,” Mitchell said. “That’s a gift. I had to work to read.”

But his greatest talent may lie in his ability to step so outside his comfort zone, to be able to meet people and focus so sincerely on what they have in common, instead of their trivial differences.

Sometimes football makes men great. And sometimes, great men just happen to play football.

March is here!

In my country, we only celebrate the 8th as Women’s Day, but I’ve decided I’m going to dedicate all of this month to reading ONLY women’s books, including books dealing about feminism, or just written by women.

I know this isn’t anything new, Manda’s #readwomen book club was all about this, and there’s also Emma Watson’s book club (which I’m part of but I never participate) and I mostly read books written by women. In fact out of all the 26 books I’ve read this year, only Miss Peregrine’s was written by a man, so I’m already only reading women.

But I’d like to celebrate Women’s Day and Women’s History Month reading books dealing with women’s identity, their struggles, their accomplishments, and I want to make it as intersectional and diverse as I can. So if you have recommendations of books by trans women, by lgtbqa women, by poc women, by all the forgotten women, my askbox is open to all your recommendations.

I’m going to be reading all the genres, so hit me up with all the poetry, non-fiction, fiction, YA, adult or children’s books you can.

Also, if you see me pick up a book that you consider problematic, please let me know, as I’m still learning and I don’t want to offend or hurt anyone.

If you’d like to join me, you’re welcome to! I’m going to be using the hashtag #reading women in march so you’re welcome to use it too, tag me in your posts or discuss with me the books you’ll be picking up.

I’m going to start with Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.

A snapshot of my bookshelves, which I recently reordered just a bit. My Harry Potter collection—the button from my old book club, a cute fake Hogwarts letter, our team name from trivia night, and more—sits in front of my box set, which resides next to my favorite books. Underneath are an assortment; hardcovers reign on the bottom shelf. I love my bookshelves. They make the Cozy Sea Cove truly feel like home. ✨✨✨

okay so since the DC cinematic universe is going with an older and more tired Bruce, I r e a l l y need an older and semi-retired Selina who just uses all of her fabulous illegally acquired wealth to like crash high-society parties and smirk at Bruce because he Knows, and she Knows He Knows, but he can’t do anything except clench his jaw in frustration. (and sometimes let her take him back to fabulous apartment for the night. or the weekend.)

and basically now she’s the eye-rolling but affectionate older sister of the rogues. Harley tries to rob this socialite at gunpoint one night and gets the shock of her damn life when Selina just sighs and asks if this is about “that clown boy”, then starts about how Harley can do better. has she met the plant girl? she seems nice.

she’s entirely unimpressed by everything Bruce does. she hears about him fighting a monster with an immortal princess and an alien and says “that’s cute.” she refers to the justice league as his book club whenever they’re in polite society just to watch his eye twitch.

she stops to chat with Alfred one night as she’s leaving the manor, and asks him if Bruce is ever going to think about proposing. Alfred sighs in his long-suffering way and says no, he doesn’t think that’s very likely. Selina gives him a wicked red lipstick smile and only says “good”; the sex is nice but she’s having way too much being a glamorous 40-something to settle down.

SD&S for @im-your-huckleberry from earlier–that was coffee #2 because today required it! Let’s see your faces @nowforthefunpart, @manyminniemiles, and @aubsenroute.

I just got home from (original) book club. It was fun! And, now I’m starting next month’s book club book. The husband said I bullied Natalie into telling me what it was early…but I prefer the term “charmed aggressively.” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s quite thick so I’d better get started so I can loan it to one of the other girls in adequate time! Natalie and I typically like similar books, so I’m excited! I gave her The Hate U Give, so we’ll get to discuss it soon!

I’m feeling that week off from the gym…I’m sore today after being back to it this week! 😫

Unknown Protection - Happy Lowman

A protective Happy Imagine.

The day was long and you were more than ready to go home. As you gathered up your pencils and papers from meeting room desk you had just finished helping Bobby work the books with the club. Even though you had no real connection with the club, you were more than happy to help out your twice removed ex uncle Bobby Munson.

“Thanks for the help again, Y/N. Always nice to have someone to hand me things from across the table and not have to stretch.”

He joked. You gave a small laugh yourself and realized just how much have a good man your once uncle was.

“No problem, Bobby. Always happy to help.”

He said as you left to be Chapel room with him. Sitting outside by the bar your eyes wandered around the room and were met with a pair of hardened ones. It was happy but he was sitting there at the bar across the room watching as you walked out with Bobby beside you.

You never really said or did anything to interact with happy, but you were always nice to him because he was as nice as he could be towards you. He never really bothered you or made it seem like he hated you and any reason, aside from those special days when he would avoid you after something happened with the club.

Bobby was nice enough to walk you out and to your car. And along the way the two of you made small talk, until Bobby turned it into something much greater than just how have you been kind of talk.

“I seen Hap lookin your way again.”

Bobby said trying to strike up that type of conversation. You gave a shrug with your shoulders as the two of you continued walking to your car across the parking lot.

“He’s just different. He doesn’t really speak to me, but he’ll watch me like a hawk sometimes. I guess that’s his way of communication when it comes to me.”

You joked.

“So being a creepy stalker is a means of communication now?”

Bobby asked rather serious. You stopped walking as you looked his way with a brow raised.

“Stalking? What do you mean stalking?”

You asked gripping hold of the folders tightly to your chest. Bobby’s I seem to widen as he turned away and muttered something along the lines of I shouldn’t have said that. He turned back to you and gave you the expression that told you he wasn’t in a killing mood anymore and that this was serious.

“Apparently… a couple of weeks ago Happy was following you home when he seen some of the Myans trailing you from leaving here… let’s just say Alvarez wasn’t happy when he found out several of his guys went missing.”

As you cannot get the dots You felt your heart stop and your chest. Questioning as if happy had really killed those men that have been following you home. It wasn’t a big secret that happy was a known killer, it was just a shocker to you that he would have done something like that.

“But… why would he? Why do something like that – ”

Bobby shrugged.

“Maybe it’s just his way of protecting you. Showing you in some odd and creepy way that he cares without actually showing you.”

Bobby said shaking his head and walking toward your car again.

You bet your bottom lip and stopped to think for a moment. If this really was a way of happy protecting you, you had to think about what else he had been doing under your nose that had kept you safe prior to now. And also you started to wonder just how long had he been doing this for?

November Just One Word Book Photo Challenge Day 21: Brown
