The Battiest Facts

For humans, it’s back-to-school season. For bats, however, it’s time to go back to their caves, along with their recently born bat pups. Here are some great facts about bats in honor of their return to the caves this August!

  • Some bats can eat up to 1,200 mosquitoes in an hour.
  • Bat mothers are able to find their babies among other bats by recognizing their unique voices and scents.

  • Guano, or bat droppings, is one of the richest fertilizers.
  • Bats are the only mammals that can fly and some can even reach speeds up to 40 mph. They are not strong fliers, however.

  • Bats use echolocation to navigate through the dark.
  • Different species of bats live in caves, in dead trees, under rocks, in buildings - all over!

  • Bats can live anywhere between 10-30 years. The oldest known bat lived to 41 years old.
  • Bats usually have one pup a year, and sometimes they’ll even have twins.

  • Bats can digest food in just 20 minutes.
  • Bats enjoy grooming themselves. They even lick behind their ears.

Thank you for sharing funny memes, complaining, making different theories, and taking a piss out of the donegal accent.

We have survived the higher level maths exam - Which wasn’t easy due to Gary and Róisin being fucking morons and measuring a tower with their shoe. We survived Irish paper 2 *cue donegal accent*. We survived being stripped off our human rights along with losing our chance to get an A for Cspe cause of Antonio gutteres replacing Ban ki- Moon.

R. I. P Ban Ki- Moon, you will be missed.

We survived the new English exam. I even managed to get a higher merit 👌👌

We survived Christopher Columbus and Martin Luther not coming up on the people in history. We survived Art and that was a fucking challenge for me. No more preparation sheets whew. We survived doing the Science experiments and writing long, pointless booklets.

I will miss the junior cert tag and our funny posts and memes. The junior cert was shit but tumblr made it bearable.

I hope that everybody is happy with their results, and if not, there is always time for improvement. I believe in all of you and you all deserved to get amazing results for all the hard work that you put in.

This is where I have to say goodbye to this tag and this chapter of my life.

I will see you for the Leaving Cert 2019

Good luck!

What I Wish I Knew Before My Junior Year of High School

Hi guys I’m going to be a senior in high school this fall and I thought I would offer some advice to incoming juniors. First and foremost, all this advice is taken from my personal experience and it may be different for you guys. I go to a large school, with over 400 kids in my graduating class and about 2,000 at my high school in total, and my school is on the east coast. I hope the advice is useful, and feel free to message me with any questions even if they seem trivial.

1. Make Good first impressions: First impressions, especially with teachers, are important now more than ever. Your junior year teachers will most likely be the ones you ask for letters of rec, so you want to start out the year on a positive note. A tip that one of my favorite teachers recommended to me is to always say good morning how are you when you walk into a classroom. This is something that I began doing everyday junior year and I found teachers really appreciate it.

2. Find Your People: Your friends are going to be the ones that get you through junior year, and I know that sounds cheesy but it’s true. It’s important to find a few people who you can talk to about school and problems in general. They will be the people you can bitch to about insane teachers, projects, people, your family, and everything else. Find people that make you excited to go to lunch and sit with them, people who want you to succeed and are only a little jealous when you do better than them on a test. You need people.

3. Don’t take on too many new activities: I feel like the best way to tell you guys why this is a bad idea is to use my own life as an example. My junior year I decided to do Marching Band, and it COMPLETELY fucked up my first marking period grades. It was way more time consuming than I thought it was going to be, and I simply could not balance Marching Band with my course load. I ended up dropping one of my honors classes, and I didn’t even like marching band. What I DO recommend is to join one new club that you can manage and that you really enjoy. Whether you joing because of the focus or the people, a new club that you are passionate about is a great way to make some memories (and they are always good for college apps and essays).

4. Exercise: Through the fall and the winter of my junior year I began to stress eat and because I wasn’t working out I ended up gaining a lot of weight. I began working out regularly and eating healthy in April and it was an amazing, rewarding decision. Even if it’s just three times a week, running or weight lifting is a great stress reliever and it helps keep the weight off if you are prone to stress eating!

5. Do Your Goddamn Homework! Teachers will not be sympathetic to you anymore if you forget to do your homework or forget turn in assignments. “Your almost seniors” is something that you will most likely hear at least 50 million times as a junior in order to instill a sense of responsibility. Teachers, parents, counselors, and siblings will all be telling you to there is no excuse for late work. Honestly it is super annoying, but they do have a point. Teachers will also be more willing to help students that participate in class which includes doing homework. In summary, do your homework!

6. The SAT’s will suck but they won’t go away: At least for me, the SAT’s were THE scariest part of junior year. I remember thinking that the only thing colleges cared about were SAT scores, and I could never get above a 1600. I WAS VERY WRONG. If you study you CAN really improve your score and even if you aren’t satisfied with your score a lot of NICE schools that offer GOOD degrees are test optional. My recommendation is to start studying as early as possible, and by that I mean START NOW! It can be very intimidating opening your first SAT book and taking a practice test, but just DO IT. Get it done so you at least know where your strengths and weaknesses are. The SAT is one way that colleges judge your preparedness for college, so you want to show them you are a committed student. I will be doing a separate post about SAT tips in the near future!

7. Know Your Limits: This is a tip that I feel applies to every aspect of high school. Whether it be your limits with guys, friends, at parties, or academically this is the year that will challenge you and you need to figure out when to push back and when to step back. I’m not a big partier at all so I will just leave the blanket statement of BE SAFE. In terms of academics, this year does get a lot tougher. My sophomore year I was in a nice groove and the amount of work I had was perfect, and junior year kind of ruined that. Junior year I felt overwhelmed by my classes and it took me a few months to figure out how to handle it all. I remember one day I almost broke down at lunch because I was so overwhelmed and I ended up going home early so I could finish all my work. I made a lot of mistakes with my health junior year, and if I could go back and change it, I would do it in a heartbeat. Taking a personal day is OKAY, in fact most of my friends did it junior year at least three times. In the end it’s about finding a balance between doing what you want to do and doing your schoolwork. Find that balance and you will be fine.

8. Start planning for college: My school emphasized looking for colleges as early as the fall of junior year. If you take the SAT’s in the fall (which I highly recommend even though I took mine in March) then it makes looking at colleges a lot easier. Once you get your scores back you can start figuring out what schools are in your range. I recommend starting college visits junior year. Visit at MINIMUM at least one school with an urban campus, a suburban campus, a large school, a small school, a medium school, a school in your state, and a school outside your state. You don’t have to start finalizing your list of schools yet, but you should get an idea of what you like and what you want to study.

Message me with any questions; I’m on tumblr everyday so I will most likely get back to you right away. Have a good rest of the summer and GOOD LUCK JUNIORS

This is a submitted series by a writer who wished to stay anonymous, so I will be transferring their submissions to text posts yay! I just wanted to make it known that this work is not mine, and all credits go to the original author that decided to submit their series to my blog. Enjoy! :))

Junior cert Science

So apparently Science was easy for everybody. Try doing that science exam when you did not study whatsoever. Biology was okay. Chemistry was okay as far as the questions asking about atoms and sub particles and equations for freaking carbon dioxide. Physics was an absolute mess. The amount of Bullshit I wrote for that section was actually funny.
I try to make myself feel better about my existence by reminding myself that Róisin and Gary tried to measure a tower with their shoe.

 part 2 | 3 | ongoing

Summary: BTS au where Jin is a junior neuro-science major, Yoongi is a junior basketball player and majors in creative writing and composition, Hoseok is a junior dance major, Namjoon is a sophmore who majors in history and liberal arts, Jimin is a sophmore dance and art major, Taehyung is a sophmore photography and graphic design major, and Jungkook is a sophmore baseball player and game and interactive media design major. The seven of them were envied throughout the whole school and held their own small ‘fraternity’ close to campus… and somehow you’ve managed to date all of them at once. (They still have the same age difference but for this au I made them older than they are now and obviously since it’s college age isn’t limited.)

When you first arrived as a freshman at the most prestige university of your whole country, you were nervous but managed to make friends rather quickly. It wasn’t often that you approached anyone because you were shy and quite timid around new people but you would be damned if you went through this new change alone.

You were considered undecisive because you hadn’t stuck to one major yet and your counselor put out your classes so that you could literally just take things you were interested in until you decided on a major, and when you did you wouldn’t be behind at all. Although you loved this plan, it was still hard to juggle different majoring classes while holding a full time job. You came to this school with a scholarship that only covered tuition, you had to pay for your own dorm and your own books and both were expensive as hell and you found yourself drowning in bills by the middle of your first semester.

You looked away from the reminder that popped up on your phone and dared to take a look at the only thing that kept you sane in this boring art composition class. His name was Park Jimin, part of the notorious “mysterious seven” as your friends liked to call them. On the first day you met your friends they practically dragged you to the mansion that belonged to the notorious frat boys and you oggled at the money they could obtain while still attending college full time. Their mansion was big and looked scary from the outside but you imagined it was beauitifully decorated with the finest china and arts inside. Your friends had laughed at your gobbsmacked expression before driving away, but your eyes stayed glued to the manor, something about it’s dark windows and castle-like appearance drew you in.

Your friends later told you the names of all the secret seven and you weren’t the least surprised when you found out the cute and quiet boy in your class was in fact apart of the frat. Your friends always spoke about them, one even went as far as to tell you how to get them in bed. You were quite flustered when she went into detail about how different they all were in bed and you dared ask the one question that continuiously floated your mind when this exotic conversation started.

“How do you know all this?”

Your friends laughed at your blushed cheeks and widened eyes.

“Because she slept with all of them, dumby.” Lia answered you with a knowing smirk towards Kassie. Kassie, the more forward and outgoing of both your friends returned the smirk and directed it towards you. They were all sophmores along with Jungkook, Jimin, Namjoon, and Taehyung; making them even more irresistible to your two friends.

“You’re one to talk Lia, you totally had a summer fling with the second oldest, Yoongi; and I know for a fact that you liked his tongue technology.”

Lia gasped, smacking the arm of Kassie as they both howled with laughter. You smiled and chuckled to yourself as your eyes consciously fell to your feet. You were aware of how much more prettier your friends were then you and how experienced they were where you barely had any knowledge other than science when it came to that.

“Oh, my god.” Kassie suddenly said making Lia stop laughing and your head to snap towards her. Kassie was already looking at you with shocked and amused eyes. “Y/N’s totally a virgin.” Kassie gushed and started to squeal when you didn’t dare deny it. Lia placed a hand over her stomach and looked at you whilst pouting her red-stained lips.

“Aww little Y/N. You just heard us go on and on about fucking the frat guys, no wonder you were so red.”

You blushed at Lia’s words and kept your eyes hidden from them as you looked anywhere but at them. You suddenly felt arms entangle your waist and shoulders and after squeaking, you realized your friends were embracing you like they always did.

“Good thing you have us then,” Lia snickered. “We’re totally getting you laid by the end of the semester.”

And thus started Lia’s and Kassie’s obsession with teaching you how to talk to boys and get yourself laid. It was absurd, but as you continued staring at Jimin in your art class you figured, why the hell not?

Your teacher usually left around thirty minutes at the end of class for students to interact and compare notes on all things art. You took these times to get a head start on next class’s work which deemed easier to deal with than talking about landscape paintings and brush techniques with other students. You found this class rather boring and the only thing that ever made you look forward to it was Jimin. You wouldn’t admit to anyone but something about Jimin felt safe, and the more you stared at the back of his head the more you felt comfortable. You put your phone away and got your mind off the reminder that signified your monthly rent was due soon and you knew for a fact that you weren’t going to be able to pay it, at least not on time.

You sighed and picked up your bag while stuffing your books into it. You looked over at where Jimin sat and you felt your shoulders slouch as you began to chicken out, but then you remembered everything Kassie and Lia taught you and you didn’t want their endless nights of wine talk to go to waste. You straightened your back and held your head high as you made your way across the room and sat yourself down next to Jimin. No one really cared as everyone else had moved around as well. You looked over at Jimin and swooned over the focused look that cast his beautiful features. You continued to stare, all validation and small talk leaving your mind as you watched Jimin draw effortlessly.

Jimin knew you were watching him, you always watched him. He noticed quite quickly that your furrowed brows would relax upon seeing him and your cute pouty lips would smile warmly when your eyes landed on him. He didn’t mind being your distraction to whatever caused your adorable sad face and more days than he’d like to admit; he would like to ease your worries with other distractions.

When you noticed the smirk on Jimin’s lips you quickly looked away. A frown covered his smug expression and he looked over at you. He figured you were there to finally speak to him but you got out of your seat and left the class just then and Jimin realized it had ended. He chuckled to himself and shook his head, gathering his belongings before leaving the class.

Your face burned red as you scurried down the busy hallway. You tried not to look behind yourself, you didn’t want to see Jimin’s smirk again. You honestly felt so humiliated that you blantly stared at him for five minutes straight without uttering so much as a simple 'hello’.

Lost in your own world and embarrassment you didn’t see the basketball team heading straight in your direction. They were messing around with a ball and the team’s captain was dribbling it between his legs while one of the players tried to take the ball away from him. They all laughed making you look up, but it didn’t matter as Yoongi’s back was already bumping into your smaller body. Your bag and phone instantly slipped from your hands and you stumbled back. Yoongi wouldn’t have noticed that he completely threw you off your balance if it weren’t for your phone hitting the back of his head.

With a grunt, the blonde turned swiftly and to his amazement, there you were. Little Y/N Y/L/N stared up at him with those innocent eyes and Yoongi completely forgot about his rising anger towards whoever he had thought bumped into him. He reached for your arm and brought you to your feet quickly. Your cheeks immediately flared and you bent down the same time Yoongi did only for your forhead to come in contact with Yoongi’s shoulder. You stood up immediately and after Yoongi picked up your stuff he turned to you as you clutched your head.

“I’m so sorry.” You knew exactly who Min Yoongi was, and in all honesty; you were terrified. Yoongi had a reputation to be cold and distant to anyone who wasn’t his team and the other mysterious seven. Alhough all the boys could be cocky and rude, Yoongi put fear into other students, including you. You grabbed your phone and back from Yoongi and quickly secured your backpack over your shoulder while putting your phone into your back pocket. You had never been this close to Yoongi before, and you tried not to stare in fear that he might bite your head off.

To your surprise, Yoongi smiled; a cute and gummy smile. You stared fondly at the simple act and snapped out of your trance when Yoongi shrugged with a laugh. His basketball team were already on the other side of the hallway by now and were playing with Yoongi’s ball, but he could care less. He looked at you with lust-filled eyes and it almost threw you off your balance again but you gripped tightly onto the strap of your bag to try not to faint then and there.

“It was my fault, Y/N. I should have paid more attention to where I was going,” Yoongi smirked. You chocked on your saliva, descreetly enough, as your cheeks burned brighter.

“How do you know my name?” Your voice was quiet and Yoongi’s smile brightened at the sound.

“I know everyone,” Yoongi replied smoothly. You just nodded, beginning to feel awkward under Yoongi’s lustful stare. He stepped closer to you, his confidence and determination setting in but then an arm was slung over his shoulder and Yoongi tried not to groan in annoyance.

“Yoongi, I didn’t know you knew Y/N.”

Your face completely fell at the sight of Jimin, and embarrassment began to rise in the pit of your stomach again. Jimin and Yoongi took notice, and Yoongi immediately turned towards his best friend with a glare.

“I’m guessing you know her too.”

Something in Yoongi’s voice sounded odd to you. He sounded angry and quite possessive. Jimin’s smile never faltered as he returned Yoongi’s glare. “Yes, I know her well.”

Both boys immediately turned their gaze to you, both of them softening at the sight of your blushed cheeks and awkward hands that clung onto your backpack.

The three of you turned towards your only friends who were walking swiftly towards you, both holding questioning glances towards the boys in front of you.

“Hey Yoongi,” Lia smirked at the blonde. The boy completely ignored her and to your horror; both his and Jimin’s eyes were already on you. They knew you hung around eager Lia and desparate Kassie, but they still thought you were too pure for them.

“See you around, Y/N.” Jimin smiled before he took Yoongi away with him. Yoongi sent you one last smirk before walking past and ignoring your friends.

“Bye Jimin!” Kassie called after the artist lamely. Kassie and Lia turned towards each other, eyebrows raised and mouths hung open before they turned towards you.

“Tell us everyhing,” Kassie demanded.

Little did you know that that day would open a whole new world to you and your life would forever change.

At my junior high my science teacher had two rats named snickers and goobers and we trained them to do a bunch of tasks and my favorite was the unicorn rescue because what is cuter than a rat pulling a unicorn back up onto a table and then cuddling it (I'll send a video if I can find it ^-^)

Relationship: Ten x Rose

Summary: Rose needs the Doctor’s help to sleep, and the TARDIS gets involved.

Notes:  Hello lovelies! This bit of nothing was written in response to a @timepetalsprompts prompt that involved the Doctor singing Tom Lehrer’s Elements Song in the shower. Prompt here

It’s all fluff and there’s no real plot and I wrote it stupidly late, so….yeah. I hope you like it anyway!Unbeta’d. All mistakes are mine.

Also on A03.

Rose shifted for what seemed the hundredth time and sighed. It was obvious she wasn’t going to be getting any sleep tonight. No matter how many deep breaths she took or how many sheep she counted, she couldn’t sleep. She wished now that she’d taken the Doctor up on his offer of a little telepathic help, but she’d been so sure that the exhaustion of a four day trek through Molkania trying to escape the rebel King would send her straight to sleep that she’d declined.

So much for that.

Turning over yet again, she huffed in frustration. Right, that was it. Flinging back the covers she slid from the bed and marched out of the room in search of the Doctor, expecting he’d be in the library as he usually was, reading away as she slept.

Only he wasn’t.

She frowned at the empty room, irritation warring with exhaustion. Where was he, then? She knew he wouldn’t be in the console room, because he’d said the TARDIS needed a break from repairs, and they both knew he couldn’t spend more than a minute in the console room without fiddling with something. So where was he? She was so tired and all she needed was a little telepathic nudge from the Doctor to help her sleep, but she really didn’t feel like traipsing all over the TARDIS to find him.

Focusing intently, Rose pleaded with the TARDIS. “Help a girl out? I know you can do that telepathy stuff too. Just….I can’t sleep an’ I’m dyin’ here. Please?”

The TARDIS hummed soothingly and Rose sighed in relief as her bedroom door appeared.

“Thanks love, you’re the best.”

The TARDIS hummed affectionately and Rose patted the wall in thanks as she opened the door to her room…only to find she wasn’t in her room.

She was, in fact, in the Doctor’s room.

“What?” She rubbed at her eyes, staring at the Doctor’s banana-print bedspread. “What’d you bring me here for?”

The TARDIS hummed again and closed the door before removing it for good measure.

“Oh, you’re kiddin’ me!”

The timeship’s hum was smug, this time.

“Come on, don’t do this to me now,” she pleaded. “I’m dyin’ here. Just let me go back to my room and help me sleep. Please?”

The TARDIS hummed soothingly but the door didn’t reappear.

Rose sighed and gave in, flopping onto the bed.

Now what?

Just then, she heard the shower start in the next room and a familiar voice started singing at a hundred miles an hour.

“There’s antimony, arsenic, aluminum, selenium, and hydrogen and oxygen and nitrogen and rhenium…”

Rose rolled her eyes, recognising a few of the names from junior form science.

“And lanthanum and osmium and astatine and radium, and gold and protactinium and indium and gallium, and iodine and thorium and thulium and thallium.”

She snorted, curling up and snuggling into the closest pillow. Only the Doctor could sing about chemicals with such great enthusiasm, and judging by his volume, he was really enjoying himself. She turned her face into the pillow to stifle her giggles.

Surprisingly, however, as the song went on, her eyes began to feel quite heavy, no matter how she tried to keep them open, and the comforting scent of the Doctor on the pillows and sheets left her languid and utterly boneless.

“You were supposed to help me sleep in my room,” she muttered to the TARDIS, trying her best to stay awake.

By the time the Doctor got to ‘tungsten, tin and sodium,’ however, Rose was fast asleep.

The Doctor rubbed at his (very impressive) hair vigorously with a towel and hummed a few bars of Tom Lehrer’s Elaments Song. It was a brilliant composition, if not long out of date, and a good, rousing rendition was just what he needed after the very long few days he and Rose had had.

He frowned as he slipped into his jimjams. Rose had looked more than a little peaky, come to think of it- he’d have to look in on her and make sure she was sleeping alright. It had been a pretty grueling few days even by his standards, after all, so who knew what it had done to her utterly brilliant but oh, so fragile human self?

Flinging open the bathroom door, he decided he’d look in on her first thing before nipping off to the library for a few hours of quiet reading. However, he had taken no more than two steps into his room when he noticed a lump on his bed.

A Rose-shaped lump, to be precise.

And she was fast asleep.

He huffed, cocking an eyebrow at the ceiling, knowing full well who was responsible. “You know, out of all the ships, I chose to steal you. I’m sure the other models wouldn’t have been this meddlesome.”

The TARDIS chimed and if he didn’t know better he’d say she’d just blown a raspberry at him.

He rolled his eyes and strode to the bed, bending to lift Rose into his arms and carry her back to her own bed…only to change his mind and straighten up again. Sighing, he tugged at the covers and pulled them gently over her instead.

She looked so peaceful and she’d been so very tired that it would be a shame to wake her, he told himself. She was only human, after all. He’d leave her settled comfortably and go and have a nice read in the library, as he’d planned. However, turning towards the door, he noticed it was missing and sighed.

“Oh, come on! That’s a bit much, isn’t it? What if I want to read a book? You know I don’t sleep as often as humans do.”

The TARDIS said nothing and a small pile of books appeared on his bedside table. He sighed in resignation. “Fine.”

Rifling through the stack, he resolutely ignored Twenty-First Century Human Courting Rituals for Dummies and instead chose to re-read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Noticing that his armchair had mysteriously vanished, he rolled his eyes and settled into bed side Rose, careful not to disturb her. He glanced over as he opened the book, and smiled.

Rose was sleeping peacefully, a contented smile on her face.

Molto bene,” he said quietly. “Molto bene.”
