jumping off an edge

Part I (Jump Identification)  ||  Part II (Combination Jumps)  ||  Part III (Spin Identification)

For there to be a combination of jumps, the 2nd jump must take off from the landing edge of the 1st jump

Since Yuzuru, Plushenko and Wakaba all rotate anti-clockwise in the air, these examples are for anti-clockwise jumps. For clock-wise jumpers, the left and right would reversed.

Much thanks to the anon who suggested this

  • Taiyang: So on our first day of Beacon, after we had done the whole team formation exercise, Qrow took us all up to the roof for more bonding. Anyway, we got up there and remember at this point, none of us knew Qrow's landing strategy, all we knew was that I landed and Qrow appeared beside me. So Qrow walks over to the edge of Beacon Tower, and jumps off. I freak out, Summer almost has a heart attack, and Raven just stands there, doing nothing while a fucking crow - which we later learned was Qrow - flies up and lands on her head!
  • Qrow: I told you I was going to show you something.
  • Qrow: And it was fucking hilarious!

1 hour colored sketch for MRAU’s most recent chapter.

She felt her body straighten as her heart began to beat frantically with excitement. Her face couldn’t fight the immense elation she felt, and for the first time in years, felt a genuine smile lay into her lips. The blood under her skin began boiling as she fully faced him, Schwarz and Rot being gently caressed by the pads of her fingers. Her brows furrowed as her smile grew wider with each step he took.

Summer could hear Salem talking, but it was all muddled in her head. Something about not seeing a SEW fight in years or something to that accord. It didn’t matter what she had to say. Her focus was entirely on Qrow, tracing the lines of his muscles with her eyes, taking in his assertive stance, memorizing the look of sheer excitement on his face. He was too much for Summer to bear. Her body began to ache with need, feeling herself getting close to an edge that she desired to jump off of. Looking into his eyes, she saw it. The same, burning, primal need. The pent up emotion, aggression, and frustration was going to vent, allowing the pressure that they both seemed to have endured and built up for years release and subside. He yearned for her, just as she did for him. Her face grew hot with anticipation, feeling as though they had been waiting for Salem’s command for eons.

In a brief moment, Summer realized something very vital about herself and how she felt toward Qrow. She did not just need him. She wanted him. In how many senses, she couldn’t place in that very instance. She knew, however, she wanted no one but him, here and now, and was going to enjoy receiving every last drop that he had to offer.

For you

Sleep, love

Rest from the terror

of this day

Hold yourself to yourself

gathered, pressed and poured

out in good measure

Stand fast against the wounds

this life inflicts upon such as us

We bleed love, oh yes we bleed

hearts rent, emotions spent

Life lived on the edge

Needing more, bleeding more

jumping off the ledge

We open that last door

into our future

Out of past

Not built to last

and still we strive

This is how we know

we’re alive

Live, laugh and love

with me, for me too

Don’t you know

I love, laugh and live

just for you

Figure Skating Elements: Half Loop Combinations & Jump Sequences

A continuation of the basic jumps and triple-triple combinations posts. I highly recommend that you read those two before reading this one.

Quick review: In a jump combination, the landing edge of one jump is the takeoff edge of the next jump with no break in between. Since all jumps land on a back outside edge, under normal circumstances, the second or third jump in a combination is either a toeloop or a loop, since those are the only jumps that take off from a back outside edge.

Since the 2012-13 season, the ISU has allowed the half loop to be used in combinations. The half loop is a single-rotation, non-standard jump that takes off from a back outside edge and lands on the back inside edge of the opposite foot. It effectively allows the skater to “change feet” during the combination. If the skater rotates counterclockwise (as most do), this means that the half loop takes off from the back outside edge of their right foot and lands on the back inside edge of their left foot. This allows the skater to do a salchow (the most common choice) or a flip (rare) as the next jump in the combination, since those jumps take off from the back inside edge of the left foot.

On protocols, the half loop appears as “1Lo” and has the same base value as a normal single loop. It only counts for points if done in a combination. A half loop combo is considered a 3-jump combination; if a skater does a half loop combo in the free skate, they cannot do another 3-jump combination, since only one is allowed in the free program.

When badly done (sadly all too often), the half loop can easily look like a step-out or a mistake on a jump landing. The examples I’ve used here all have a triple as the last jump in the combination, but skaters can do doubles as well. The first jump in the combination can be any of the six standard jumps (toeloop, salchow, loop, flip, lutz, axel).

I know you’re afraid. I know. We all are. That’s okay. Fear is pure survival instinct. It’s what fills your veins with adrenaline and makes your legs keep running when you think you can’t go on.

Fear is not what stops you. Fear is not the cliffs edge that makes your road halt. Fear is the final push that makes you jump off the edge and dive into the unknown.

Let this fear drive your fight. Embrace the fear and hold on tightly to hope. Fear without hope is defeatist. Fear with hope is resilience.

The one thing we must fear most of all is the day we are indifferent. If you are afraid, you’re still fighting to survive. Keep fighting. It’s okay to be afraid. Don’t give up.

When I look at you
I see who you are now
I want to know your story
What, when, if, why and how
I wonder about your home
The place you used to live
How long you played with toys
When you were a little kid
If your parents read you books
Every night before bed,
When they stopped saying goodnight
And kissing the top of your head
Why are you the way you are
With your curves and sharp edges
What stopped you from jumping off
Sixty foot tall hotel ledges
You had one hell of a journey
That is a known fact
But you cannot forge onward
Without ever looking back
I want to see your spirit
Where you end and you begin
Tell me your darkest secrets,
Show me love and let me in.
—  J.DeLissio, Day 155, “Your Story”
I woke up an Aries, headstrong and ready to set the world ablaze, instead I jumped off the edge of a cliff and swam to the ends of the ocean, saying hello to every fish I came across. I took a page from Jonah’s book and kissed a whale as he tried to swallow me whole.
I woke up a Taurus, amiable and healed. There were no scars on my soul and I let the soft Earth caress the soles of my feet. The forests bid me a warm hello as they engulfed my body in waxy vines and made the storms in my soul disperse.
I woke up a Gemini, playing hide and seek with the two sides of my self. My old heart was wired shut, encased in hard diamond so I cracked it open and let the secrets flow. I bid myself a warm welcome,
it has been so long since I last loved myself.
I woke up a Cancer and tied up my loose ends with the strings of my past, my, what lovely gifts I give. A wok brimming with broccoli, carrots, and my mother’s words filled my soul,
it is time I give myself the nourishment I have always waited for from others.
I woke up a Leo, I woke up the wind and the sun, I was the universe’s alarm clock. I challenged the mountains resilience and showed them the meaning of true strength because despite all the muck of existence, today,
I still woke up.
I woke up a Virgo and I cleansed my mind of my own toxic presence. For the entire day, I had a make out session with Nirvana and teased the stars about their dust and how it would be well for them to be like me and realize their true potential.
I woke up a Libra and put everything on my scale. I cut out the people who breathed life into things I hated, turning my insecurities into the undead. I learned the only enemy I need love,
is myself.
I woke up a Scorpio, fierce and full of love so profound that as I twirled in dark caverns, Fire was born. I covered the ones around me in a soft warmth and caused one thousand days of Sun.
I woke up a Sagittarius, and I created the seasons with gusto, gave the Autumn my brown eyes, let the winter embody steel resilience, gave permission to the summer to borrow my smile and the tender spring received my blessings.
I woke up a Capricorn, and I listened to the laughter of the hills and valleys. I made a necklace of my favorite archipelago and wore her around my neck as unnamed planets gravitated around, crowning me.
I woke up an Aquarius, and taught the numbers their names and places. I taught the words their meanings and gave validation to my fears as I declawed them one by tender one.
I woke up a Pisces. I watched as the flowers mimicked my growth and the oceans grew jealous of the depth in my eyes. I listened to the wind try to enchant me and gratified the breeze with a kiss on my cheek. Today,
I woke up Me.
And finally gazed at the Beauty of the past twelve days.
