Episode 22 Nalu Moment

You have no idea how much I love this moment. I had already booked the ticket for the S.S. Nalu, but this is what made me hurry up and board with an extended lifetime ticket. It’s also the moment that made my best friend start to ship them.

So, Lucy was kidnapped and just discovered that she is indirectly at fault for her guild’s pain. She tries to escape Phantom Lord, only to find that her cell is several stories high.

She starts to weigh her options and remembers the oppressiveness of her father, Jude Heartfilia.

She’s not going to go back to that life. So, she uses her only other option. To  jump. Lucy places all of her trust in a single person. She knows that he’ll be there to catch her.

Chapter Seventy-One: Breaking point

Lucy walked as slow as she could towards the exit. Every time she passed another classroom, she would look behind her, hoping to see a flash of pink hair in the crowd. Her heart jumped when she finally saw it, her eyes flitting down to see the face of her boyfriend.

Natsu was hurrying through the crowd of kids, trying to get closer to Lucy. She stopped, hoping she wouldn’t get in trouble for being a little late today. School was a prison for most, but for Lucy, her prison was never-ending.

“Hey Luce,” Natsu greeted, wrapping an arm around her waist to pull her close. She stepped with him, her own hand resting on the small of his back, right under his backpack. “Sorry I was late.”

“You’re fine,” she whispered, thankful she even got to see him today. Virgo had given her no time in the morning to see her friends. She was almost late for class, but she managed to make it just in time. She didn’t see Natsu during lunch, Virgo taking her out of school again as part of her father’s absurd punishment.

If Lucy didn’t get to see Natsu right after school ended, she wouldn’t get another chance until Monday, seeing as it was Friday afternoon. She already knew she wouldn’t get to see her friends this weekend, even if the thought hurt her heart.

Before they left the school, they separated, not wanting to rile her father up more. Lucy didn’t trust Virgo any longer, not wanting the maid to witness her kissing or hugging Natsu, only to report it back to her father.

Natsu’s warm lips lingered on hers for a few seconds longer than normal before he pulled away, grasping her hand before he dug in his pocket.

Lucy felt the dull ache in her heart subside a bit as warmth filled it, Natsu’s touches making her feel loved and wanted, even if he was only holding her hand. She couldn’t help it, starved for any type of affection she could get. She missed Natsu, even if he was standing right in front of her.

She wanted to call him at night and binge watch anime with him. She wanted to play Pokémon GO with him and their friends at the park, or simply go out and watch a movie. She just wanted someone to talk to and hang out with, someone who genuinely wanted her around.

She didn’t feel wanted at home, her heart growing colder just thinking about it.

With his hands shoved into his pockets, Gray took a deep breath and slipped into his home. He could hear Ur on the phone in one of the rooms, voice distressed as she spoke urgently. He couldn’t blame her. Out of three children, he was the last, and they both know just how likely it was that Ultear and Lyon had been taken by the very people who’d taken his friends.

“I’m home!” he called and she greeted him faintly before going back to what she was doing. He wasn’t too upset. She was busy.

Scrubbing a hand down his face, Gray trampled past the kitchen and upstairs to his bedroom. He dropped onto his bed and then checked his phone.

He’d been expecting calls from Erza, Lucy, Levy, or even some other person from the tavern he hung out at.

He was not expecting a missed call from Lyon.

“Ur!” he shouted, immediately on his feet. He booked it back downstairs and into the dining room, where Ur sat with her phone to her ear. “Ur,” he gasped when she looked up, dark eyes watching him with impatience. “Ur, Lyon called my phone.”

She hastily bid her contact farewell. She waved him over and he scrambled to stand beside her. He set his phone on the table. “Play it,” she ordered, readying a pen to make note of Lyon’s words.

Gray hit the button.

Chapter Seventy-Four: The Dragon vs. The King

Natsu snickered at his outfit, finding the coveralls he was wearing weird but amusing at the same time. He’d seen his dad wear them for years, but he didn’t think he’d be wearing them so soon. The thought of following in his dad’s footsteps and being a mechanic had crossed his mind several times, but he hadn’t decided yet. He figured he had until the end of his senior year to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, and even then, he could always change it later if he wanted to.

Still, it would have been nice to have it all figured out now, but life didn’t exactly work that way.

Natsu got to work, watching his father as he showed him how to replace a flat tire with a new one. It didn’t take as long as Natsu thought it would, but Igneel said that was because it was a smaller tire.

“If the tire’s too big it takes longer to let the machine cool off.”

Natsu nodded, thankful that wasn’t the case today. After Igneel finished up, he sent Natsu to do an oil change. He was getting better at them every time, so he was confident he could get this one taken care of as well.

He carried on like normal, occasionally letting his mind wander. He wasn’t surprised when it kept going back to Lucy, and he didn’t bother trying to stop thinking about her. He would be lying if he said he wasn’t worried about her. He hadn’t heard from her since she got in the car Friday night, and it was now Sunday.

Natsu tried calling her cellphone, but it was turned off. He left her a few messages on Facebook, but he didn’t get a response. He didn’t blame Lucy. It was her father’s fault she couldn’t talk to him or any of their other friends.

Hell, Natsu would be happy if Lucy got to see one of their other friends, as long as she wasn’t alone. Sure he wished it was him she could hang out with, but he knew Lucy would be ecstatic to see Levy, Erza, or Juvia. However, Natsu didn’t think Jude would let that happen.

Jude proved he was a heartless man, which was ironic given his name.

Natsu slid out from under the car when he finished draining the oil. He wiped his face with a clean part of his sleeve, seeing the blue material was now black. He stood up once he cleared the vehicle, walking over to the counter to grab a shop towel. He wiped his face, then started heading back to the car to finish up.

“Hey Igneel,” Ben called out when he entered the garage, grabbing everyone’s attention. “There’s someone here to see you.”

Metalicana and Natsu started looking away, figuring it wasn’t any of their business. Natsu was just about to get back to work when he heard his dad’s low voice, laced with anger.

“What are you doing here?”

Natsu turned, green eyes widening when he saw the man who had tormented his girlfriend standing at the doorway. Jude Heartfilia had his arms by his side, his eyes flitting from the grease and oil stains on the door frame, as if worried they might jump out and ruin his suit.

Jude cleared this throat, his back straightening as he said, “I’d like to speak with you if you’re not too busy.”

Igneel looked over at Metalicana, handing him his lug wrench. He whispered, but Natsu caught it. “Probably not a good idea for me to hold this.” Natsu couldn’t help but agree. His dad could be scary if he wanted to, and a weapon would only make him more dangerous.

Igneel walked over to Jude, crossing his arms over his chest. “Okay. Talk.”

Chapter Seventy-Two: The meeting

“Are you serious?” Natsu asked, leaning over so he could peek at Gray’s phone. “That’s way faster than I thought it’d take.”

Gray nodded, scrolling down to the part of the article he was talking about. “Second gen Pokémon are gonna get released in September. At least that’s what the company is aiming for.”

“That’ll be awesome!” Natsu could feel his blood pumping faster as he thought about all the Pokémon he wanted to catch. “I’m gonna get a Houndoom!”

“What are you going on about?” Gajeel asked, lifting his head up from the book he was reading. His voice sounded irritated, but his eyes revealed the truth. He was excited to take a break from the book Levy had forced him to read.

“Pokémon GO. The secon—” Natsu’s voice cut out when he heard something weird behind him. It almost sounded like water was shaking. As he turned to look for the source of the noise, he also started hearing the sound of rapid footsteps draw closer.

Natsu looked up, green eyes widening when he saw his girlfriend running right towards him, her backpack swaying with every step, causing the water bottle in the side pocket to shake.

Natsu didn’t hesitate to stand up, his mouth opening to ask her what she was doing there, only to get the air knocked out of him when Lucy slammed herself into his body. They both stumbled backwards, but luckily Gray lifted his hand up to push on Natsu’s back, preventing them from falling on the table.

The couple barely noticed, their focus being on the hug shared between them. Natsu held Lucy tight against his chest, his pulse skyrocketing as she nuzzled her face against his neck. The air was warm, so he was wearing the scarf lower on his neck, giving him some breathing room. He didn’t know Lucy would be pressing her nose and lips to his bare flesh, but he wasn’t opposed to the feeling.

“What are you doing here?” he finally managed to say, not able to keep the smile out of his voice, not that he wanted to hold it back.

Lucy pulled back, but her arms remained around him, refusing to let go. “I got to take the bus to school today.” It was the only explanation she gave at that time, but Natsu didn’t mind. He had his girl in his arms. He didn’t care to question it too much, simply enjoying the feeling.

. Cross My Heart .

Author’s Note: Well!  FT Angst Week is starting on the first, and today is the first bonus day, so guess who decided to write for all of it?

This is a Nalu one-shot for the prompt “Cross my heart".

Cross my heart…

They meet among the crisp white roses that make up her garden.

She sees him in the shadows of the apple tree, her soft pink lips parting in surprise when she sees the quiet teen with hair as rose-colored as the sky as the sun that sets behind him. She asks of who he is; he answers that he is the King of Demons, dubbed such by the brother that loves him enough to bring him back from the dead. He tells her that he doesn’t really have a name anymore, that many call him by the hair-raising title his brother has given him, one that she knows well.

When he returns the question, she replies with simple words: “I am Lucy. I’m the woman who lives in this place, alone, because my father is away with my mother, working on their company to try and get us more money so that we may live in a nicer home. One that isn’t falling apart.”

He replies, “Why wouldn’t you leave?”

“Because it’s my home and I must wait for Mother and Father,” she replies calmly. She tucks a lock of blonde hair behind her ear, her actions thoughtful. “Mother told me to beware the man who goes by E.N.D. But I don’t believe that you’re someone to fear…you look tired. Why?”

He bares his teeth almost playfully, showing their sharpness, and Lucy notices the black markings that creep up his face as he does so before fading away again. “I’m tired of having to kill. I don’t like it. But I have to.”

She questions why he has to; E.N.D. holds no answer.

So she asks him another question, a secretive smile on her gentle face. “Well?” she urges. “Tell me your name. Not your title, but your name.”

He is honestly startled by this. “You want to know the name I had before?”

“The one you were given by your parents, yes,” she confirms.

“…Natsu,” he says hoarsely, unable to believe what this kind girl is saying. Her blonde hair glows like that of a fairy’s as she smiles, her dark eyes delighted. “Natsu. My name is Natsu.”

Is your dad being an asshole again?

Lucy stared at the message on the screen with red eyes and sniffled lightly at the reminder of how imperfect her family was. Anybody looking in on her life would beg to differ. In fact, it was likely that anybody who saw her right then would call her a spoiled brat.  Lucy Heartfilia pretty much had everything that she could ever want or need at her fingertips. One of the many perks to being the daughter of Jude Heartfilia. A very wealthy and very powerful man who was used to pretty much always getting his way.

So when Lucy argued with him about how she was going to live her life, he never took to it very kindly. He would often threaten to take away her technology after a particularly bad fight between the two of them, which was something that Lucy certainly didn’t ever want to have to worry about.

Her chats with SlayerofDragons were the only things that kept her from going insane it seemed like.

Yeah, he brought up my future again. I’m sure you can guess how that went.  She typed back once her fingers were able to do so and hit enter. After a moment of thought, she began to type again. I probably won’t be able to chat long, he was pretty mad at me. Will you be able to chat tomorrow?

Lucy chewed on her lip anxiously as she hit send and leaned back in her desk chair, waiting for her friends response.

They’d met a few years prior on an art website and had become fast friends. Slayer was extremely talented when it came to painting, every single thing that he uploaded absolutely astonished Lucy. The two of them were almost always chatting, at least… they did so whenever the both of them could. Fortunately for Lucy, he was pretty much online all the time.

Of course, you know I’m always here to chat with you. Always.

Summary: Being new to the school wasn’t Lucy’s only problem; try being mute as well. Also add in being bullied for her disability, but fortunately for Lucy a pink haired male swore to protect her. Befriending the mysterious man, Lucy realized she wasn’t the only one with troubles in her life.

“Lucy!” The blonde looked up seeing her father rush into the little nurse’s office, a distressed look on his features. He took one glance at his beaten up daughter, already the image of her bruised body implanted in his mind. “Oh my…”

Natsu seen Jude’s head snap over to his to meet his gaze, anger twinkling in his eye. “What happened?!”

Natsu looked down in shame, still holding Lucy’s hand. “I-I don’t know. I left class and was walking down the hallway and seen her like this.” His hand gripped hers tighter.

Jude was fuming, literally feeling the steam coming out of his ears. He shifted his craned his neck down to look at Makarov. “Had bullying always been a problem here?!”

“No it has not. Of course bullying does happen here, but never to this extent.” The short man explained, knowing no words could solace the man.

“And it just had to be my daughter huh.” Jude said in a low tone. “I’m taking Lucy home for the day, I might need to rethink this whole public school ordeal.” He didn’t miss the way the two teens looked at him with a hurt expression, the anger he felt masking any sort of remorse he felt.

He walked over to the blonde. “Lucy, are you able to walk?” When his daughter shook her head, he sighed. He looked over to Natsu.

“Can you help me get her in the car? I can’t lift her with my back.”

Without a second thought, Natsu was up on his feet. “Of course.”

Gently he slid one of his hands under her back while the other slipped behind her knees. She gave a pained look as he did so, making guilt rush through his veins.

Jude watched the whole scene. The way Natsu had tried to pick her up as carefully as he could without hurting her further, the way he cooed her when her features scrunched up in pain… it made the anger he felt recede just a bit.

That boy really cared for his daughter.

“I assure you Mr. Heartfilia we will get this whole case solved. Lets just all take a breather and regroup tomorrow.”

“Sounds like a plan.” He said before walking out the door, Natsu in suit of him.

The two walked in silence through the hallways. Natsu just looking at Lucy’s resting face looking for any signs if he was hurting her. Jude would steal a glance or two over to them, making sure he wasn’t hurting her.

After what seemed like hours of silence, Natsu spoke.

“… I’m sorry.”

Jude was so surprised he almost fell over. “What are you sorry about?”

Natsu held her closer to him. “I told you guys I would take care of Lucy… but I already failed.”

“It wasn’t your fault. You were in class.”

“I ditched class to make sure she was okay… but I didn’t get there in time.”

Jude sighed, heart warming at how hurt the pink haired student looked. “Look Natsu… bullying happens.” Jude opened the door, moving to the side so Natsu could slide Lucy into the passenger’s seat and buckled her in. “It could have been worse.”

He thanked Natsu before walking over to the drivers side, leaving him with words Natsu would never forget.

“She's… all I have left.”

Natsu remained silent, just watching as Jude revved the engine up to the vehicle, and began to drive away. Natsu’s lips were turned into a frown, trying to fight the guilt he felt.

“She’s all I have left too.” He whispered before he started to walk to his apartment, deciding to skip the rest of school for the day.

On his way home, he formulated ideas on how he was going to advert the problem. Many ideas popped in his mind… but they all turned out to be failures.

He groaned, walking into his apartment, throwing his school bag on his couch before plopping on it. He slumped further into the couch, eyebrows furrowing in thought. His gaze shifted over to the two pictures that rested on his intable.

“I don’t know what to do Igneel, Zeref-nii…” His eyes focused on the pictures, mind still concentrated on ways to help. “If you two were here… I bet you’d know what to do.”

Suddenly, an idea formed in his head. He grinned to himself. It might not be the best idea… but maybe it would help. Anything would help right now. He pulled out his phone and texted Gajeel.

Hey Lug-nut! Can you make me something and bring it to school tomorrow?

“Here you are Principal Makarov.” Jude said handing a piece of paper over to the short man. “I had Lucy write down what happened yesterday.”

The old principal immediately took the sheet of paper, scanning it over with his eyes. “So, you caught Kyoga, Briar, and Mary smoking in the bathroom and they viciously attacked you for seeing them?”

Lucy nodded her head, lips turning down at the memory. Makarov sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Theres only one problem… we didn’t see them do it. Its not that I don’t trust you Lucy, we just need evidence.”

“Evidence?!” Jude shouted. “What other evidence do you need besides the bruises and emotional scars that they left on my daughter?!”

“Mr. Heartfilia, I will bring the three girls in here for questioning but since there is no witness besides Lucy if they deny it then there is nothing I can do.”

“This is ridiculous.” Lucy’s father scowled. “If something like this happens again I will notify the police and take Lucy out of this establishment.”

Makarov held up his hand. “To prevent the incident from ever occurring again, I came up with a solution.”

Jude quirked a questioning eyebrow. “Oh? And pray tell what is this idea?”

As if on queue, the door opened revealing a pink haired teen.

“Yo gramps! You called?” Natsu walked into the office, mood brightening as he saw Lucy looking back at him with a smile on her lips.

“Yes Natsu, please sit.” He waited for Natsu to take a seat next to Lucy, offering her a bright smile as he did so. “As you know what happened yesterday with Lucy is quite tragic. With all the solutions I thought of, I figured this one would work out the best.”

“Oh?” Natsu looked to the principal confused. “What are ya yammerin’ on about Gramps?”

“I would like you to be Lucy’s escort from class to class. I’ll give you a pass that says you’re allowed to leave and be late to class for five minutes only.” He explained looking very seriously at the pink haired teen. “Think you could do that for me?”

“Well duh.” Natsu replied as if he was offended that Makarov would even ask if he wanted to do it. “I promised to protect Lucy with me life, and I’m going to keep it.”

The corner of Lucy’s lips turned into a soft smile at the pink haired teen. She couldn’t believe how truly blessed she was that she had met someone that cares about her so deeply… it made the butterflies in her stomach race.

“Excellent.” Makarov said with confidence. “Now, I believe you two should head on over to class first period is almost over.”

The two teens nodded standing up at their principals request. Before heading out, Lucy bent over to kiss her father on the cheek.

“Have a great day at school dear.” He said as they retreated out the door. His attention turned back to Makarov.

“So principal Makarov. Any other ideas of how to catch these bullies in action?”

“Man it bites we had to waste one of the two classes we had together in the principal’s office.” Natsu whined walking Lucy to her next class. She nodded in agreement. He looked over at her. Her brown eyes glistening with content, bringing out the light pink sweater she wore along with her black pleated skirt. Her ankle high black boots were the only sounds coming from her. Natsu gulped, his face reddening just at the sight of her.

How could one girl be so beautiful?

“Hey Luce…” Natsu stopped walking. Noticing his lack of movement, Lucy stopped and looking at him with a concerned expression. “I’m… sorry for not being there yesterday.”

Lucy’s expression fell, looking at the teen; heart panging with sorrow at his hurt expression. She walked over to him, placing a hand on his arm giving him a soft smile assuring him it was okay.

“I… wanted to make sure that it never happened again.” Lucy watched as Natsu fished around in his pocket, pulling out an item. When he showed her it, Lucy’s hands instantly flew to her mouth.

It was a whistle. A metal whistle that looked like it was dyed blue with a pink ‘L’ carved into the side.

“I had Gajeel make this whistle… and make it blue since its your favorite color.” He explained, cheeks reddening at his words. “If you’re ever in trouble just blow it. No one may be able to hear your voice, but they will sure as hell hear this.”

Lucy felt tears burn the back of her eyes. He had done this for her? She looked up at him, allowing him to put the whistle on her. Lucy lifted her hair, letting the cool metal fall on her exposed skin. A large hand caressing her cheek brought her out of her thoughts.

“I never want to see you like I did yesterday… never.”

Lucy felt Natsu’s warm lips on her forehead, making her eyes grow wide. The bell rang, making Natsu pull away from her. Lucy frowned at the loss of contact with him.

“I’ll see you next period Luce!” Natsu casually said with a two finger salute, walking the other way to his class. Lucy just stood there, shock evident on her features. She smiled softly, holding the metal whistle in her hands.

She never thought she would be this happy again.
