Please welcome Michael Perkola to the Joy Yoga Center family!

Michael Perkola is a teacher of meditation and yoga. He has sought self-awareness and self-mastery through meditation and martial arts since his teenage years. Now in his thirties, meditation plus yoga have become his chosen methods of integrating and strengthening the body, mind, and spirit. He finds robust health and deep meaning through these practices. His students can expect to cultivate self-awareness, health, and longevity.

Michael earned his Registered Yoga Teacher 200-hour certification in Baptiste Power Yoga in early 2012. He continues to advance his yoga practice and instruction by studying therapeutic yoga (Pralaya Yoga System) and Ashtanga Yoga.

Michael was born in Houston and is proud to call this city his home. He lived in Tokyo, Japan for two periods of his life, totaling 4.5 years. Aside from being a health nut and “Zen monk”, he is not so secretly a big nerd for sci-fi books, anime, and comic book movies.

Been practicing at Joy Yoga for a couple of months now. Kate and Cindy are awesome at the front desk check-in area. Always happy and smiling!! Michael and Larry are great instructors (not saying the others are not, just have the most experience with them) that are very aware of their students. They are genuinely concerned that their students are properly practicing the art of Yoga rather than simply barking out commands. It has been a very positive experience and recommend it to anyone interested in Yoga!

Don’t tell my boyfriend, but I’m in love with Joy Yoga. I can’t think of any other place that I rather be than with Joy.

I’ve been a member since August 2012, and it’s personally my favorite yoga studio in both the city of Austin and Houston.

Awesome things about them:
1. Forgot your mat? No worries, they have mats to borrow - at NO charge!
2. Don’t have a mat? They’ve got some for sale.
3. Forgot your water bottle or all of a sudden starving? They’ve got drinks and food for purchase.
4. New to yoga? They have classes of all levels, and offer modifications at almost all the classes I’ve been to.
5. Looking for a serious workout? Go to Natalie Naisel’s class. W. O. W. and I thought I was semi-fit! Her classes are amazing and total body workout.
6. Looking for a more peaceful workout? Candlelight flow is seriously where it’s at. I’ve only been to one so far, but I haven’t felt so relaxed in ages.

All the teacher’s I’ve had have been super knowledgeable, helpful, patient, and just a Joy to be around. 5/5, would recommend to everyone I know.

Our new JYC teacher of the day is Lauren Donelson! If you haven’t met Lauren, today is the perfect opportunity. Lauren is subbing at Voss today at 9:00 am, 10:30 am, and 12:00 pm. See you there!

Lauren found yoga shortly after moving to New York City for university. Yoga has continually helped Lauren live with more grace, peace and power, on the mat and in her life. Lauren is a certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher with more than 600 hours of vinyasa yoga training. Becoming a teacher challenged her to experience awakening in her practice, find breath in each movement, and live with contentment. She is eternally grateful for the many teachers that have helped her along her path, especially Sharon Gannon, David Life, Yogeswari, and Cat Acquaviva. Lauren believes that yoga will change your life. All you have to do is show up.

Lauren is currently living and teaching yoga in Houston, Texas

In case you’re having “the Mondays,” here are a bunch of animals jumping on trampolines. Jump for joy, y'all! You’re welcome.
