Jusepe de Ribera, The Penitent Saint Peter, c. 1612-3

Discovered by an Italian art historian just a year ago and recently purchased,  “The Penitent Saint Peter” is the second canvas by Ribera to enter the Met’s collection. Paintings from this period rarely come on the market, so when the Madrid dealers Coll & Cortés approached the museum about this painting, the curators jumped. Met officials declined to say what they paid for it, but dealers in the field said they believed the asking price was nearly $1.3 million. - New York Times

This early Ribera painting now gives the Met a link between Caravaggio and young Velázquez, so they can tell the story of Spanish painting more fully. (Mr. Salomon)
