jose villarubia

I still have this issue of Wizard from 2004 where they got gay comics creators Phil Jimenez, Robert Rodi, and Jose Villarubia to “make over” various heroes and villains. This was back when Grant Morrison was finishing his run on New X-Men with Here Comes Tomorrow. If anybody wants me to upload better pictures so that the commentary is more visible then I will, but I just wanted to showcase the awesome designs by Jimenez (Galactus is obviously a joke).

The covers and several pages from King Conan: The Phoenix on the Sword (2012) by Truman, Giorello, Villarubia, Starkings and Comicraft, and Simon. Covers by Andrew Robinson.

I was really bummed when Dark Horse took this creative team off of the main Conan book but luckily, we have these King Conan minis to fill the void. The story is pretty slight here, but it provides Giorello ample chance to strut his stuff. And what amazing stuff it is. I think he’s one of the most under-appreciated artists going. He’s equally adept at facial expressions, backgrounds and ‘set design’, and the bloody ultraviolence that’s integral to the character. Jose Villarubia’s excellent coloring goes along with the whole package perfectly. Now I have to catch up on the same crew’s King Conan: Hour of the Dragon before King Conan: The Conqueror comes out next month!
