Known for his fantastical and dreamy illustrations and drawings –from bird headed warriors to out of this world landscapes with cosmic skies and mystical female warrior / priestesses, Oakland based artist Jon Carling has filled endless sketchbooks with his unique imagination. Carling’s early love of music has influenced his artistic and creative processes, from creating and trading fanzines to collaborating with various bands such as The Brian Jonestown Massacre to Dead Meadows. We were glad to have Jon on our Vans Art Spotlight where he talks about sketching in the shower, growing up with music, and getting out of a creative rut.
We have no doubt his interview will inspire you to fill your own sketchbooks!
It’s late and India is being planned
with toothpick battles happening
in my breast pocket, something extra
from an illustrator, a favorite. The
parcel packaged a book and more.
A business card, a postcard, a drawing.
I drift in make believe in between lines
on my 1080 W2 tax delay number race.
Money all the country,
flying daggers direct deposit.
Like I said, it’s late.
Like I said, I’m leaving for India
in a month and some days,
where I’ll celebrate a year of
labyrinths and sacred lakes,
my journal looking for
traincar sweat and cobra eggs.
I realized I didn’t share this. If I haven’t made it obvious by now, I’m a big Jon Carling fan and becoming more and more interested as the days go by. With that said, my beautiful, amazing girlfriend got me Volume One of Jon Carling’s Sketchbook Exhibits for Christmas. I absolutely love it.
