You nervously stood at the side of the stage. You were at Benny’s bar and it was karaoke night. Nervously you fiddled with your phone, glancing up your breathing hitched once you saw the person who had your heart in his hands and crushed it.
Anthony Ramos. He didn’t see you, thankfully, but you noticed the girl with him he had his arm around her as they sat at a booth in the corner. Knots twisted in your stomach as you suddenly felt the urge to back out. Your friend Benny who owns the bar insisted on you singing claiming you had a wonderful voice.
“Your up Y/N.” Your friend Benny stated, handing you a mic. Smiling very little you felt your hands shake. Benny looked worried. “You’ll do great. Knock ‘em dead!” He encouraged you. Nodding you walked onto the stage the light on you.
“Um, hello.” You began, gaining the attention of view of the bar occupants. “I-I’m Y/N and I’m going to sing a song most of you may know it’s called Someone Like You by Adele.” You stated. You looked out at the crowd and felt your heart skip a beat when you saw Anthony looking at you. His face couldn’t contain the look of surprise he had of seeing you there.
The music began to play as you put the mic on the mic stand adjusting it ever so slightly.
“I heard that you settled down. That you found a girl and your married now.” You sang, your eyes glazing over. “I heard that your dreams came true. Guess she gave you things….I didn’t give to you.” Your vision clouded as a memory swept through them.
You sat at the café with your friend Oak who’s friends with Anthony and yourself.
He did it…..You thought to yourself. He finally gets to do what he wanted, he’s preforming on stage where he belongs, under the spotlight.
“Are you okay?” Oak asks you.
“I’m fine Oak.” You giggled and smiled at him though it was fake. “Continue.” You urged him. He nodded hesitantly. Oak went on to tell you about the girl Anthony started seeing. Jasmine.
They looked so happy. You’ve never seen Anthony that happy before. I guess you just didn’t give him everything he wanted but you tried, boy did you try to make both of your lives right and happy.
“Old friend, why are you so shy? It ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light.”
You and Anthony gone way back. Both of you grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same school. Both of you were best friends before you started dating in your senior year of high school. You used to be inseparable.
After the endings of your relationship you tried being friends again but every time you tried talking to him he didn’t talk as much. Always keeping the conversation short and leaves with excuses that he has to meet with someone, every single time. So that end of hope quickly dropped.
“I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited but I couldn’t stay away, I couldn't’ fight it, I had hope you’d see my face and you’d be reminded that for it isn’t over.” Your eyes glazed over feeling your heart pound in your chest, sweat threatening to slide down your face. “Never mind I’ll find someone like you, I hope nothing but the best for you too,” You dared to look at Anthony who looked speechless and sad.
“Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said, ‘Sometimes it last in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.’ Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.”
You laid there on the blanket, your head rested on Anthony’s shoulder with his arm around you.
“I love you.” He whispered. His voice was so quiet you almost didn’t catch it. Your lips quirked upwards.
“I love you too.”
“Can I tell you something?” He asked. You nodded, your eyes going up to his face. “Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.” He stated. “That’s what I heard people say to me about being with you.”
“Anthony” You began tilting his face so he was looking at you. “I would never hurt you.” He smiled.
“I know. But it’s true. It always ends one way or another. Either your happy and you’re together ‘til the end or you just get hurt instead. I love you Y/N and I want this to last.” He tells you, grabbing your hand, bringing it up to his lips and kissing it lightly. You smiled, leaning up your kissed his perfect lips.
“I love you so much.” You told him, truthfully. He moved so he was hovering over you with that adorable smile on his freckled face.
“I love you.” His lips touched your ever so lightly but sparks always flied.
“You know how the time flies, only yesterday was the times of our lives. We were born and raised in a summer haze, bound by the surprise of our glory days…” You felt your mind flood back to the memories you use to cherish for so long.
It was the summer before your senior year in high school, your family was going away for the summer and allowed Anthony to go with to the cabin.
“Come on Y/N your so slow!” Anthony laughed.
“Hey that’s no fair you’re faster than me.” You stated as you ran after your friend down to the lake. Anthony reached the dock before you did and quickly kicked his shoes off and pulled his shirt of before jumping into the water. You kicked off your flip flops off and looked in the water for Anthony but you couldn’t see him.
“Anthony!” You yelled getting close to the edge, squatting down. Suddenly he rose from the water and grabbed your arm. You screamed as you were pulled into the water with your clothes on. You came up above water where Anthony was laughing his ass off. “My clothes!” You exclaimed trying to scramble out of the water. A hand pulling you away from the dock made you look at Anthony, his short curly hair stuck down as it was soaked. “What was that for?” You pouted. He laughed.
“I don’t know but it was hilarious!” Rolling your eyes you splashed him. You instantly regretted it once you saw the look on Anthony’s face.
He came towards you but you backed away as he started splashing you. You squealed as you suddenly were lifted up.
“Anthony!” You laughed as he threw you a few feet away in the water. Once you rose back above the water you stuck your head out at him.
“I hate you.” He chuckled and swam towards you.
“No you don’t.” He stated.
“So? What’s your point?” You asked him, as suddenly he was really close. You felt your face heat up.
“Y/N?” He asked you suddenly sounding uncertain.
“Yeah?” You asked, your voice quieter than before, staring into Anthony’s eyes before they flickered to his lips. Anthony slowly leaned in, hesitant. You met half way. That was the moment you and Anthony shared your first kiss and so many more happened after that, that summer.
“I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited, but I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it, I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded that for me it isn’t over. Never mind I’ll find someone like you, I wish nothing but the best for you too. Don’t forget me I beg, I remember you said ‘ Sometimes it last in love but sometimes it hurts instead.’” Tears slowly slid down your face.
Your shift at the diner ended so you made your way inside your apartment where Anthony should be.
“Hey babe!” You greeted your boyfriend. He gave you a small ‘hey.’ You sat down next to him on the sofa where he was watching a basketball game. “Are you okay?” You had asked.
Something was off.
“Yeah everything is great, can I get back to my game now?” He asked, not looking at you once.
“Um yeah. Of course! I’ll just start making dinner.” You stated, standing and going to the kitchen. Your feelings were hurt. He never acted this way towards you before.
Did you do something wrong? Did you make him angry?
He usually will tell you straight away if he was upset with you, so maybe he was just having a bad day?
Dinner was quiet aside from the sound of metal silverware clanking together.
“Ant, are you okay? Are you not feeling well? Did I do something wrong?” You asked your boyfriend worriedly.
“I’m fine.” He stated blandly.
“I said I’m fine!” His outburst startled you. Guilt and anger twisted inside him. “I’m sorry.” He said, getting up and leaving. Anthony slid his shoes on and put his coat on.
“Wait Anthony where are you going?” You stood up from your chair as tears stung your eyes.
“Out.” Was all he said before the door slammed shut.
“Nothing compares, no worries or cares, no regrets and mistakes, they’ re memories made. Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?”
You laughed at some corny joke Anthony just made. A bottle of wine open and half empty. You were both drunk while you laid in his arms while he told you jokes and stories.
“I lurvvv you.” His voice slurred. Giggling you kissed his cheek.
“I looovee you too.” You slurred.
“What about this one!” Anthony pointed at an ad on the newspaper. “The rent is affordable and look! Two bathrooms!” He exclaimed, you laughed.
“I’ll make a call so we can check it out.” You stated, pulling out your phone. ANnhony wrapped his arms around you and spun you around as you laughed.
“This one’s the one I’m telling you!” He says, speaking of the first apartment you two would hopefully be moving into.
Your leg bounced, clutching John’s hand tightly as you sat on the toilet lid in the bathroom waiting for the results.
“I think it’s been 5 minutes.” Anthony stated. You nodded. “Hey…” You looked at him, “If it does come back positive just know I will still love you and the baby.” You smiled at him before picking up the first test. You shook your head, dropping it into the waste basket. Picking up the second and third they all read the same.
You felt disappointed.
“Hey are you okay?” Anthony asked, rubbing his thumb over your head to ease your nerves. You nodded.
“I know we’re not ready to have kids but I actually hoped it came back positive.” You admitted.
“Me too.” You looked at him surprised.
“Really?” He nodded.
“I’ve always wanted to have a kid of my own, especially if it’s with you,” Your face went red. “But I think this is a good thing, we’re both not ready, but I promise the moment we are we can make 10 babies if you want.” You chuckled, you lent down and kissed him.
“I love you.”
“I love you more.” Anthony admitted.
“Never mind I’ll find someone like you, I wish nothing but the best for you too, don’t forget me I beg. I remember you said, ‘Sometimes it last in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”
Anthony watched your performance. You were crying as you sang. He felt his own heart break at the sight of you. One thing he felt was regret. He had you and lost you and it was all his fault.
“Never mind I’ll find someone like you, I wish nothing but the best for you too. Don’t forget me I beg, I’ll remember you say, “Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead. Sometimes it last in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.”
Anthony didn’t come that night. You were worried sick and haven’t slept for a minute that night. Bags hung under your eyes because of it. You had to go to work but your tried to call Anthony again but it was of course no use, he didn’t answer.
You came back from work exhausted. When you opened the door to the apartment it was already unlocked. Worriedly you peeked your head in and saw the bags by the door. Looking confused you walked inside.
“Anthony?” You called for him. He came out of the bathroom with his things.
“W-Where are you going?” You asked him. “I-I called….I was worried.”
“I’m leaving.” He stated, not looking you in the eye.
“What?” Your voice cracked.
“I said I’m leaving.” He stated once again before shoving things into his bag.
“Why?” He shook his head.
“I just can’t do this anymore, Y/N, I’m sorry.” He told you, picking up his bags he walked passed you as your shoulders shook, looking down the tears slid and gently dripped to the hard wood floor. Once the door closed you broke down into sobs. Your legs gave way causing you to drop to the floor. Hands balled into fist you clenched them tightly as you sobs racked your body.
The song has ended and you were back in reality as everyone in the bar clapped and cheered. You smiled faintly before getting off stage wiping the tears away.
“Come here.” Benny’s arms were already open for you. You quietly cried as you still weren’t over that pain, it’s been 6 months.
Anthony saw you crying and wanted to go over and comfort you. But this was his fault. Every word you sang was a pang to his heart. He should be the one to comfort you but he’s the reason why you’re crying.
“Anthony.” Jasmine’s voice drew Anthony’s attention temporarily away from you.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, of course, why?” He asked.
“Because you look like you want to cry.” Jasmine told him.
And it was true.
“I’m sorry.” He nervously chuckled. “I was just thinking of something.” He told her.
“Are you sure?” He nodded wrapping an arm around her he kissed her cheek causing her to smile at him, he smiled back but it didn’t reach his eyes.
You wiped your tears away.
Though it hurt, singing that song felt good, allowing you to let out the feelings you bottled up for 6 months. Maybe now you can move on. Your phone buzzed in your pocket, pulling it out you saw a text from Oak.
‘Benny told me what happened, are you okay?’ ~ Oak
Johnson had known - forever, it seems - that he was apart of a two-dimensional narrative construct that would be dominated by hockey and pie. Accepting his own irrelevance to the narrative had, for some time, driven him crazy.
Would he continue to exist without regular presence in the story’s panels?
Would he develop a strong enough personality to find life in the extra-canon creations of their readers? Or would his life end with the final canon work?
Would he be afforded the privilege of family and career that came with charming and rich characterization or…would he fade back into the fathomless ether from which he’d been imagined.
He’d figured he’d find out the answer to those questions after graduation and his exit from both main and side plots at Samwell.
And he did:
He was alive and well!
Somehow his acceptance of his own fictionality and inability to stay quiet about it had, indeed, earned him warm regards in the hearts of the readers.
He hadn’t faded into the ether! He also hadn’t…developed a family or love interest, and the career thing was still vague. He got the general notion that he was doing well, though.
And, while he waited for some sort of generally accepted future to manifest itself, he had been unanimously imbued with a power that made all of the existential crisis worth it: inexplicable plot device!
Or as he preferred to call it: The Love Spell
It was like handing out Dibs all over the place:
After watching Ransom stoically avoid pressuring Holster into moving with him after graduation and watching Holster quietly stress over his inability to find a job near Ransom, Johnson was pleased to send Holster an email connecting him with his “cousin” who knew of x opportunity.
The job of course included relocation services that would find him a new apartment and cover the expenses for the first year of his employment.
It made no sense. It was too convenient. The boys never questioned it.
And Johnson got to watch the stress ease from both of their shoulders as Ransom got to make the necessary and welcome changes to The Spreadsheet.
On a bright spring morning, it’s Johnson who posts the “Class Cancelled” sign that sends Dex back across campus an hour and a half early.
It means that as Dex blearily makes his way back up the Haus stairs, he runs smack dab into deliciously dripping Nursey making his way back across the hall from the bathroom.
Honey-hued sunlight streams through Nurse’s doorway. It makes his already gorgeous skin glow and his green eyes sparkle.
Half naked Nursey is nothing new - but without the distraction of aging plumbing, unwashed socks, and obnoxiously placed jock-straps, Dex finds himself captivated.
The smile curling Nursey’s mouth makes it pretty clear that Dex’s fascination is no mean unwelcome.
Johnson switches Kent’s reservation.
He doesn’t even give the receptionist an excuse - just a message to give Kent when he arrives to check in.
“For your remarkable performance this year, your team has upgraded your reservation to our sister hotel for the duration of your stay for the Charity Game Weekend.”
He has a gift card for the hotel restaurant shortly after the Falc’s charity squad gets settled.
The blush that rises on Kent’s cheeks when he hears the boisterous “Kent Parson of ze Aces! Zis is a surprise indeed!” is visible from where Johnson is de-materializing through the back wall.
The sudden clang of bar hitting rack catches Johnson by surprise. He spins around, heart pounding.
“What the hell, my man!”
Two heavy brows arch over heavily lined eyes.
“Bro, I’m not the one apparating through walls here.”
Bench-Presser’s eyes are iridescent - seeming to slide between blue and green before Johnson’s eyes.
“I’ve…..I’ve never been caught before.”
“Huh. So. You a Death Eater?”
“Uh. No. No. I’m less Hogwarts alumn, more Love Potion #9 peddler.”
Bench-Presser licks sweat from his upper lip. Johnson follows the movement. Thoughts of objective attractiveness flit through his mind.
“Love Potion #9? Big consent issues there.”
“I, uh, no - not like - there’s no forced sex or anything. Just dropping some plot devices - opportunities for characters to make choices, take risks.”
“Mmm,” Bench-Presser hums, dragging those agate eyes over Johnson, head to toe and back again. “So, your first time being caught. What does that make this?”
