Eddie Vedder Facts
  1. Eddie Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson in Evanston, Illinois on December 23rd, 1964. His sign is Capricorn
  2. His parents divorced in 1965, when Eddie was only one. His mother remarried a man named Peter Mueller.
  3. Since his parents divorced when he was just a baby, Eddie believed that Peter was his real father, so he went by the name Eddie Mueller for a while.
  4. Eddie’s family fostered seven younger children in a group home.
  5. In the mid 1970′s the family moved to San Diego, California.
  6. Eddie received a guitar from his mother on his twelfth birthday and began turning to music as a source of comfort.
  7. He loved The Who’s 1973 album, Quadrophenia. He once said: “When I was 15 or 16, I felt alone, I was all alone except for music.”
  8. When Eddie was in his late teen, his mother and Peter divorced. This caused his mother to move back to the Chicago area with his brothers. However Eddie stayed with his stepfather in California so that he did not need to change schools.
  9. After the divorce of his mother and Peter, Eddie finally learned about who his real father was. By the time that Eddie had learned about his real father, his father had died of sclerosis.
  10. By his senior year in high school, Eddie was living on his own. He lived in an apartment and supported himself with a job at a drug store.
  11. He dropped out of high school in senior year due to the pressures of school and work. This is when he rejoined his family in Chicago, and when he changed his last name to Vedder. Vedder is his mother’s maiden name.
  12. While working as a waiter in the 1980s, Eddie earned his GED and did attend college near Chicago for a brief time.
  13. Pearl Jam, Eddie’s main band, was formed in 1990. Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard, and Mike McCready first formed the band, and took in Eddie. They tried three different drummers, Matt Cameron, Dave Abbruzzese being two. 
  14. The original name of the band was Mookie Blaylock. They had to change the name when the band signed to Epic Records in 1991. 
  15. The Ten album is named after Blaylock’s jersey number.
  16. Eddie became friends with Chris Cornell in the early 90s, and was even featured in a few songs of Temple of the Dog. Stone Gossard also played guitar in this band.
  17. Eddie had a brief acting cameo in the 1992 movie Singles, along with Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard. He appeared as himself.
  18. Eddie experimented with drugs during his early fame, and in several interviews can be seen as very drunk/stoned. In an early 90′s interview, high on what is assumed to be acid, Eddie acting quite goofy. While introducing himself, he said “I’m Eddie Vedder…I sing, I DO!!”, he also stated how Chris cornell was “satan” and he and Stone Gossard agreed Chris had a nice chest.
  19. In 1996, Eddie was interviewed in a grunge documentary, Hype!. He is also seen in the 2003 Ramones documentary, a cameo in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Runnin’ Down a Dream, Slacker Uprising, and The People Speak in other years.
  20. Eddie is very vocal in his social and political views. He is pro-choice, and seems to be on the left side. Eddie is a surfer and is active in the surf related conservation efforts. He shows his support for environmental activism by having a Earth First! tattoo on his right calf, which is a logo of a pipe wrench crossed with a stone hammer. 
  21. Eddie is also a vegetarian.
  22. During a Smashing Pumpkins concert, John Schilling (manager) and Eddie dressed as fangirls for Billy Corgan (vocals for Smashing Pumpkins.) On Eddie’s stomach it is written “Billy, I’m Yours!”
  23. Many of Eddie’s lyrics have invoked the use of storytelling and have included freedom, individualism, and sympathy for troubled people. One instance of this is the song “Jeremy” which is about Jeremy Delle, a 16 year old boy who killed himself in front of his English class at Richardson High School in Richardson, Texas on January 8, 1991.
  24. Eddie has also played guitar on many of the Pearl Jam songs. One being “Rearviewmirror”.
  25. In 1994, Eddie married his longtime girlfriend musician Beth Liebling, but they divorced in 2000.
  26. Eddie was very close friends with Chris Cornell, lead singer of Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and Soundgarden. Chris passed in May 2017, and Eddie is still grieving.
  27. Eddie took on many solo projects, one being the Into the Wild movie soundtrack. 
  28. Eddie was close friends with Johnny Ramone and was with him when he died. Eddie can be heard playing Ramone songs as tribute in live songs. When driving home from Johnny’s funeral, he wrong “Life Wasted”, a Pearl Jam song.
  29. The song “Yellow Ledbetter” is a tongue twister and Eddie is known to play this song at the end of concerts, each in a different set of lyrics. 
  30. Eddie loved to climb, yell, jump and be filled with energy when performing.
  31. Eddie married Jill McCormick in 2010 and is still married to her. They have two children, Harper Vedder and Olivia Vedder. 
  32. Eddie still tours with Pearl Jam, but not as often as in the past.
