Dark Horse Comics Lady Killer mini series (compiled into a
perfect bound graphic novel edition) is written by Jamie S. Rich and Joelle
Jones, and masterfully drawn by Ms. Jones herself.
The gritty (and bloody!)
story deals with a Mad Men era suburban Seattle housewife who’s actually a CIA
Artist Joelle Jones explains how she playfully put together a series
of vintage ad mockups while doing research for the project, shown above (with
additional hand lettering by Crank). The mini-series is a dark delight, just as
these playfully grim ads are. This isn’t a comics blog, of course. And Rich and Jones’ mini series won’t be for everyone. But the art is still terrific, and those ads are fun. The illustration style and typography is strictly now, but the coloring and general ‘feel’ are pure retro. And we’ll admit it: We love retro, and get a real kick out of seeing contemporary tweaks and twists of vintage 20th century design, illustration and photographic tropes. I love how creatively Dear White People is filmed and that each episode is slightly thematically different based on the central protagonist. Gabe’s replicates old films because he loves movies, Lionel is an introverted thinker so his process shows him creating scenes with his imagination, Coco is reconciling her past with her future so we get a lot of flashbacks, Sam has a strong personal drive but inner confusion so her episodes are the least linear, jumping back and forward with less structure.
Sam’s lightskin privilege effects her romantic life. Coco knows none of the white guys will take her home to meet their parents then she has struggles to get black men to respect her. Joelle struggling to get a black man to see her. Sam’s lightskiness makes her appetizing to black men and whiteness.
Sam is only woke when she’s talk about her disadvantages but not her privileges. Even her slick comment about Coco needing money for her hair when she was wearing her natural 4C hair has me tight.
The Hwarang Cast - aka Yoonwoo, Jihan, Minho, Hyungsik and Seojun (apparently the last two)
Kai is there.
Taemin is there.
I’m just so so weak for these friends supporting each other. How did they even manage to get tickets?? I’m sure the tickets sold out within like a minute or two considering how much the fandom has grown.
