In 1943, Ward Greene,
editor and manager of King Features, published the short story, Happy Dan, The Whistling Dog, in an issue of Cosmopolitan magazine. After Walt Disney read the story, he contacted Greene, asking him to develop it into a full-length novel on which to base a film.
The resulting novel,
Lady and the Tramp: The Story of Two Dogs,
featured illustrations by Joe Rinaldi, one of Disney’s greatest story artists. It was published in 1953, two years before the release of Walt Disney’s feature film,
Lady and the Tramp.
