Ships, monsters and mermaids pop out of books handcrafted by Pennsylvania-based artist Jodi Harvey-Brown (aka wetcanvas). Taking inspiration from the materials themselves, each three-dimensional scene the sculptor constructs reflects popular works of fiction. Whether it’s a calm depiction of an outing from The Wind in the Willows or a rigorous struggle from The Old Man and the Sea, there is a sense of motion in the simulated waves.

From Moby-Dick and Tom Sawyer to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Harvey-Brown manages to capture the momentous and memorable action of each respective novel as they emerge out of the two-dimensional surface of the text and reconfigure themselves as three-dimensional structures. Placing her piece atop open-faced books heightens the imagery, allowing one’s imagination to excitedly revel in the visual.
