jobs 2013

Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes, the ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things - they push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.

Blog Created: 2013 I think?

If anyone wants to do this go ahead and say I tagged you! I don’t feel like singling anyone out for this atm!

he was hired as a temp at my job in 2013. after a couple months of flirting, I got the courage to tell him I was interested in seeing him outside of the office. our chemistry was insane and I wanted to see where it could lead. he warned me that he wasn’t interested in anything serious but I didn’t care. we kept it a secret from our friends/coworkers and saw each other nearly 3x a week, sometimes more often. most of the time he would come over with groceries and cook us dinner. we’d eat and I’d show him a movie or tv show that I thought he would like and he would stay the night. we’d show up to work together with dinner leftovers for lunch and pretend like we hardly knew one another. on weekends, we’d go out together… dinner, drinks, etc. he came to a friends birthday with me, too. this went on for 7 months. he stayed over so frequently that he had a toothbrush at my place. we were considering a trip to VT together… I knew things had changed for me but was too afraid to admit it and risk losing him altogether. I didn’t want to scare him off.

he ended up being let go as a temp to make room for a full-time hire. we stayed in touch but the truth of our relationship ended up getting revealed to our mutual friends at work. it made things awkward. we spent a few weeks not speaking but he asked to see me and I couldn’t resist. we went out for drinks and he told me he hoped I wasn’t dating anyone and how he had big plans for us spending the summer together, him showing me off at parties and us being lazy on the beach. I told him he didn’t have the right to act like we’re dating when he couldn’t even admit the truth to anyone. I found out later that when he was asked about “us” he told our friend that I was just a booty call. the last time I saw him, our friend was quitting and invited us all to one last happy hour. He told me he missed what we had and how sorry he was that he fucked everything up.

a year later, he reached out again. I entertained the idea but the timing was bad every time he texted me. the last time I spoke to him was 2 days before my birthday last year. he didn’t even wish me a happy birthday. the sad part is that I think about him often and despite our relationship never being legitimate, I still think of it as one of the best relationships I’ve had.

I graduated high school in 2012

Financial aid was giving us problems. Scheduling caused problems. My family had problems

From then to the end of 2013’s fall semester, I had maybe 13 collective credits.

I got a job in October of 2013. My grades started to suffer and I had to make a choice. Get promoted at my job or go back to school because I couldn’t do both.

I’m still at my job, finally making an okay amount for myself and all I hear is go back to college. That life ain’t for me. School isn’t for me.

To those of you who school is for, I congratulate you.

To those of us who aren’t made for it, I understand you.

I can’t look down on anyone who dropped out. I don’t look up to those who stuck it out. However, I do applaud of you who are doing what you can

When you grow up, you tend to get told that the world is the way it is, and your life is just to live your life inside the world. Try not to bash into the walls too much. Try to have a nice family life. Have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is everything around that you call life was made up by people who were no smarter than you. And you can change it. You can influence it. You can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

I haven’t looked at how much puberty hit me in a while

As exciting as it is that computer science is getting more attention in hollywood and the stories of some very important computer scientists are being told (especially Alan Turing’s) I can’t help but be disappointed and a bit concerned that all of these movies and shows have one thing in common, white male leads. (other than Benedict Cumberbatch in like two of them?)

A lot of amazing women played an enormous role throughout history in making computer science what it is today. I wonder when we’ll get Oscar nominated blockbusters about Grace Hopper or Ada Lovelace or Kyla McMullen or Hedy Lemarr or any of the countless other women who have revolutionized or are revolutionizing computer science.

(I know Stephen Hawking isn’t a computer scientist but I included The Theory of Everything because I think the same can be said about biopics about all scientists in general, hollywood still remains pretty biased and tends to stick to telling the stories of white men. That being said professor Hawking’s story is still amazing and inspiring)

one of my weird mundane superpowers is getting hired for random jobs accidentally

see: 2013, when the bar near campus stayed open late for my friends and i, and i drunkenly insisted on helping the closing server pile up everyone’s shotglasses and ended up working there until i moved to california

see: yesterday, when i bought a donut for a homeless woman and ended up getting hired to tutor the daughter of the owner of the donut place
