The Lord of the Wedding Rings: The Return of the King - iguana’s 2017 HELLsinki Worlds recap
This is it guys, the last big competition before the Olympics. So much potential for great skates, great disasters and great distress; this competition did not fail to deliver. Nor did the announcers, who were screaming out names and scores as if it were a wrestling match. And it was, in one way or another. Albeit a sparklier one. For a brief couple of days, we thought Javier Fernandez was gonna win his 3rd consecutive World title and I almost had those memes ready but at the same time I knew coming from behind like a wrecking ball was Yuzuru Hanyu’s specialty. To nobody’s surprise Evgenia Medvedeva broke a record; to everyone’s surprise, she only broke it in the long program. Meanwhile, Wenjing Sui and Cong Han’s blues for koolk brought the pairs crown back to China and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir purple rained on Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron’s parade. Let’s start the recap!
“Here are three women that have competed against each other - they’re from three different continents, they all wanted different things. And there they are, just enjoying being together and feeling not so alone on the ice anymore. … And through this world collaboration, they can send the message of, ‘If we work together with kindness and strength, we can create peace.’”
Last month we spent an unforgettable week in Kazakhstan. This was our first time visiting Denis Ten’s home country. Denis was one of the first friends we made at our first Junior Grand Prix back in 2008.
While this was the third year of #DenisTenAndFriends, this was the first year our schedule allowed us to skate in the show. It took us 28 hours, but it was definitely worth it. Almaty is a stunning city and the crowd was so welcoming and enthusiastic. The production of the show was impressive and a highlight for us was skating to a live orchestra for the first time. We spent time with old friends and had the opportunity to get to know skaters we’ve always admired. Many special memories were made with wonderful people. Denis was a fantastic host and his “friends” left feeling more like family.
Like Denis says, Kazakhstan is a very beautiful country. We can’t wait to return.
We hope you enjoy this video highlighting our experience!
