SUBMISSION: Check out this dress! It’s made with the same fabric as the Wishing Gown, and was designed by Joanna Johnston for Sally Field in Lincoln (2012) based on two dresses worn by Mary Todd Lincoln. Just something I thought you and your other followers might find interesting :)

MY COMMENT: Indeed! It’s a rare case of the print being used for screen costumes. It’s also appeared in The Forsyte Saga (blue), The Piano (purple) and Dangerous Liaisons (golden) - you can see photos of that here. It makes me so happy this fabric is still in use and still so *alive*. And it suited the crinoline style. Thank you for the exhibition photos! :)

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (2015) - Elizabeth Debicki as Victoria Vinciguerra wearing a black and white halterneck dress with jewelled belt, accessorized with pearl cluster pendant earrings, beaded rings and a gold bracelet. Later in the film, she pairs the dress with a black and white belted cape, sunglasses and printed silk scarf.

The costumes were designed by Joanna Johnston.

The elusive “Wishing” fabric

Originally said to be made exclusively for the 1986 musical “Phantom of the Opera”. Woven in India and hand dyed/printed in England, this silk fabric comes from a small husband-and-wife shop outside London. They collect antique fabrics and trims as well as reproducing elaborate materials, and they’re a favourite among film and stage designers. No wonder this specific stripy/floral rococo fabric has appeared in many movies and TV series, as well as on stage.
