Ambivalent

Pluck the perfumed petals
from your eyelids, carefully
casting them to the wind.
Everyone you know has
a delicate opinion and you’re
the one who always favors
to bask in sin, regretting
it later when your hands
are gnarled like silent oaks,
singing on your death bed
how slowly you were loved,
how quickly you were forgot.

This is the outro song from the EP I’m hoping to release in February. It’s my first successful attempt at recording myself using all of the equipment I was able to purchase thanks to the friends, family, and strangers who contributed to my Indiegogo campaign last year.

I learned a lot in the couple hours I spent recording this, and the next one will sound better and come together a little more quickly. But I’m just happy that I was able to record each section and splice it all together fairly well. I also discovered that my vocal mic picks up trains from several blocks away. I’m pretty sure I also heard someone picking their nose nearby while it was on (spoilers: it wasn’t me).

Anyway, I hope you like the song, even if it’s pretty rough.

Day 5: Tall Enough (Convalescence).

(Verse one and chorus of Convalescence.)

If there’s no sense in loving you,
Then there’s no sense in me.
Yeah, you talk real tall,
But that’s not tall enough for me.

Stepping lightly across the floor,
Sudden rain leaving leaves against your door.
But you don’t know ‘cause you’ve never been away from home;
And I’ll be long gone before you know.

This is an older song I never finished. I posted this video on Youtube the night I wrote it, more than a year ago.

You’re my electricity
And I’d like to feel you closer to me
You could show me the ropes tonight
With you I’d leave my heart and my hands tied

You could teach me your language, show me a verb or two
Give me your fingertips and let me press my lips
Against all those words you like to use

Day 3: Electricity.

You’re my electricity,
And I’d like to feel you closer to me.
You could show me the ropes tonight;
With you I’d leave my heart and my hands tied.

You could teach me your language,
Show me a verb or two.
Give me your fingertips,
And let me press my lips
Against all those words you like to use.

I’m going to be recording a bunch of my songs in the coming days for my producer to get a better feel for the album and what he’ll be working with. These demos are super rough – literally recorded on my phone – and there’ll be mistakes aplenty, but there’s no reason you can’t take a listen, if you’d like.

Day 2: Sheltered Bones.

Shelter these bones,
Leave my dust alone.
I’m shedding skin like wax,
Like wood beneath the axe.
Would you call my situation a heart attack?
Will you keep my pieces, or will you give them back?
