To me, there are three things we all should do every day. We should do this every day of our lives. Number one is laugh. You should laugh every day. Number two is think. You should spend some time in thought. And number three is, you should have your emotions moved to tears, could be happiness or joy. But think about it. If you laugh, you think, and you cry, that’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.
—  Jimmy V. Just reading this quote makes me tear up a little. Awesome.

Watching ESPN’s 30 for 30 “Survive and Advance” tonight. I love basketball but, to be honest, I’ve never been much of a fan of the college game. Regardless, the story of Jimmy Valvano and his 1983 NC State team is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen. Incredibly moving. I smiled and was brought to tears again and again. It is a great story not just about basketball (the greatest game :) but friendship, family, team, the underdog, belief, having a dream, perseverance, grace in the face of adversity, the preciousness of life. Valvano truly inspires me. He reminds me of my grandfather, also a warm-hearted Italian-American man who coached basketball, also gone too soon. May God rest them and Lorenzo Charles, the man who made perhaps the biggest play of the Wolfpack’s miraculous 1983 season. Their legacies survive them. I am grateful to have seen this doc tonight. It will replay on ESPN2 next friday night. If you get the chance to watch it I do not doubt it will positively affect you as well, especially if you love basketball or any team sport as I do, but even if you do not.

In honour of Jimmy V week here’s a look back at one of the best and most moving ESPY’s speeches of all time.

Don’t give up. Don’t you ever give up!

Jim Valvano

One thing I try to follow is Jim Valvano’s quote:
“To me, there are three things we all should do every day. You do that seven days a week, you’re going to have something special.”
This speech he said has taken a profound effect on my life. I no longer hide my emotions from people, if I was to experience something deeply saddening then I would not shy away from it, but learn from it and become wiser because of it. Experiencing these things over and over again is not being a fool, but just living life. Even though some people might say that it would be foolish. I’m not out trying to get destroyed emotionally every single time but if blight happens to come my way then so be it, I’m just trying to live life to its fullest, and if I can’t cry, laugh or think about something about my life, then I am not living my life. I use to shut everything about myself to people, but telling it, is definitely more satisfying. I might tell everything all at once, but I do need to keep some things to myself as well, since it is mine to tell.

You do that seven days a week, you are going to have something special.

Perspectives, Our Journey to Balance
