BJP leader Jethmalani suspended

Ram Jethmalani is a well-known lawyer

A senior leader of India’s main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been suspended for “gross indiscipline”, a party spokesman says.

Ram Jethmalani, who is also a well-known lawyer, recently demanded the resignation of party chief Nitin Gadkari.

This followed allegations Mr Gadkari had been involved in a corruption scandal.

Mr Gadkari has denied the allegations and says he is ready for a probe.

Mr Jethmalani also criticised his party for opposing the government’s appointment of Ranjit Sinha as the new chief of the Central Bureau of Investigation, India’s federal detective agency.

Mr Jethmalani said that “nobody has the guts to take action against me”.

BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain was quoted as saying by state broadcaster Doordarshan News that Mr Jethmalani’s remarks “are meant to help the [ruling] Congress party” and were an “act of gross indiscipline”.

“Our party president Nitin Gadkari has taken cognisance of Ram Jethmalani’s statements and his challenge that no action can be taken against him and has suspended his membership of the party with immediate effect,” he said.

Me Jethmalani, 86, is a BJP MP in the upper house of parliament from the northern Rajasthan state.

BJP cracks whip, expels Ram Jethmalani from party

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Sunday evening suspended senior party leader Ram Jethmalani from the party and cancelled his membership. This comes in the wake of Jethmalani criticizing his own party for attacking the Congress-led UPA government over the appointment of Ranjit Sinha as the new CBI director.

Earlier, Jethmalani stirred a major controversy when he called for the resignation of BJP president Nitin Gadkari after Arving Kejriwal-led India Against Corruption (IAC) labelled graft charges against him in the operations and shareholdings of his Purti group of companies.

BJP’s spokeman Shahnawaz Hussein in a statement said that Jethmalani’s comments have only helped Congress and the party will not tolerate any indiscipline. He also said that taking into account Jethmalani’s grave indiscipline, party president Nitin Gadkari has decided to expel him from BJP with immediate effect and a letter regarding the decision has been sent to party’s national executive.

With Jethmalani’s expulsion, the BJP has sent a strong warning to other dissenters not to go against the party’s official line.

Earlier on Sunday, a belligerent Jethmalani dared the party leadership to take action against him for his stand on the issue of the appointment of the new CBI director. He said, “If there is any action taken against me, I will welcome it but I don’t think anyone has the guts to take any action against me”.”

Replying to questions, the Rajya Sabha MP said, “I cannot speak for the party. I am a very small person in the party, I can’t predict its action but that does not permit me from speaking the truth … I have expressed my view and I am very happy that at least 3-4 persons have supported me.”

On if there were more people in the party having a similar stand, Jethmalani said, “I am sure there are more. I am 100 per cent sure that there are many more, many more but all don’t have the capacity to speak the truth publicly and openly.”

Actor-turned MP from Patna Sahib, Shatrughan Sinha joined Jethmalani and Yashwant Sinha in demanding resignation of party President Nitin Gadkari facing allegations of corruption, saying the issue raised by them should be looked at seriously.

“The issue raised by them (Jethmalani and Yashwant Sinha) should be looked at seriously,” Sinha had told reporters on Saturday in Patna replying to a question whether he agreed with the other two BJP leaders’ demand for Gadkari’s resignation.

Jethmalani, while demanding Gadkari’s resignation, had also claimed some other BJP leaders were with him on the demand for Gadkari’s exit as party chief.

Apra Mehta as a guest host ties up with the team to raise her voice against child exploitation. Is India a country where children can expect a bright future? What is the price that we put on somebody’s life? What is the cost of happiness? Will we find a real hero today? CRIME PATROL is a reality series. However the case presentation would be a story telling form that would have the interest of a fiction drama presentation. The prelude and finale to the case would make the case a complete story. Interactions with the analysts on the show would be treated with the audience interest point of view keeping it only as much as essential to the story telling. Going beyond the drama of police action in a crime situation, the show also aims to look into the why behind a crime. Police action on one hand gives the show the edge of how the law keepers bring the culprits to book or stop a crime from being committed. On the other hand, the show will also be looking at the sociological aspect behind a crime- both from the victim as well as the criminals side. The cases would be driven by cameras moving along with the police force from the time a crime is reported or when the police receive a call till the point the case is brought to a logical conclusion in the police records for further movement in the court of law. As such the police force is deemed to be the law keeper and not the justice authority.

Jethmalani challenges BJP to take action against him

NEW DELHI: A belligerent BJP MP Ram Jethmalani, who attacked the party for its criticism on the appointment of the new CBI director, today challenged the party leadership to take action against him for his stand on the issue.

“If there is any action taken against me, I will welcome it but I don’t think anyone has the guts to take any action against me,” he told reporters here.

Replying to questions, the Rajya Sabha MP said, “I cannot speak for the party. I am a very small person in the party, I can’t predict its action but that does not permit me from speaking the truth.

“I have expressed my view and I am very happy that at least 3-4 persons have supported me,” he said.

On if there were more people in the party having a similar stand, Jethmalani said, “I am sure there are more. I am 100 per cent sure that there are many more, many more but all don’t have the capacity to speak the truth publicly and openly.”

Actor-turned MP from Patna Sahib, Shatrughan Sinha has joined Jethmalani and Yashwant Sinha in demanding resignation of party President Nitin Gadkari facing allegations of corruption, saying the issue raised by them should be looked at seriously.

“The issue raised by them (Jethmalani and Yashwant Sinha) should be looked at seriously,” Sinha had told reporters yesterday in Patna replying to a question whether he agreed with the other two BJP leaders’ demand for Gadkari’s resignation.

Jethmalani, while demanding Gadkari’s resignation, had claimed some other BJP leaders were with him on the demand for Gadkari’s exit as party chief.

The advocate-politician, who has embarrassed BJP earlier by openly demanding Gadkari’s resignation, again put the party in discomfiture when he attacked Leaders of Opposition in Parliament Sushma Sinha and Arun Jaitley for criticising the appointment of new CBI Director Ranjit Sinha and said the government’s decision has “averted national calamity”.

“….I was astonished to read that the BJP has attacked the Prime Minister and the Congress party for what the party calls the fast-tracked appointment of Mr. Ranjit Sinha as the Director of the CBI,” he said in a letter addressed to Gadkari, copies of which were marked to the Prime Minister and the media.

“I regret that this criticism is a result of complete ignorance of relevant facts and has been instigated by a most undesirable rival who had to withdraw his petition before the CAT yesterday as a result of the appointment,” he said.

Taken aback by Jethmalani’s outburst against the party, BJP had indicated yesterday it may take disciplinary action against him.

“Jethmalani has been making statements against the BJP President and has now spoken against the two Leaders of the Opposition. We completely deny his charges against them. The party has taken serious note of his statements and strong action will be taken at the appropriate time,” BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain had said.
