Sewing Class: Lesson 1

WHATIWORE Sewing Class:
LESSON 1 SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • Pencil and Paper
  • Calculator
  • Measuring Tape

This pattern consists of a waistband and skirt (3 pieces - 1 front and 2 back) plus optional pockets.

External image

WAISTBAND–

To determine the size of your waistband, measure your waist at a comfortable position. This skirt is intended to sit at your natural waist (this is the smallest part of your torso). Plug in your measurement to the worksheet after “WIDTH”.

SKIRT–

From the same point you measured your waist, hold the tap measure vertically and note the length you’d like for your skirt. I think knee length is the most attractive for this pattern. Plug this number in for skirt “LENGTH”.

THE-POCKETS

If you’d like pockets you will need to make your own quick pattern piece. Using a piece of paper (8.5 x 11 will be big enough), place a hand on the paper in a comfortable, relaxed position. Trace around the hand with a 1" cushion.  Now add 5/8" around that cushion line. You now have your pocket pattern.

HOMEWORK before our next class...

  • Re-read your sewing machine manual. I will not be able to answer questions on how to operate your machine (they’re all different!!). You should be able to wind your bobbin thread, thread your machine and experiment with different stitches on scrap fabric.
  • Get acquainted with your sewing terms.  I’m going to be breaking it down as much as I can, but you should be comfortable with basic sewing terms.  If you haven’t checked out the Reader’s Digest Guide yet, please do so before we continue.
WeTheUrban Interview: What I Wore (Fall 2010)

WeTheUrban had the honor to once again chit-chat with the legendary Jessica Schroeder of What I Wore. For those of you who don’t know, Jessica started What I Wore in 2008, blogging her outfit everyday and giving a small and fun to read blurb about the clothing and what’s been going on in her life. Her tumblog has since gained a huge (almost cult-like) following and has become so successful that it’s now her full time job! In the midst of her writting a book and partnering with many companies for give-aways, we got a 5 question interview with her talking about Fall 2010 fashion. What’s in? What’s not? Check out the interview after the jump:

Memorial Day + Meeting the Parents

External image

WhatIWore: This time tomorrow I will be en route to Indiana to enjoy Memorial Day weekend and meet my boyfriend’s family for the first time. Two very exciting things! I’ve started to lay out my outfits for the weekend. I think I dress pretty parent appropriate (wouldn’t you say Mom and Dad?) so I’m just focusing on fun, bright colors and layers.

I’m wondering if you guys have any input? What did you wear to meet your boyfriend’s parents for the first time?

My Wildest Fashion Dreams:

WhatIWore: I’ve always loved fashion, I like to dream big, so I thought why not just put it out there?? Here’s some of my wildest fashion dreams:

1. Walk a runway during fashion week I dunno, I always wanted to be a model, hence maybe why I take tons of pictures of myself!! My only mini request: those 4" heels have ankle straps (I can’t be pulling a Carrie Bradshaw in my fantasy!!)

2. Hang with the big kids Joe Zee seems like a nice and cool guy, maybe we could collaborate? Anna Wintour wants to have lunch? Sure! I can be there!! (I have a couple of ideas for her anyway)

3. Style an Editorial We’re still in dreamland, right? I’d love to have creative reign on an editorial, and I’d totally push an old time, Hitchcock-esque, Betty Draper, traveling on a train with matching luggage type thing. Featuring my favorite REAL LIFE bloggers as models. I will make this happen in real life.

4. Launch my own fashion line with funding. And a production team to oversee it all coming together. And show at fashion week. And then be on the front page of WWD.

Why are your fashion fantasies?

What:

Scarf: e-bay
T-neck: Zara
Skirt: Target
Belt: Poor Little Rich Girl (Boston)
Tights?
Booties: Payless

Where:

Work, Daydreaming, etc.

Why:

Its really chilly today (I think sub freezing when I walked to work this am), but I have the spring bug and had to wear something fun. I found this skirt yesterday by chance while on a mission for toothpaste at Target. And it was only $15!! You can’t make a skirt like this for $15!! The tights and t-neck are for warmth and the bright pink scarf perks it all back up. I love this outfit!!

WhatIWore:

February 16, 2009

What:

Hat: Self Made
Cropped Pea Coat: Target
Scarf: vintage
Dress: Old Navy
Tights: We Love Color
Boots: Banana

Where:

Meeting at the Coffee Shop

Why:

Beautiful bright skies and a longing for some bright colors helped me put this one together. I haven’t worn my peacoat in a while, mainly because its not really warm enough. The sun fooled me into thinking it was enough. But it sort of was for a neighborhood walk. I feel like a mod schoolgirl today. Just wild and way out there. Whatever! As my mom would say “You go be Jessica Schroeder!!"

WhatIWore:

When:
April 28, 2009

What:
Dress: quick hemmed, vintage, etsy
Scarf (as Belt): belonged to my mom
Shoes: Simply Vera by Vera Wang

Where:
Work!

Why:
I’ve been wanting to hem and wear this dress for a while, so this morning I just got scissor happy and chopped 5" off!! No fancy hem (well, no hem at all), just the raw edge. Oh well. Looks more youthful that way, don’t ya think? I love wearing this scarf that belonged to my mom. Anything of my mom’s from when she was my age is pretty much the coolest thing ever. You all know I love vintage, but my mom’s vintage?!? That’s just so neat to me.

WhatIWore:

J.Crew Cashmere Sweater: thrifted
Neck scarf: vintage, thrifted
Bracelets: Target, Beacon’s Closet
Jeans: Arden B, free from work
Boots: Gift

Where:

Work, Dentist (Ahhhh!) and Tea

Why:

Just trying to keep my spirits high with bright colors!! Its sort of that “new outfit” feel because most of these pieces are relatively new to my closet.  I just love that feeling. I need to do my taxes pronto so I can go on a big shopping spree with my return check. Stimulate the economy and stimulate my closet. ;)

What I Wore: Handmade in Peru

WhatIWore:

When:

February 2, 2009

What:

Sweater: Alpaca Peruvian Sweater, gift from J
Blouse: Penguin
Belt: Lucky Brand (free)
Skirt: free from work
Tights: We Love Colors
Boots: Banana

Where:

Office

Why:

On Friday, one of my very best friends stopped by NYC after a 2 week trip to Peru.  He was super thoughtful and brought me back this beautiful alpaca sweater. This is the second time I’ve worn it since then! I love it. The rich earthtones are keeping me happy and warm. I’m wearing it with a plaid skirt (totally clashing! mwahahah!) in the same color story. I wanted the sweater to be the highlight so I went monotone on the tights and boots. I also have a shot of my coat and scarf in there. Its a vintage piece that had a fur collar (I took that off).

Wearing a new outfit always makes me happy. Even happier that I will always think of my friend each time I wear the sweater. Happy Monday.

What I Wore: Retro Twist

WhatIWore:

When:
April 21, 2009

What:
Blouse: Target
Necklace: Elma Blint
Skirt: Target
Tights: Target
Shoes: Payless

Where:
Work and Shopping

Why:
It really all started with the basics– frilly girly underthings (TMI?!). Then I thought- hey hey- how about some fishnets… then to the black skirt and heels and finally on the red polka dot blouse. Some red lipstick pulls it all together for me. Its rainy in NYC so no need for rollars in my hair today, a side pony will do just fine. I love that this look is all super inexpensive!! Style is accessible to everyone no matter how remote you are or your budget!!

What I Wore: Easter Sunday

WhatIWore:

When:

April 12, 2009 Easter Sunday

What:

Vintage 1950s Dress: The Estate Sale
Silk Flower Corsage: H&M
Nude Fishnet Hosiery: Kohl’s
Gold/Silver Metallic Shoes: White Dove Vintage, Brooklyn Flea
Ring: Topshop

Where:

Church with my parents

Why:

Well, this is a little silly, but when I saw this dress listed at The Estate Sale on etsy, I knew I should have it and wear it for Easter. So I bought it and then bought a ticket home for Easter weekend. And that’s today! So it all worked out nicely.

What I Wore: Birds of a Feather

WhatIWore:

When:

March 25, 2009

What:

Feather clip: self made
Blouse: White Dove NYC vintage
Belt: vintage, thrifted
Skirt: vintage, thrifted
Tights: We Love Colors
Booties: vintage, thrifted

Where:

Work

Why:

I really don’t have a big reason other than getting these fabulous tights in the mail the other day from my favorite tights resource- We Love Colors. I tried on loads of different combinations and this one just stuck. And the feather clip was a last minute project I threw together in about 10 minutes this morning and I think it pulls everything together quite nicely. I feel pretty.

WhatIWore:

When:
May 21, 2009

What:
Dress: Plenty by Tracy Reese
Slip: vintage, thrifted
Shoes: Naturalizers
Flower: vintage, Beacon’s Closet
Necklace: Elma Blint

Where:
Breakfast Date, Office, Park Lunch, Home and packing for Indiana!

Why:
Yesterday I couldn’t get the zipper on this dress to work but today something just clicked! I love the romantic feel of this dress. To make it a smidge more glamourous, I paired it with a vintage slip. For warmth on my walk I added a cream vintage cardigan. Lots of love with the vintage sillk flower in my hair.  Can you tell how happy I am right now? I’m just beaming. Life is so good and I am so blessed. I’m also pretty stoked at how these photos came out. Thanks photographer boyfriend!

DIY: Refashioned Paisley Blouse

External image

WhatIWore:
On my last trip home, I was on a mission to take something found (thrifted) and turn it into something new and modern.  This beautiful paisley top is the result!  I used an 80s dress as my fabric.

External image

The original dress on the left with pattern and notions on the right.

External image

I used a super easy pattern (Simplicity 2962). I like using the really easy patterns, especially when I want the instant gratification of doing a project in one afternoon.

External image

The collar pieces come from the sleeves!

External image

I kept the original hem and used the skirt for the main bodice pieces.
