Trump, The NFL And The Powder Keg History Of Race, Sports And Politics
President Trump says his calling for the firing of NFL players who don't stand for the national anthem isn't about race. But the protests are about racial justice, which has a long history in sports.

Sunday was a historic day for the intersection of sports and politics.

Widespread protests in the National Football League, the most popular professional sport in America, were shown on broadcast channels across the country.

Stick to sports? Not this week. Whether sports fans wanted to see it or not, they couldn’t avoid politics.

Athletes — mostly black — from every team in the country knelt, stood arm in arm, sat or refused to take the field for the national anthem. They even took it abroad with the first protest taking place in England, in a game that represents the NFL’s effort to broaden the league’s appeal.

Jesse Owens and his German rival Luz Long at the Berlin Summer Olympics in 1936.  It was Long who advised Owens to change his technique to qualify for the High Jump which he eventually won, with Long coming second.  The two struck up a friendship that defied the Nazi’s policy of racial superiority.

“It took a lot of courage for him to befriend me in front of Hitler… You can melt down all the medals and cups I have and they wouldn’t be a plating on the twenty-four karat friendship that I felt for Luz Long at that moment” - said Owens.

Long, a lawyer, was killed in action in Italy at the age of 30 in 1943.  I’m posting this because I just found out they are filming Owens’ story in Montreal.

Greatest Olympic Moments: Jesse Owens, Berlin, August 1936.

In August of 1936, American athlete Jesse Owens won four gold medals, setting three world records and tying a fourth in the 100 yard dash - all in front of Adolf Hitler, who had planned to use the Games as a tool to promote the physical superiority of the Aryan race.

Hollywoods new “”“progressive”“ rhetoric is so… worthless because all these actors are quick to openly condemn people like Harvey Weinstein but then go and work with and even defend woody Allen because they’d rather star in one of his ”“”“"prestigious”“”“” movies and be perceived as serious actors than not work with a pedophile.
