Harlem Shake, NYC

We were traveling on the 4th of July, so decided to celebrate with burgers and dogs, and fried chicken sandwiches, on the 5th! We’d been hearing good things about Harlem Shake so decided to head up to 125th St. to check them out!

Harlem Shake is an old diner, complete with lunch counter, that’s been converted into a modern burger shop, but strives to keep the classic vibe of the original eatery…

While their burgers are clearly influenced by Shake Shack, Harlem Shake’s extensive menu also draws inspiration from Southern and Caribbean cooking.

To keep in the spirit of the holiday, we stuck mainly to American classics though. Here’s a look…

The Harlem Classic with Cheese…

Two thin beef patties, cooked till crispy, with cheese, onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce and special sauce…

One damn tasty burger, but lacked a little bit of the meatiness of a Shackburger…

The Classic Fried Chicken Sandwich…

The best thing we ate that afternoon, buttermilk brined chicken, perfectly spiced and fried, on a potato roll topped with a wonderful homemade slaw…

This we’ll definitely go back for!

Their Chili-Cheese Dog…

The dog itself was cooked beautifully, in a great casing with fantastic snap, but the chili lacked spice and the cheddar sauce was bland as well, unfortunately…

The Jerk Fries with jerk mayo packed plenty of punch though…

But this is where the magic was, their picked cherry pepper and bacon relish. Delicious! Added flavor and heat to everything!! They need to bottle and sell this stuff…

Our holiday celebration may have been a day late, but thanks to Harlem Shake, we had fireworks of flavor on the 5th of July!
