jenna hawkins

I got down the roles of the girls. Though, I messed quite a bit while drawing this. Shizuka as Jenna the most difficult and I’m still not too pleased with her design. Ah well, these are just mini references. Next is the SQUIP and I have already figured who will fill his role.

My Endless List of Favorite Books

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Now, Sophia, would you care to tell me why you’re here by the pond instead of reporting to your next class?“
"I’m experiencing some teenage angst, Mrs. Casnoff,” I answered. “I need to, like, write in my journal or something.”

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Casting Suggestions

Marvel’s Cinematic Universe is ever expanding, and long the way, has picked up an array of brilliant actors.   Part of the success, is that Marvel aren’t afraid to go after big older names such as Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Michael Douglas and Michael Keaton to compliment their newer and young leads (like latest addition Tom Holland, and let’s not forget that Chris Hemsworth was pretty much an unknown when he was cast in THOR!)

Whilst there are examples of miscasts and a few recasts, on the whole, Marvel have proven themselves… and some of their casting choices are inspired.

Everyone have their favourite actors, and of course you’d be excited if those actors were announced as part of the MCU.  I’ll openly admit I had geekgasms when Karl Urban and Jeff Goldblum were announced for THOR: RAGNAROK!

By the end of ‘Phase 2’, the franchise had already amassed over 80 actors, and that figure only counts those listed on the poster/dvd credits!  We’re now three-deep into the third phase with seven films yet to come, and films already starting to come in for Phase 4, there’s no sign of the MCU letting up - lots of characters to come, and that means a lot more actors to be announced.

Below are 10 suggestions of my own, for who I would love to see take part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!  So, in no particular order…

1. Hugh Laurie

I’ll be straight up, Laurie is in the list for one reason - I want him to play J Jonah Jameson!    JK Simmons perfectly played the character in Sam Raimi’s SPIDER-MAN films, but he was absent from Marc Webb’s efforts and looks unlikely to be included in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.  That makes sense, as the MCU Peter Parker is still at school, so no immediate need for him to earn money from The Daily Bugle.  But the Bugle would be a great addition to the Marvel world, as they could report on all sorts, not just Spider-adventures.  And Jameson is a popular character that would be welcomed by fans.  Simmons is done, so forget about him, and for me - just watch HOUSE MD, Laurie would makes a great JJJ!  I’ve been championing him for a while now, and I won’t stop until the role is cast!

2.  Aidan Turner

I’ve not bother watching Turner’s shirtless endeavours in POLDARK, because I’ve been a fan since he played Mitchell the troubled vampire in BEING HUMAN.  After that he went on to be Kili the dwarf, easily one of the highlights in THE HOBBIT trilogy by Peter Jackson.  I don’t have a particular role in mind for him, but Marvel need to get him signed before he signs on somewhere else.  His name keeps coming up as a possibility for the next James Bond!

3. Helen Mirren

Mirren would be a fun, welcome addition to any Marvel film that would cast her, but I have a perfect casting choice for her!  Janet Van Dyne in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP.  I’m pretty sure, Dyne will be involved in someway in the sequel due out next year.  Now, it’s possible she might only be involved in flashbacks, so possibly only a young actress is needed… however(!), if they intend on rescuing her, and bring her back to our reality plane of existence, then they’ll want someone around the same age as Michael Douglas.  Mirren is a year younger -perfect!  If need be, They can de-age Mirren for young-Janet, with the same CG tech they’re becoming fans of, having done so with Michael Douglas, Robert Downey Jr and Kurt Russell.    This needs to happen!

4. Sam Claflin

I like Sam.  He’s good.  Apparently he was in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES as well as SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, but I didn’t pay attention to him until THE HUNGER GAMES.  He stood out to me, and his role in LOVE, ROSIE, cemented him as one to watch.  I’m not randomly putting him up tough, but my suggestion is unlikely at present.  IF (big 'if’) Marvel regain the rights to FANTASTIC FOUR, then Claflin is my choice for Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch.  I think he’s perfect.  Of course, as we know, FF is staying with 20th Century Fox for now… but if it does cross over, please, Sam’s your man!

5. Morgan Freeman

It’s Morgan Freeman - what other reason do you want?  His name was tossed about for the role of The Ancient One in DOCTOR STRANGE, a role that would go to Tilda Swinton.  And of course, he did play Lucius Fox in THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy, so maybe he’s had his fill of superflicks… but honestly, if you have the option of Morgan Freeman… you cast Morgan Freeman!

6. Alison Brie

I love Alison Brie.  It’s possible I’m including her in this list for the wrong reasons, but I do think she’d be great.  She was one of the names put around for the role of Sharon Carter / Agent 13, a part that would go to the underused Emily VanCamp.  This means she’s free for a bigger role!  Of course, the Russo Brothers do tend to include COMMUNITY stars in cameo roles.  Danni Pudi in THE WINTER SOLDER, and Jim Rash in CIVIL WAR, with their intention to include someone in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.   Now, if this ends up being Brie, I’ll take what I can get.  But I’d hope she’d get a more sizable role, like Donald Glover has in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING.

7. John Goodman.

Goodman is a safe pair of hands.  I really hoped he’d be the voice of Baloo in the recent JUNGLE BOOK movies, but Bill Murray did a good job.  I just feel, Goodman would fit somewhere nicely into the franchise, and could easily be either an ally or villain.

8. Kevin Spacey.

Spacey is awesome.  I won’t hear an argument otherwise.  I will just point to two films (AMERICAN BEAUTY and THE USUAL SPECTS) and one series (HOUSE OF CARDS) and I believe that’s enough of any argument to cast him.  SUPERMAN RETURNS wasn’t the best film, but Spacey’s casting as Lex Luthor was perfect, just let down by the script.  I’ll take him over the current Eisenberg miscast.  But cast him as who?  Well, how about as Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin?  Or another villain for Spidey - Doc Ock!  Actually, I’d go for a character untested in any of the live action films - Mysterio!  Now, come on, that’s great casting.  I need to see that happen!  There’s another Spiderflick in 2019… write Mysterio, and cast Spacey!

9. Jeffrey Dean Morgan

I have this thing where I’m trying to get all the cast from the undervalued film THE LOSERS involved in the MCU.  We already have Chris Evans, Zoe Saldana and Idris Elba.  Surely JDM is next on the agenda?!  Now his contract to THE WALKING DEAD as the baseball-bat wielding Negan, might get in the way.  Mind you, that hasn’t stopped Danai Gurira, who will be see in both BLACK PANTHER and INFINITY WAR.

10.  Liam Neeson

He was a mentor to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Qui-Gon JInn in STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE).  He was a mentor to Batman (R'as al Ghul in BATMAN BEGINS) and he was a god-like Lion (Aslan in THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA).  They’re the only reasons you need to include Neeson in the MCU! Cast him in CAPTAIN MARVEL.  Do it now.

Casting Bonus

Technically, both Jenna Coleman and Corey Hawkins have appeared in the MCU already, which is why they’re not higher in the list.   Hawkins was -apparently - a Navy Seal in IRON MAN 3, whilst Coleman played Bucky Barnes’ date at a Stark Expo.    Since then Coleman got her sci-fi on as Clara in DOCTOR WHO, and became royalty in VICTORIA.  Hawkins has appeared in THE WALKING DEAD, lead 24: LEGACY and got in further with the  Marvel cast in KONG: SKULL ISLAND (it featured Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L Jackson and Brie Larson).  Whilst slightly breaking canon, I believe audiences will forgive Marvel, if Coleman and Hawkins get given newer, bigger roles.

Now, that’s my list.  How do you feel about any of my suggestions?  Whilst your having a think, head over to twitter, add procrastinalien , and take part in our Batlle of Superheroes polls!
