So Swampy retweeted A Walk on Water stuff again, which of course he’d do since he’s with the organisation.
I’ve criticised the organisation for being ableist and run by abled and neurotypical people, I know I’ve blown that horn a lot. What I’m here for now is to share what is in this Instagram post.
It’s pretty bullshit, yeah. It has a blatant tone of focusing on people like parents who supposedly “suffer” because of their Autistic kids, unless touched by Autism is some weird new way of separating Autism from Autistic people (which you should NOT do, we are who we are because we’re Autistic). Basically, it could say “poor person, being around that brat with Autism must be sooooo hard, I’m here for you and I promise we can save you from this menace” and I’d be feeling the same as I am now.
On another note… as frustrating and ableist as this post is, I can’t help but also find it weirdly funny too. It just has such a self-serving tone to it, with the whole “be nice and you’re like a superhero!” tone I’ve seen many places elsewhere, and “touched by Autism” especially is a phrase that is so bad that Autistic people have made fun of it before. Way to look like a parody of your organisation, huh?
So yeah, shitty coded language that is meant to other Autistic people and paint the people who live with Autistic people as victims who need reassurance, but done in a way that is somehow both insulting and goes into Poe’s Law territory.
