Jay Kawatski: Off The Grid
This winter I went on a mission far north in Canada for a job- so far north that we were bordering the Alaskan border. On jobs I make a point to shoot the shit with local people and understand a bit about the land of where I am. As its a part of traveling, that I value so much.
One morning when everyone went back after breakfast to jump on their facebook, and update their instagram, I decided to hold back. I wandered off to the wood shed and met Jay, he was in charge of all maintenance of the heli operation we were at- Last Frontier Heli. He began to tell me his story, as he fled to Canada from Wisconsin when he was 20, in search of living in the wild. He eventually met a girl, married and moved 11 miles into the wilderness out of town. He then built a place to live, started and raised a family while living off the land. He then brought his family into town when his girls were about 13, I believe he said. It was so interesting to me to meet someone who actually raised a family off the grid, away from civilization. Surviving solely on his wits and knowledge of the land.
Pretty Incredible story, this world is full of such interesting people. And yes- he split all this wood.
