This Day in True Crime

8 January: the 2011 Tucson shooting

On 8 January 2011, Jared Lee Loughner (pictured above left) made an attempt on the life of U.S. Representative Gabbie Giffords (picture above right) in a shooting in a Safeway parking lot in Tucson, Arizona at around 10:10am local time. The shooting left six people, including a nine-year-old girl, a federal District Court judge, and one of Giffords’ staffers, fatally wounded. Giffords was severely injured, but she survived a gunshot wound to the head. Since then, she recovered well and has been an outstanding advocate for gun control.

Jared Lee Loughner (Tucson shooter), Anders Behring Breivik (Norway shooter) and James Holmes (Aurora shooter) all have Moon in Virgo:

“You lead a quiet, unpretentious life. You are strong in intellect, and have a very good memory. You should pursue a career of a cerebral nature. You could be quite successful in such a vocation. Occupations dealing with health and healing are also ideally suited for you.”

“He has a very good memory. Scientific or medical studies preferred above all others. He is humble and moderate, calm and reserved. Emotional discipline. He is willing to help, devoted and gentle.

Weaknesses: servile nature, frequent changes of occupation, gets annoyed, upset, worries. He is too shy.”

So far he has done James Holmes, Dylann Roof, and Ricky Kasso.  Which images below would you like to see him draw?

If they can arrest white people after they’ve committed mass murder, they should also be able to arrest an individual who pointed a gun into the air.

There is no excuse.

Bryce Williams was an evil, demented murderer. Adam Lanza was an evil, demented murderer. James Holmes was an evil, demented murderer. Dylann Roof was an evil, demented murderer. Jared Lee Loughner was an evil, demented murderer. That the right wing press ONLY want to talk in-depth about Williams and link him with every political group going and dismiss every other spree shooter as simply a “lone wolf” killer is...eh, rather perplexing. It’s almost like there are different standards or something. Odd.
About Jared Lee Loughner

– Complained about people not speaking English properly.

Cited “Mein Kampf” (beloved by Neo-Nazis, who are right-wingers like their Nazi forefathers) as his favorite book.

– Was concerned about the deficit and wanted it paid by a gold- or silver-backed American currency. In other words, he supported the “Gold Standard,” a longtime staple of right-wing ideology.

Tell me how this kid wasn’t a right-wing nutjob? I could use the laugh.

Anderson Cooper interviews Bill Maher about Giffords shooting

Anderson Cooper:
Bill, when you first heard the news that a member of Congress had been shot, in a politically-heated state like Arizona, what was your initial reaction?

Bill Maher:
That this is really the only country in the world that shoots its leaders at the rate that we do. The last time I think a leader was shot in Britain was in 1812. Canada has had 15 or 16 prime ministers. How many have been shot? Zero. [America] is a very well-armed country with a lot of nutty people, and that’s a very bad combination.

I could be completely wrong here, but I think there is a much harder-core element in American society that doesn’t listen to these pundits, doesn’t care who is president, and has nothing but contempt and hatred for government in general.
—  Henry Rollins • Offering his little piece of insight on the Jared Lee Loughner thang to Vanity Fair readers. Rollins’ argument? He just thinks the pundits on the right are too simple-minded to truly inspire this kind of rage. Sample: “I saw Glenn Beck in action last summer at his Restore Honor Rally. His speech sucked and his audience looked ancient and out-of-shape.” Oh wait, there’s more: “Rush Limbaugh makes money getting simpleminded people to feel good about their intellectually undernourished brain spasms. He’s very good at it, and I scarcely believe a fraction of what he says.” And finally: “Sarah Palin embarrasses herself almost immediately upon opening her mouth to speak or upon moving her fingers to send messages to her dull flock.” Instead, he feels that a guy like Timothy McVeigh didn’t really care who was president when he did what he did. In other news, Henry Rollins is now upmarket enough to write for Vanity Fair. source (viafollow)
NY TIMES: "Among those killed in the Tucson shooting were John M. Roll, 63, the chief judge for the United States District Court for Arizona, and Gabriel Zimmerman, 30, who was the director of community outreach for Ms. Giffords. The others who died were identified as Christina Green, 9; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; and Phyllis Schneck, 79."

Investigators have determined that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who remains in critical condition following surgery, was the target of the assassin, 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner; a second suspect, described as a white male in his 40s or 50s, is still being sought.

Loughner's lawyers: Doctors are forcing medication on him

If Jared Lee Loughner takes psychotropic drugs, he could become competent enough to stand trial. A while back, a judge ruled that Loughner can take any medicine he wants voluntarily, but his lawyers must be notified if he’s forced to take any medication to restore him to competency. However, those lawyers say that they weren’t in the room during a June 13th hearing which allowed a mental hospital to force him to take drugs to improve his mental condition — against the wishes of Loughner. Now they’re having a judge decide on the matter for a third time. So, the question is: If his lawyers are trying to prevent him from taking the medicine he needs to get better, how is he supposed to stand trial? Answer: If the decision favors Loughner, he probably won’t. source
