may 18, 2017 - little victories

i recently decided to start learning japanese, and it’s been a fun and enjoyable experience! i still have some hiragana left to learn before i dive into katakana and kanji, but i’m happy and proud of the progress that i’ve made so far.

currently listening to: “pick me up” - perfume

My friend and I have come to the conclusion that Viktor and Yuri, the dorks they are, are both determined to surprise the other on their wedding day. And they both decide that the best way to do this is to give their vows in the other’s native language.

They both stay up late studying without the other knowing. Yuri frantically asks Yurio to check his grammar (Yurio is of course DISGUSTED by how sappy he is but helps anyway), Viktor calls Mari at 3 am because he can’t figure out how the fuck this word works and he’s so worried it won’t be right… she looks at what he has and just laughs thinking of the time Yuri tried to write Viktor a fan letter in garbled Russian, taking pity on him.

Wedding day comes, Yuri comes down the isle, both are almost crying already. Viktor takes a shuddering breath and starts his vows. His accent is terrible, he stumbles on pronunciation, but Yuri? He is sobbing already. Viktor finishes, grinning widely. Yuri is crying and laughing, slowly takes a breath. Smirks up at Viktor, starts his own vows… and Viktor is in instant tears.

It takes all their willpower not to kiss before they’re told to.

The bad ass historical women we need to remember this month.

It’s officially Women’s History Month, which means it’s time to celebrate the many accomplishments that are so often looked over throughout the rest of the year.

Nellie Bly - Nellie Bly entered the journalism scene in an unabashedly feminist way, by submitting a letter to The Pittsburgh Dispatch that rebutted one writer’s diatribe about how women belonged in the home. An editor saw Bly’s potential and hired her in 1885. Just two years later, Bly famously posed as a mental patient on Blackwell’s Island for a New York World expose; a few years after, she that took a record-setting, 72-day trip around the world, writing about it for the same paper.

Agent 355 - Long before 007, there was 355. History books would do well to liven their account of the American Revolution by mentioning this member of the Culper Spy Ring, America’s first elite spy network. One of George Washington’s most valuable spies, the woman known only as “Agent 355” was likely the only one who could rock an evening gown while gathering information critical to the colonies’ achieving independence.

Murasaki Shikibu - Little is known about the Japanese author credited with writing the world’s first modern novel, The Tale of Genji, other than that she certainly overcame plenty of obstacles to do so. Even her name is an invention, drawn from one of the novel’s characters and the author’s father’s job, according to Encyclopaedia Brittanica. Not only was Shikibu educated — a rarity for women at any point for most of history, but especially around the year 1010 — but she also became literate in both Japanese and Chinese.

Maria W. Stewart - Though her name is (unfortunately) not one often included in history books, Stewart can claim plenty of impressive firsts. She was the first American woman to speak to an audience of mixed genders and races, as well as one of the first African American woman to deliver any public speech at all.

Pauli Murray - Pauli Murray wore many hats, and each one was equally impressive. Murray became a civil rights lawyer in the late 1940s, a particularly impressive feat given that women in general, let alone black women, had been prohibited from becoming lawyers only decades before.

Read more about these women and 5 others we must never forget.

Twenty-six letters

“Twenty-six letters in the English alphabet,” whispers Victor, gently stroking Yuuri’s cheek as he sits next to him on a folding chair on the Hasetsu beach, the stars twinkling in the sky, the waves gently crashing onto the sand with the sound of serenity and privacy.

“Twenty-six letters,” Victor repeats, and Yuuri stares at him, wide-eyed and beautiful, hair soft as Victor runs his fingers through it. The breeze whips by, and Yuuri laughs. Victor’s fingers briefly tangle in Yuuri’s locks, and Yuuri reaches up his own hand to help Victor out.

Victor’s heart pounds, loudly, accompanying the rhythm of the waves, creating a wild dance between his emotions and the world surrounding him.

He can’t pay attention to the waves, when he’s in front of Yuuri. He can’t be bothered to shift on the chair, where he’s slightly twisted as Yuuri holds tightly the hand that is furthest from him. He can barely breathe. They’re engaged, and they’ve known each other for nearly two years now, yet Yuuri never fails to set his heart aflame.

“More than twenty thousand,” says Yuuri, and Victor responds with a confused expression.

“More than two thousand commonly used kanji,” clarifies Yuuri with a small smile. Victor loves that smile, when his eyes crinkle and his face softens sweetly.

“That’s right,” answers Victor. “And thirty-three letters in the Russian alphabet,” he adds.

“Yes,” says Yuuri, and he’s smiling fully now, but still looks confused.

“There are twenty-six letters in the English alphabet, thirty-three in the Russian alphabet, and more than two thousand commonly used kanji,” says Victor, holding Yuuri’s hand tighter. “With those, I can string together any words I want. I can feel your eros in the letter E, taste the katsudon in the letter K, hear your name in the letter Y.”

“Victor–”

“But Yuuri,” continues Victor, as he feels his eyes begin to water. “But Yuuri, despite all of this, despite these twenty-six letters, these thirty-three characters, these two thousand kanji–I could never, never, have enough letters to describe…”

“Oh Vitya…” whispers Yuuri.

“My love for you.”

oceans-of-syncronized-chaos  asked:

In the Percy Jackson series by Rick riordan there are demigod children with one parent mortal and the other part of the Greek/Roman Phaethon. I have a character Japanese character from Japan I'm questioning if I want to make her mother a Japanese goddess much like the demigods in the Percy Jackson series. Would this be okay?

Japanese followers (and Japanese only), what say you?

Victuuri Week: Day 2

(Yuuri: Long distance)

Victor and Yuuri talk over skype every night while away for their nationals. I know the last frame is super corny but I thought it’d be cute if they said “I love you” in each other’s languages.

Translations:

大好きだよ (daisuki da yo) - I love you

я люблю тебя (ya lyublyu tebya) - I love you

Sorry if I’ve completely butchered the Russian/ Japanese writing, neither of those are my languages.

(Let me know if I’ve messed up either of the languages)

some quick ideas based off @pepplemint ‘s soulmate name tattoos au where Allura has a soulmate tattoo that says “Takashi”:

1. The tattoo is written in Altean symbols, and Shiro catches sight of it one day when they’re training. They’ve all learned a bit of Altean by that point and Shiro thinks he can sorta read it, but it looks like it says ‘takashi’ but he’s not sure? So he thinks it must be an Altean word with similar pronunciation and he casually asks Allura what the word is and what it means. He’s thinking this is gonna be fun and hilarious, she’ll tell him what the word means and he’ll tell her how much it sounds like his name, it’ll be cute maybe he’ll tease her a lil bit about having his name tattooed on her arm…

But when he asks Allura gets all sad and shy and eventually tells him: “It says Takashi. It’s the name of my soulmate. All Alteans have their soulmate’s true name tattooed on their skin, but of course my soulmate must have died with Altea… Shiro are you alright?” becauSE SHIRO.EXE HAS STOPPED WORKING does he tell her? should he say something? does she even want him as her soulmate?

Bonus: Shiro tries to think of a way to tell her that doesn’t come across as creepy or forward and he can’t think of anything and after about three days of agonising he just blurts out in front of the whole team “My name is Takashi Shirogane!” and everyone’s like ‘dude…… what?’ and now ALLURA.EXE HAS STOPPED WORKING because SHE SECRETLY SORTA HOPED

2. The tattoo is written in kanji, and Allura obviously can’t read it, so she just assumes her soulmate is an alien of some kind. When she meets the Paladins and Shiro, she ~secretly hopes~ he’s the one but nope, they all speak English and Pidge’s laptop is in English (she checked) and she’s never seen any other language from Earth so OH WELL GUESS THAT’S THAT

Then one night she’s sitting up late with Shiro and they get to talking about different Earth languages, and it’s news to Allura that Earth still has SO MANY languages, and Shiro starts talking to her about Japanese. And about learning English and Japanese as a child, and how Japanese sounds and how it’s written. He starts telling her about Japanese writing systems and how it’s written downwards and she’s so cute and fascinated that he just picks up a scrap of paper and goes “here, i’ll show you” and writes his name in kanji. And he shows her and says “that’s my full name, Takashi Shirogane”.

And Allura’s looking at it like… this looks HAUNTINGLY FAMILIAR. So she takes the scrap of paper and asks really shyly: “can i keep this?”. Shiro just thinks it’s adorable of course and says ‘yeah keep it’ and that night Allura goes back to her room and lifts up her sleeve and with shaking fingers holds the scrap of paper up to her tattoo and IT’S THE SAME.
